Drive at the speed limit

OldSpeclkledHen · 01/09/2018 18:37

I am sick to bloody death of drivers who refuse to drive upto the speed limit.

Ffs if it's 60mph speed limit - drive at fucking 60 -NOT 30 🤬🤬

Three times I have been out driving since last night, EVERY fucking time on 3 different journeys I have been stuck behind some freaking twat who cannot drive upto the speed limit, or overtake a fucking cyclist (but that's another rant)

I am by no means a girl racer, but FFS get out of my fucking way.

Aaaaaand breathe.

@overnightangel ok ... am I not allowed to vent? Have you never been angry?

Like I've said before, one journey yes... but three separate journeys all in a row to experience bad drivers?

We all have bad days... I'm obviously just having one!

Have a good evening 😉

You lost me at the overtaking a cyclist comment.

You sound radgey, impatient and entitled.

Lives are lost due to carelessness when driving. If someone is driving that slow, or hesitating to overtake a cyclist, there is usually a good reason.

HINT. It isn't to piss you off.

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/09/2018 22:09

half the speed limit is too slow. Depends, doesn't it. If the speed limit is 50, then it's been assessed as the safe limit for the road, so unless conditions are horrendous, or you're driving a slow vehicle, then 25 is too slow. But if it's NSL, then the speed for the road hasn't been assessed, and 30mph may even be too fast.

Round my way, the main A road has had limits of 40 applied for considerable lengths before an after each stretch of 30. So we have the interesting situation of single track roads with passing places leading off the A road, all sporting NSL signs.

TwoOddSocks · 01/09/2018 22:12

I live in the country so often drive below the speed limit. To be fair most roads have a range of acceptable speeds and while some people do drive dangerously slowly if it's happening constantly maybe the roads aren't as safe as you imagine (especially for new drivers).

TittyGolightly · 01/09/2018 22:13

I posted on a local Facebook group to ask why so many people drove along the 60mph (NSL) bypass at 40mph (max). 90% of the people who responded had no idea it was a 60mph road. Hmm

To add insult to injury, at either end it’s 30mph, so you end up stuck behind them doing 40mph in the 60mph bit and then they speed at 40mph in the 30mph bits.

TwoOddSocks · 01/09/2018 22:13

I actually far too often come round a blind bend to see drivers overtaking cyclists carelessly (there have been a few instances where if I was driving at the speed limit there'd have been an accident because of this). I'd much rather be stuck behind someone a little longer than be in a multi car pile up because someone couldn't wait.

SemperIdem · 01/09/2018 22:15

It is not “safer” to drive 30 miles under the speed limit on a clear open road, with no adverse weather. It is dangerous and you can be prosecuted for doing so just as much as someone doing 80mph can be.

LyndorCake · 01/09/2018 22:20

Oh lord, I think I'm you OP.
Driving out of my town you go through a 30mph, then 50mph, then 30 again, then 70. So many people just do 40mph the whole time.
I recently got caught speeding (34 coming into a 30) which was completely my fault, so i'm more aware and cautious of speed limits. They clearly state during the speed awareness course that slow vehicles are just as much of a hazard as speeding cars. For example, if you see a large, slow moving vehicle on a main road, it usually has flashing lights on it. They are there for a reason.

On the flip side, the amount of people who kick off with me now for actually driving correctly is insane! My FIL said I'm the most annoying person to drive behind.

greencatbluecat · 01/09/2018 22:27

You need to chill out OP. Unless you are living in some very quiet rural spot, three journeys in a row with bad drivers sounds normal to me.

Today - I had somebody overtake me when there was an oncoming vehicle. They nearly caused all three of us to crash.
Yesterday- I had somebody turn right from the left lane, overtake me in the process and thus nearly collide with me
The day before yesterday- somebody opened their car door when I was a few yards away. I had to swerve to avoid a nasty accident

PS i'm a cyclist

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 01/09/2018 22:35

It drives me mental has happened to me today a few times today. I even had a guy pull over on a roundabout and then as I was going round try to pull back into the lane I was driving in no indicators nothing wtf???

sayanythingelse · 01/09/2018 22:36

YANBU. Sunday drivers enrage me!
The worst was a NSL downwards hill near my old house. Big, long, commuter road with fast moving traffic and speed cameras on. There's NSL signs all the way down but it doesnt stop people pootling along or slamming their brakes on to do 30 through the cameras. Living there convinced me that some drivers don't actually know what NSL is, so they just drive 40.

SpringSnow · 01/09/2018 22:37

Cyclists cause a lot of the problems on country roads, especially large groups.

