Wrapping paper lives in a drawer in the spare room, along with a variety of nice presents either pre bought for birthdays or picked up with no particular person in mind, and the cards.

Batteries (watch, calculator, scales, triple a, double a and smoke alarm...not excessive at all...) live in a chest of drawers downstairs that also has one for stationery, one for crap like unfiled letters, and one with napkins and the like in. The battery drawer is quite copious and also contains all adapters, leads and wires as well as lightbulbs, padlocks, candles, battery chargers etc.

We don’t have an understairs cupboard or I would store all this stuff in there.

I am very proud of my wrapping paper storage! I saved a box that flowers were delivered in and I use it to hold rolled up sheets of wrapping paper and brown paper . Stops it getting crumpled and I can see what I have ! It's about the only useful storage invention I have.

wrapping paper and cards in a cupboard in the living room, or for wrapping paper, sometimes down the side of a bedroom wardrobe.

handbags all inside one big-ish handbag on top of my wardrobe. You could also put hooks on the inside of your wardrobe door and hang them or get one of those wardrobe tidy things that you hang from the rail in there.

post on a stand next to the front door.

plastic tat toy-box

batteries in a draw in the office

magazines and books placed on top of the books in the bookcase of they're being read currently. Then onto the bottom shelf laid the wrong way once finished with to go to the charity shop.

shoes shoe rack. Only takes a moment to grab them off/put them on.

If in doubt, buy pretty storage boxes, at least they're stackable!

Giggorata · 01/09/2018 21:34

wrapping paper - in a box in the big cupboard
Cards - box in the smaller cupboard
Handbags - big wicker trunk
Post - tottering pile on the desk
Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends - not applicable, kids grown up, but used to have boxes for their smaller crap
Batteries - spice drawers, where I keep all little bits
Magazines / books that are on the go - on the go ones are either on bedside table or on big coffee table
Shoes that are almost constantly in use - floor to ceiling shoe carousel thing in dressing room plus wicker basket at back door
I sound quite tidy - how come the place is a mess?

elQuintoConyo · 01/09/2018 21:36

wrapping paper - i don't use it for adults; for children i get the shop to wrap it (they do it here for free)

Cards - i don't buy them. I make the odd one (for DS, DH and close friends).

Handbags - i use one for winter, one for summer. I have a couple of other bags that live in a box under the bed.

Post - receive very little, mostly online. Postcards get put on DS' wall.

Plastic tat from party bags and McDonalds or pocket money spends - bin/recycling almost as soon as it is through the front door, they're never missed.

Batteries - in a small pot (that did house potato salad) in a drawer in the cupboard by the front door (see also post its, glue, storecards, doggy poo bags, dog's nightlight - for her collar so we can see her running in the dark!).

Magazines / books that are on the go - magazines we don't buy. Books on nightstands.

Shoes that are frequently used - shoe rack in the (closed) porch. Other shoes (in season) are kept in a giant shoe tidy with pockets hung up in the futility room. Out of season shoes in a big under-bed box.

Ikea are fantastic for storage. I have some of their drawer tidies for my bedroom: top draw are, in separate compartments: pants/bras/socks. Leaving some space for jewellery in their own boxes and other useful bits. Middle drawer: vest tops/belts/work-out wear. Bottom drawer: DH's drawer of doom that barely closes! These drawer tidies, or the idea of such things, can be used for glue/paperclips/batteries/rubber bands/spare change/extra sets of kets/stamps/sellotape/cards/mini screwdrivers (to open fiddly compartments of children's toys to put the batteries in). Super handy at Winterfest-time (C-mas ssssh, it's September!).

PigletJohn · 01/09/2018 21:37

if you feel the need to put things in bags, get some Recycling Bags (in the household cleaning aisle of the supermart). They are about the size of bin bags, but transparent. The translucent plastic crates are also useful.

Never put anything you want to keep in a black bin bag. Sooner or later a kindly helpful person will chuck it out. This is especially the case when clearing up for building or moving. Much distress has been caused by kindly helpful people.

Maelstrop · 01/09/2018 21:37

I’m tempted for some over the wardrobe door shoe storage, probably fab for toys, too. Out of the way but easily accessible.

SheSparkles · 01/09/2018 21:39

Plastic tat: kallax drona box in DDs room.

Oops posted instead of previewed!
Cards in a box beside wrapping paper
Handbags-shelf in my wardrobe
Post-opened ASAP and either binned or dealt with, then sits in a pile in the kitchen till I can’t stand looking at it and then it gets filed
Plastic tat from party bags- my kids are passed that stage 🎉
Batteries, in a basket in the cupboard above the fridge
Magazines-couldn’t tell you the last time I bought one!
Books-bedside table whilst being read then the bookcase
Shoes-my nice shoes in plastic storage boxes in the bottom of the wardrobe, dh’s chucked in the hall cupboard, ds’ usually at the bottom of the stairs to trip me up 🙄

It all sounds so goodnight doesn’t it ! That is the theory of storage in my house, but it isn’t all necessarily stored in the right place all at the same time!
