to be counting down the days until our hamster dies?

Just that really. 30 weeks pregnant and irritable. I hate our hamster. Is smells after a day. It makes a massive racket on its wheel. It has a horrid ugly cage. I feel guilty knowing it can't run around like a wild hamster should/would. It's just annoying and pointless. Hardly ever gets played with by DD. Am I a vile human being to have had a fleeting thought re how nice it is going to be when hamster is no more and refusing to get another?

Sounds like you need to rehome the poor thing.

3luckystars · 29/08/2018 22:18

Can you rehome it?

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 29/08/2018 22:20

Really? I'm currently looking after my friends DC hamster whilst they on holiday & it's a piece of piss... He sleeps all the time, if not happily wanders around in his ball & doesn't smell at all. Can't believe what a dull pet he is tbh.

Dadsbigsausages · 29/08/2018 22:20

Are there really wild hamsters? I mean, surely to live in a cage with a squeaky wheel is a hamsters lot really.

Disgusting attitude OP. Grow up.

BiggerBoat1 · 29/08/2018 22:22

You can get silent wheels.

You do sound slightly unhinged.

CSIblonde · 29/08/2018 22:22

Aww. Rehome him. Ugly cage & noisy wheel aren't his fault. (there are tons of cute hammy homes with tunnels not wheels which is their pref). He should have someone who loves him. Ask your vet if you can put ad in their reception or if they know someone who'd love him

Sparklepunk · 29/08/2018 22:22

Words fail me....

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 22:22

We are trying. It's online, on Facebook, we've asked about but nobody wants it. DP bought it for DD as a surprise (I had no idea he was getting it and was not best pleased as I knew this would happen) and now I have to biggest case of 'I told you so' !

OP posts:
SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 22:23

@Dadsbigsausages yes they are Syrian hamsters and run up to 10km a day in the wild. They're not meant to be kept as pets really!

OP posts:
SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 22:24

@NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom really? Ours just chews the cage which is so loud and stinks even a day after it has been cleaned. Maybe depends on what type of hamster? Hmm.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 29/08/2018 22:26

I was very glad when our hamster died! No one I know in real life actually enjoys having one.
But you will be called all sorts on here for having negative thoughts about a fucking hamster.

ilovesooty · 29/08/2018 22:26

Presumably you had a choice about its cage?

What is it with all these callous animal posts lately?

Dadsbigsausages · 29/08/2018 22:29

I'm really shocked to hear there are wild hamsters! Anyway, gently broach the idea of rehoming hamster to your daughter or invest in one of the cute cages with coloured plastic tunnels and hidey holes.

They look pretty cute in the pet shop. We had a hamster as kids and my dad got so annoyed with the squeaky wheel he stuck a chopstick through the cage to prevent it turning but the hamster just chewed through it.

Maybe they don't like us either, it's not a very fulfilling life.

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 22:30

I didn't buy the hamster in the first place! I knew this would happen and I know that an animal that runs 10k or more a day in the wild shouldn't be kept in a tiny stinky cage and not be played with. I just can't help but feel that it must have a shitty time in there and must be bored out of its mind... I don't see the point in keeping one. It's annoying and cruel.

OP posts:
Pericombobulations · 29/08/2018 22:31

poor little hamster! Sounds like it is bar chewing as its bored. Get a silent large wheel, and probably a bigger cage if you are keeping it.

It shouldnt smell either after one day, is the cage plastic or wood as the urine may have soaked in and its that smelling now not fresh urine.

Sparklesocks · 29/08/2018 22:31

Ahh it’s only a little animal. They aren’t usually that much bother! Maybe the smell seems worse because of your pregnancy?

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 22:31

@Dadsbigsausages yes. They're called Syrian hamsters. They run an amazing distance in the wild every day!

PlantsArePeopleToo · 29/08/2018 22:32

Not I enjoyed having hamsters. Our last one died in February though and we haven't replaced him as we now have DS.

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 22:32

@Sparklesocks everything is worse because of pregnancy so you're probably right Grin

OP posts:
3luckystars · 29/08/2018 22:32

You can get plastic tank type cages and you wouldn’t smell anything at all.

Ginmakesitallok · 29/08/2018 22:32

Well get it a bigger cage for a start.

PlantsArePeopleToo · 29/08/2018 22:33

And no, DS was not a replacement for hammy Grin

Ansumpasty · 29/08/2018 22:36

If you can’t give him away (although I’m pretty sure Pets at Home take them for free, they definitely take guinea pigs) then look for a better, second hand cage online. Also get him a ball.
