to be counting down the days until our hamster dies?

Just that really. 30 weeks pregnant and irritable. I hate our hamster. Is smells after a day. It makes a massive racket on its wheel. It has a horrid ugly cage. I feel guilty knowing it can't run around like a wild hamster should/would. It's just annoying and pointless. Hardly ever gets played with by DD. Am I a vile human being to have had a fleeting thought re how nice it is going to be when hamster is no more and refusing to get another?

@Ontheboardwalk I didn't buy it. DP turned up with it one day with a huge grin on his face.

Some kind of viral social media campaign is needed.

Perhaps Freddie Starr could redeem himself. Heather Mills would probably be interested too.

Ontheboardwalk · 29/08/2018 23:10

Where did DP find it? I’m intrigued!

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:11

@ElasticFirecracker ha! I heard crickets when I read it...

Buy it a multi level cage with lots of toys and chewable things which will distract him from chewing on the bars.

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:12

@Ontheboardwalk from some random pet store which is now closed down...

I think I’d have to take him to the vet, and hasten his demise. It’s no life for him. Tell DH & DD he ran away to join the circus...

Then later tonight when DH asks you for the real story, glance furtively at the remains of the dinner stew and say only ‘I didn’t quite manage to get to the shops today’.

tworoundsofwaterplease · 29/08/2018 23:15

There are wild hamsters. Buy him/her a bigger cage, and grow the fuck up. You are responsible for the poor thing's well being unless you can rehome it to someone who actually appreciates this little animal that's dependent on you for their care.

SuburbanRhonda · 29/08/2018 23:17

What a shame you’re so far away. I would take it off your hands.

I’ve currently got a lovely Syrian rescued by DD from someone like you who didn’t want her. She’s cute and friendly and has a lovely time pootling round her massive cage.

Please rehome your hamster, OP. No animal deserves to be owned by someone who dislikes them so much.

GreenMeerkat · 29/08/2018 23:17

I can't believe there is someone on here surprised that there are wild hamsters.

Almost all animals are wild or were wild at some point. There are only a handful of species that are truly domesticated, and even then they have wild counterparts.

Did you truly think hamsters just existed to be human's pets?

JamPasty · 29/08/2018 23:18

when you say you're cleaning it out every 3/4 days, I take it you mean you spot clean/remove poo every day and clean the cage totally every 3/4 days? If not, try daily poo-removing and see if that helps with the smell

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:18

@tworoundsofwaterplease now now - I haven't actually done anything bad to the hamster and if you read my posts you'll see despite me disliking the poor sod I've done my best to keep it happy and clean! I'm trying to rehome and genuinely care about the wellbeing of animals which really shouldn't be domesticated! But I'll try to do some growing up in the mean time, if you tell me how...

OP posts:
SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:19

WE ARE TRYING TO REHOME! Pet shop won't take it. It's online and on Facebook and we are asking around. We only decided this yesterday so early days!

Chugalug · 29/08/2018 23:23

Took me a minute or two to realise it's the op that's 30 weeks pregnant, not hammy....my first thought was ...30 weeks is a long time for a hammy to be pregnant

tworoundsofwaterplease · 29/08/2018 23:24

it. That's a living being you're talking about. Go on some vegan or animals rescue pages on fb. PM me where you are if you like and I will try to help. Irresponsible animal ownership makes my blood boil given I give so much of my time to helping this kind of situation. Hamsters are lovely animals but they all deserve to be loved and appreciated. 'Counting down the days until the hamster dies' is what caused me to say grow the fuck up. Not how I'd talk about any animal at my mercy. And of course the pet shop wont' take it-please explain why ever you thought they would?

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:24

@Chugalug it has better fucking not be pregnant I'm telling you!

OP posts:
SuburbanRhonda · 29/08/2018 23:24

How many rescues have you contacted, OP?

If you advertise on Facebook you’re likely to rehome it to someone who ends up hating it as much as you do.

IAmLordVoldemort · 29/08/2018 23:25

I had hamsters as a child. I loved them. They used to pootle around the house in their balls. If you can’t use the balls any more, how do you exercise them?? I mean I’m thinking it’s not as simple as sticking a lead on it.

I’ve been thinking about getting one for DD1 so I’d be interested to know.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 29/08/2018 23:26

Our hamster used to just have free run around the house, and leave the cage open on the floor and it would go back in when it was tired. Cats were never interested in it though (sadly).

ilovesooty · 29/08/2018 23:26

If you rehome it on Facebook goodness only knows where it will end up.

BlueberryPud · 29/08/2018 23:27

I know what OP means. I feel strongly that animals that are kept as pets e.g. cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, snakes, hamsters etc etc should be treated with the utmost love and care and consideration.

I just don't want them in, or within a quarter mile radius, of my house.

ThatchersCold · 29/08/2018 23:27

Poor thing. It must be bored shitless if it never comes out to play. Our hamster comes out every night, he’s so friendly and loves hanging out with us, and he has a good run around in the kitchen for at least an hour a night. After that he’s tired out, fills his pouches with food and takes himself off to bed. We all love him to bits.

I’m not far from you and I wish I could take him but it wouldn’t be fair on the hamster we already have as it would mean less time to play with him.

Hope you find someone to take him who will actually give him a quality of life.

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:28

@tworoundsofwaterplease because they have a sign on the front saying they rehome animals... they just don't have the capacity at the moment. Pretty good reason to think they may have taken her (sorry didn't realise I wasn't allowed to call her it 🤣)

I literally can't think of anything worse than a vegan Facebook page right now.

OP posts:
SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:28

@ilovesooty we only have friends on Facebook. W wouldn't send it to a stranger!

OP posts:
NotUmbongoUnchained · 29/08/2018 23:29

Do vegans eat hamsters??
