I had a bat in my kitchen last year, tucked up in the curtains in the diner part of the room. It woke up at dusk, flew in circles for a bit then went out the door when we turned the lights off.

I had been a bit mystified by the dark patch in my light curtains, thinking 'surely my housekeeping isn't SO slovenly that my curtains have gone mouldy,'.

BellMcEnd · 31/08/2018 20:46

@kaytee87 my batbubz my choice, hun. Grin

kaytee87 · 31/08/2018 20:48

@BellMcEnd people like you shouldn't be allowed bats

Gingaaarghpussy · 31/08/2018 20:49

Many years ago, i was on holiday with my boyfriend and we were walking arm in arm down a country lane, in the early evening. A bat flew between our heads. I always knew that bats were awesome but that proved it.
We told his mum, she nearly had kittens because she believed that bats could get caught in your hair. But then she also believed that moths were male butterflies.

AviatorShades · 31/08/2018 21:05

don't want to get bat kack sickness, so can't share the love, but...that vid of the Irish family? Pure comedy gold Grin

nhssecretary · 31/08/2018 21:22

@SchadenfreudePersonified that is the loveliest thing I've read
Have just spent about an hour discussing the magic of animals with my husband.
We were discussing how it's so much better then an x box for kids to be exposed to things like this
I will see if I can volunteer to feed baby bats. It would be so exciting

See - I would have been thinking - "Oh, crap. Mouldy curtains again" Grin

Awww...I like bats. For the record: they do NOT get tangled up in your hair and bite you. That said, they CAN bite and some countries have rabies, so it's often best not to handle bats.

We lived in Brazil when I was 12 and one of my brothers found a baby bat. The bat had the CUTEST little ears. They resembled tiny perfect black triangles.

UtterlyBatty · 31/08/2018 22:25

Ooh, I didn't kill the batty love after all! Smile Thank you kaytee.

Schadenfreude I love the thought of your DS firing mealworms into bat ether. Grin

They are amazing creatures, butterfly.

stubble and others... I'm a bat carer, and you can be too! You have to get a course of rabies vaccinations, and then you register with the Bat Conservation Trust and find a local carer to apprentice with. When you've got a year or so of experience, your batty mentor gives you a reference and you go live on the BCT bat carer network, meaning that when a member of the public finds a bat in distress and rings the helpline, your number is given out if they're near you, and you go and fetch the bat to rehabilitate it. June is silly season when the babies are born, and it can get a bit mad. I had 5 pups this year, and it's like having a newborn for a couple of weeks - they have to be fed every three hours or so, day and night, and they are unbelievably tiny! Exceptionally cute, though.

Strax I might be able to ID it from a picture - it depends on whether you got a close up of the face, and especially of the ears. Happy to try.

agnurse · 31/08/2018 22:33

UtterlyBatty

We live in Canada and I've never heard of such a thing being allowed here, but the BCT sounds AMAZING! The bat photos posted on this thread are so adorable. I like bats.

KnotsInMay · 31/08/2018 22:34

OMG, I WISH I had known about the meal worm sling shot business. That would have kept my kids happy for hours on summer evenings and camping trips.

Did the bats catch them?

UtterlyBatty · 31/08/2018 22:36

A few more batty pictures... Smile

Batty

Bat Trust here I come!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 31/08/2018 22:39

They did indeed Knots - They might look as though they are dithering round like little furry drunks, but they are faster than you think and they luffs a mealworm!

Ilovemypantry · 31/08/2018 22:39

Great thread...very entertaining 🙂

Ilovemypantry · 31/08/2018 22:41

Why is it under AIBU though?🤔

KnotsInMay · 31/08/2018 22:42

Would the neighbours think I was bonkers if I sat out catapulting mealworms?

We have got a proper sling shot thing.

What time of year do they disappear and hibernate?

Maelstrop · 31/08/2018 22:42

Similar excitement here earlier, thought the dogs had cornered a hedgehog, couldn’t quite see what was moving on the garden path. Called off the dogs and locked them out of the garden, cautiously approached-a full glass of grass and moss! Why is there grass and moss in it? Like it’s been stuffed!

There’s a party going on in the garden behind mine, but this glass is at least 15 feet from the fence, but definitely wasn’t there earlier when I walked up the path to the pond. Very odd.

KnotsInMay · 31/08/2018 22:43

Ooh, just thought, I could catapult meal worms out of our loft Velux windows.

Lotsofsausage · 31/08/2018 22:43

but how did the strawberry have legs?

Lotsofsausage · 31/08/2018 22:44

I hope this is sent to classics @mumsnet. A fucking strawberry. Jesus wept.

HollySwift · 31/08/2018 22:45

I have a bat (sometimes he brings a friend) in my garden every night. I think he lives here which makes me 😍😍😍 His name is batty and he enjoys flying back and forth down the length of my house. We have a large hedge so it forms a sort of corridor for him. I sit out every evening watching him.

I’m so jealous of all your bats. Can’t say I’m jealous of your mankey strawberry though, OP Grin

Strax · 31/08/2018 23:04

Thanks @UtterlyBatty, here's the only pic I got at the time. Not sure if that's going to be any good!

Bat

Ilovemypantry · 01/09/2018 00:07

Lotsofsausage

The Strawberry didn’t have legs, it was the pattern on the wallpaper.
