To not understand how this different from putting an anorexic model on the cover

Cosmopolitan have a morbidly obese model on their cover this month. I am absolutely behind the idea of body positivity - after children my body is far from perfect and it’s nice to see companies like ASOS use larger women and not airbrush stretch marks etc.

But this model is dangerously obese and risking her health. How is that any different from having a dangerously thin model on the cover?

SJW- social justice warrior

In my experience it's usually used as an insult towards anyone who expresses concern for minority groups or challenges bigotry or misogyny etc.

E.g. on another thread people were talking about white privilege. A few posters denied it was an issue, took the piss and then called a number of posters (to the effect of) hysterical lefties and SJW.
I was called a SJW once for the big crime of holding the radical view homophobia, misogyny and promoting gun violence isn't cool and that rap music isn't exempt in my opinion.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 31/08/2018 23:41

SJW = social justice warrior?

BrazzleDazzleDay · 31/08/2018 23:42

Those pictures are vile, can dole it up all you want but she looks horrific.

I would hate for my kids to think being morbidly obese is ok

Pinkyyy · 31/08/2018 23:42

I think whichever end of the extreme scale you're on you will get hated on. I'm a model/dancer and I'm 5ft9 and a size 8 and get constant comments from people saying how 'i need to eat something' and that 'i look anorexic'. People have real resentment towards people with my physique because apparently we set a bad example, you really just can't win either way.

Bluelady · 31/08/2018 23:46

Oh well, I guess it could have been worse. Hardly applicable to someone who's disgusted by the vitriol that's appeared here, though.

OftenHangry · 01/09/2018 00:08

She has children fgs. Young children. I hope for their sake she will get her head together so they can have their mum for a long time....
Morbid obesity doesn't affect only that particular person, but also their families.

Magnussen · 01/09/2018 00:25

Who has children? Tess ?

Ollivander84 · 01/09/2018 00:45

Yes she has two children

"There are so many better suited full figure women to pose. Like Ashley Graham. Not someone who is morbidly obese."

Well heres the reaction the Ashley Graham Sports Illustrated cover got on MN two and a half years ago.

Thanks for the reminder Hangry .

PenelopeShitStop · 01/09/2018 09:13

But she is fat. Exceptionally so. Are we meant to just pretend she isn't? No hate from me, or a need to shame. I'm just observing a blatantly obvious fact.

Bluelady · 01/09/2018 09:19

It's fine to acknowledge she's fat. Nobody's denying it. It's not fine to revile her, calling her gross, vile, disgusting and then trying to justify it with faux concerns about her health.

For those who think it's OK to do this, substitute lesbian, black woman, older woman, disabled woman for fat woman and see how it goes.

OftenHangry · 01/09/2018 09:22

@HelenaDove all I see is people attacking that Edwina person for criticising full figure model. No idea who Edwina is tbh. Off to google.

There is a difference between fuller figure and morbid obesity...

OftenHangry · 01/09/2018 09:27

@Bluelady you can compare that at all.

Lesbian can't do anything about being lesbian.
Black woman can't do anything about being black.
Older woman can't magically change her age.
Disabled woman can't magically get rid of her disability.

However morbidly obese person can lose at least some weight even if it is with the help of doctors.

What an odd things to compare....

Bluelady · 01/09/2018 09:31

I'm not comparing it. I'm suggesting you replace the word fat with those other descriptors when you abuse and insult fat women so you realise just how appalling your behaviour is. You, however have spectacularly missed the point. What is it they say about not being able to argue with stupid?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 01/09/2018 09:32

Mum was overweight - a combination of having lots of kids and health issues. Not nearly as overweight as the model.

Yes you can get away with all sorts of a use of your body when you are young but my God, the problems that accompany age are multiplied when you are obese. Joints, heart, liver, blood pressure, mobility, high cholesterol...

JillCrewesmum · 01/09/2018 09:50

Being a lesbian isn't a self inflicted health issue or a mental health issue.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 01/09/2018 09:52

Cosmopolitan stuck her on the cover to get exactly this reaction: you’re talking about the magazine. They don’t care about fat acceptance, or women loving their bodies - they want sales so that their advertisers keep coming back. I personally think she is very beautiful but I would not want to be that heavy, and I say that as an already fat woman who is working on getting fitter. As for her health - well unless you are actually her doctor, speculate all you like but you don’t actually know.

JillCrewesmum · 01/09/2018 09:57

No, we don't know. But she'd be a medical miracle if she was that fat and had no incipient health issues.

OftenHangry · 01/09/2018 09:58

@Bluelady you overshot there. But hey. It's your opinion and you are entitled to it. Same like we are entitled to our opinion that morbid obesity is not fine and it's not something what should appear on magazine aiming at young women. Full figure? Yes. Morbidly obese? No.

Timeisslippingaway · 01/09/2018 10:01

I heard this on the radio yesterday. Not sure what they are promoting. I agree OP this woman will probably have as many health problem as someone who suffers with anorexia or other eating disorders.

Bluelady · 01/09/2018 10:07

Another one who's missed the point, Jill. You nasty girls just can't even recognise your bullying behaviour, can you?

CherryPavlova · 01/09/2018 10:09

I think statistically anorexia has a higher mortality rate.
This woman has been quite brave I think. Yes she’s morbidly obese but I’m sure she’s more than her body size. She’s a mother, clearly likes tattoos (Yuk) and enjoys a little glamour. She has a lovely face.
Being fat is a health risk but it’s no more a lifestyle choice than anorexia and certainly doesn’t define you.
Society does treat the very thin women with reverence and the fat with disgust and revulsion. Very, very few people are going to aspire to be fat in our society. It’s just a picture.

OftenHangry · 01/09/2018 10:10

@Bluelady when more people miss the point, it's usually because the point wasn't clearly made. It does happen to all of us.
And you are not a bully? Calling someone stupid, because you run out of proper arguments?
I am done talking with you, because insulting someone's intelligence because they don't agree with you is just childish.

Bluelady · 01/09/2018 10:12

You can only insult someone's intelligence if they've got some.