Pissedoffdotcom · 01/09/2018 22:53

A lot of NSL roads are country roads with bends. If you do not know the road you are safer slowing down at bends unless you get some aggressive arsehole behind you who doesn't understand this

I live on a main road that joins an NSL patch that is windy as hell. The amount of accidents we get is unreal because pillocks see the NSL sign & put their foot down without reading the road ahead

ihatetosay · 01/09/2018 23:05

if you were behind me i would drive at 20 just to piss you off speed kills dont you know

Onecutefox · 01/09/2018 23:06

It's also annoying to be around the drivers who are in a hurry and tailgating you. They're sometimes so selfish that would toot at a very busy roundabout wanting you to go into the traffic. And no, I am not holding the traffic but I cannot just go like in the computer games. I hate those selfish drivers. Last time a big lorry was tailgating me on 30 m/hour road up to the roundabout. The roundabout is famous for being very chaotic. No, after a few seconds he beeped me so I could go.

Abouttoblow · 01/09/2018 23:12

I'm with you OP. If someone feels the need to drive at 30mph in a 60mph zone they shouldn't be driving.

Onecutefox · 01/09/2018 23:13

There are also some 40 or 60 miles/hour roads which are very bendy and thus unsafe. It would be very unwise to keep up with the speed limit.

Onecutefox · 01/09/2018 23:16

I remember my driving instructor telling me not to drive 60 at a bendy 60 miles/hour road because of safety. He told me over 40 would be fine. Sometimes you need to apply a common sense.

1HitWonder · 01/09/2018 23:16

Do people really believe that the speed limit is not the speed you have to drive at??

Driving slower than the speed limit is classed as dangerous driving. Imagine you are going down a 60 road at 60 and you go around the bend and drive into the back of some twat going 30 "because they're not in a rush"...

It is dangerous driving, you can get pulled for it.

Jesus I can't believe there are people on the roads that don't know this.

Meckity1 · 01/09/2018 23:26

Watching this with interest as I am learning to drive.

There is a stretch of road between Whitby and Pickering which is a bugger for this. It is just to winding to overtake safely for long stretches, the road is just challenging enough to slow less confident drivers down and every time I have been on it (as a passenger!) I have been stuck halfway down a tailback where a nervous driver is doing forty in a sixty zone and everyone behind them is stuffed.

On the other hand, I'm being really careful about my speed as a learner and I'm pretty aware of it and I have been terrifed by drivers so far up my exhaust it's practically a proposal of marriage when I'm in a very clearly marked learner car and I'm doing two miles an hour under the speed limit.

At least once every lesson we have to deal with an idiot who thinks that speed limits are for losers and I am far more frightened of them than stressed by someone slowing down.

Aragog · 01/09/2018 23:34

www.saga.co.uk/magazine/motoring/cars/using/why-driving-too-slowly-is-dangerous

It can definitely be an offence, and you can fail your test for it too.

Obviously you should take note of weather conditions and specific road conditions, especially on NSL roads In areas such as narrow windy country lanes. That's obvious and part of being a safe driver. The Highway Code and driving laws mention these factors and it is taken into account.

A too slow driver is not a safe driver, just like a too fast driver is.

If they are driving at half the speed limit on a decent, primarily straight road in decent weather, then they are not safe and confident enough to be driving a car. They can be cautioned, or more, for doing so as a result, because they are not driving with due care and attention to their surroundings, and they are inconveniencing other road users - also mentioned.

If it's not allowed in a driving test why would people think it should be okay after they've passed.

RubyTrees · 01/09/2018 23:35

We all have to share the roads with drivers whose actions we have no control over but it’s your responsibility to remain calm and drive defensively.

As PPs have mentioned, you do seem to have anger management issues OP - perhaps you should be working to address those?

NT53NJT · 01/09/2018 23:37

It's a limit not a target

👀

gamerchick · 01/09/2018 23:43

Omg I'm gonna take this opportunity to second this opinion, OP and also add in people do NOT need to slow to basically a standstill to go over a speed bump. (Some are disgustingly steep and yes I slow for these too, I'm talking about average speed bumps which your wheels barely touch and you can easy keep going 30 over AND YET people slow to 10 envy why?!

chicane speed bumps? Where people try to straddle so they don't notice the bump at all, which are perfectly spaced so you fuck your axis eventually?

TittyGolightly · 01/09/2018 23:45

I'm in a very clearly marked learner car and I'm doing two miles an hour under the speed limit.

You’ll actually be far below the speed limit. Let’s assume it’s a 40mph road. Your speedo is reading 38mph, but almost all speedos read over and can be out by as much as 10%. So you’re actually doing more like 34mph. You’re 15% off the posted speed.
