Drive at the speed limit

OldSpeclkledHen · 01/09/2018 18:37

I am sick to bloody death of drivers who refuse to drive upto the speed limit.

Ffs if it's 60mph speed limit - drive at fucking 60 -NOT 30 🤬🤬

Three times I have been out driving since last night, EVERY fucking time on 3 different journeys I have been stuck behind some freaking twat who cannot drive upto the speed limit, or overtake a fucking cyclist (but that's another rant)

I am by no means a girl racer, but FFS get out of my fucking way.

Aaaaaand breathe.

I was beind someone yesterday. It was a 60. Doing 25.. It was not a twisty road bar two curves.
When we got to a roundabout. He went in the lane to go 3rd exit.. Then nearly side swiped me swerving back over.
Got to some lights, he went to turn left.. Took it so wide imhe went the other side of the road.. Im Normally very patient. But that took the piss.

Lizzie48 · 01/09/2018 23:59

Is that so, @TittyGolightly ? I've been caught speeding twice, and believe me, my speedo was very accurate. I wouldn't chance it again, not just because of the fine and points on my license, but because of insurance costs going up.

TittyGolightly · 02/09/2018 00:10

Is that so, @TittyGolightly ?

Yep. Loads of info on google. ;)

Meckity1 · 02/09/2018 00:19

@TittyGolightly I can only go on the speedo in the car - the one that the examiner will be checking. I suspect it's about a mile ph under as there is a sign that shows your speed when you go through (usually around 27 in a 30 zone) and when I was practising with SatNav which has independent speed, it seemed to be much of a muchness.

I'm watching with interest, as I said, because going two or three miles under the speed limit in a built up and congested area doesn't seem so bad to me, but I'm here to learn.

starryeyed19 · 02/09/2018 00:21

My driving instructor told me that unless conditions prevent it, you should always be driving AT the speed limit for the road you are on. Is that not the case?

TittyGolightly · 02/09/2018 00:29

So the speedo is reading 28 and the sign registers 27?

Just bear in mind that at 60 or 70 the difference will be more marked.

attentionspan · 02/09/2018 00:31

Driving too slowly doesn't kill people.

Meckity1 · 02/09/2018 00:32

@TittyGolightly I'll pay attention. That's why I'm watching this thread. I'd rather get it right and not be a hazard.

TittyGolightly · 02/09/2018 00:33

I learned to drive in Doc Marten boots on country lanes and an instructor who said holding up other motorists unnecessarily was the worst thing you could do. Reading the road and appropriate speed (not necessarily slow) were the themes that stick with me.

Meckity1 · 02/09/2018 00:36

@TittyGolightly - I'm in an urban environment with lots and lots of congestion. I'm most worried about getting out of junctions and onto roundabouts quickly enough. I can't seem to get the acceleration without stalling. Practice, practice, practice I guess

TittyGolightly · 02/09/2018 00:37

Driving too slowly doesn't kill people.

There was a tragic incident here a few years back. Dual carriageway, late at night, bloke and his son knocked down whilst crossing.

Ever since it’s brought up every time there’s an argument about speeding on local Facebook groups. “How many more people need to be killed by speeding drivers before something is done?” Even when you post the court outcome which points out that the driver was doing 35mph max on a 50mph road in a perfectly roadworthy car. The accident was caused by the people crossing the road in an area with no pavement or street lighting and misjudging the situation. The adult had been drinking.

But facts don’t matter, do they? Reclassify all roads to 20mph. It’s the only way to stay safe. Hmm

SemperIdem · 02/09/2018 00:39

attention

It causes dangerous driving conditions for other road users.

RubyTrees · 02/09/2018 00:42

...holding up other motorists unnecessarily was the worst thing you could do.

Seriously?

I thought the worse thing you could do would be to cause an accident and injure or kill someone because you couldn't control your rage at all the drivers whose actions were upsetting you.

Meckity1 · 02/09/2018 00:56

The most recent fatal accidents near us have been people speeding on almost empty roads v early in the morning. The local traffic lights aren't exactly on a bend but if you're belting down a dual carriageway then they aren't visible early on. All it needs is someone to be crossing (when they have the right to do so) and it ends badly. We get quite a few boy racers late night/early morning

Though as I said above, getting stuck on the road over the moors between Whitby and Pickering behind slow drivers is infuriating.

I don’t get into a rage........

Stillme1 · 02/09/2018 01:04

I wonder where OP lives and drives. I hope it is not near me. I would not like to have someone so strung up and irate in a car, which police have informed me is a lethal weapon in the wrong hands, anywhere near me.
I have been in cars with people of similar attitude and I will not go in their cars ever again.
Driving should be done with manners not bad tempers

Santaclarita · 02/09/2018 01:11

You're just a danger to others if you can't drive to the condition of the road. If it's bendy, you slow down. If it's straighter you speed up and do the limit. If you aren't confident to do that, don't drive.

I've had people slam on the brakes and drop from 70 to 50 on a dual carriageway because there was a camera van. The limit was 70, they were doing nothing wrong but they are twats. They could have easily caused an accident. And best part was they were in the over taking lane, so everyone else started going faster and were under taking, because they weren't morons.

whywhywhywhywhyyy · 02/09/2018 01:13

Agreed with you up until overtaking the cyclists.

There's a really windy road near mine that cyclists seem to love. There's been more than one incident where I've been stuck behind them, the car behind me has raged and tried to overtake, only to find that they're two abreast and that there's about 8 of them together. Then I have to drop back and let the twat in front of me because otherwise they're going to get hit by something coming the other side of the road.

Santaclarita · 02/09/2018 01:14

And yes you would fail your driving test if you don't do the speed limit in your test. It's failing due to hesitancy, and proves you aren't confident in the car. I wish more people were forced to retake their test, there would be fewer people on the roads causing accidents.

Baumederose · 02/09/2018 01:18

Ignore the pearl clutchers.

Incompetent drivers are everywhere and cause accidents. If the police were behind a driver doing 30 in a 60 on a clear straight road, they would pull them over. And possibly look to either charge for careless driving or if it wasn't the first offence, revocation of licence.

Santaclarita · 02/09/2018 01:25

Yeah I've seen police pull over someone doing 30. They had a huge queue behind them on an easy road to drive fast on. They didn't pull over either and the police got someone at the end of the road to basically block it so the person had to stop. Was ridiculous.

Jeanclaudejackety · 02/09/2018 01:34

Jesus people are so weird about driving on mumsnet, you can't mention ANYTHING without being accused of being a dangerous driver, once I sneezed whilst driving should I hand my license in tomorrow 😂😂

There's so many Mnetters who must just walk everywhere for miles and miles and never use any motorised transport, so pious and wondrous they are..

WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 02/09/2018 02:27

I'm not saying that that's not true (the police do a lot of dumb stuff), but how can driving at 30 on a clear straight road with a 60 limit be deemed careless driving?

WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 02/09/2018 02:30

It is not “safer” to drive 30 miles under the speed limit on a clear open road, with no adverse weather. It is dangerous

How?

goldopals · 02/09/2018 02:47

I get super frustrated with drivers who drive below the limit. I know it's a limit rather than a target, but it is annoying.

I also get annoyed with drivers who overtake you and then slam on the brakes, drivers who....
