to be counting down the days until our hamster dies?

Just that really. 30 weeks pregnant and irritable. I hate our hamster. Is smells after a day. It makes a massive racket on its wheel. It has a horrid ugly cage. I feel guilty knowing it can't run around like a wild hamster should/would. It's just annoying and pointless. Hardly ever gets played with by DD. Am I a vile human being to have had a fleeting thought re how nice it is going to be when hamster is no more and refusing to get another?

It’s a shame you ended up with one but if you say it’s a ‘tiny cage’ I really think you should buy a bigger one. Hopefully you find someone who will take it off you.

youarenot · 29/08/2018 22:54

My mother used to breed the damn buggers when we were kids.
Noisy, horrible creatures.

Was very entertained when one bit my sister and was dangling on her finger (when biting it!) but their eyes kind of pop right out (not literally out) whilst latched on... freaky!

ScottyDog7 · 29/08/2018 22:54

Sounds like OP is stuck with a pet that not only did she never want but also disagrees with being kept captive full stop and on top of that has done some research on best care.
I love hamsters, my house looked like rodent city a few years ago, but I take pleasure from having pets and enjoyed interacting with them. Good luck with rehoming the hamster OP, it sounds like you have enough on your plate. I hope your DP has learnt his lesson on buying animals.

Twotailed · 29/08/2018 22:54

So many hamsters are bought as children’s pets but they aren’t really suitable for it. Poor wee thing.

louise5754 · 29/08/2018 22:54

I had hamsters growing up. They would keep me awake at night running on their wheel.!

We bought dd8 a hamster last August. It's such a character it's awake all day and sleeps at night. I had to put it in the living room as I was worried I'd forget about her being in the kids bedroom.

Can someone else clean it for you?

Needahairbrush · 29/08/2018 22:55

They only live about 2 years dont they?

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 22:55

@Tillytrotter123 there's no cage big enough for any animal! If I bought one that was 10x10m it would still be considered small. The videos of them in the wild really make you realise.

I'm really shocked to hear there are wild hamsters why on earth is it surprising that animals aren't always pets or farmed?!

If it smells after a day then, IME, it either needs a bigger cage or it's sick.

They only live to between two and three anyway, so you're not stuck with it forever. Just ask DH not to buy an more animals as surprises - not really fair on the animal or the person who it's for.

CarolDanvers · 29/08/2018 22:57

I'm surprised that people are surprised that hamsters live in the wild. Where do you think they came from? Created in a lab as a suitable pet for children. Guinea pigs and rabbits live wild too 😲

Polly2345 · 29/08/2018 22:57

Or maybe your sense of smell is heightened with being pregnant?

NotUmbongoUnchained · 29/08/2018 22:58

It is a sad life really. I don’t agree with keeping any animal as a pet really, other than cats because they come and go as they please and choose to live with you.

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 22:58

@Polly2345 probably the latter as DP claims he can't smell it!

Fooferella · 29/08/2018 22:59

I'm with you OP. I have a cat who is old and smelly, has open sores all over and never stops meowing. A part of me can't wait til she pops her clogs. I still feed her, take her to the vet when necessary and give her daily medicine, clean her tray and make sure she has a good quality of life but I'll be relieved when she goes. I get it. YANBU.

Polly2345 · 29/08/2018 23:01

Awh. When I'm pregnant all the bad stuff smells worse but the good smells don't smell any better!

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:01

I think it's ironic that people are calling me cruel, but then suggest things like getting it a ball which is pretty much condemned by RSPCA as it stresses them out and damages their spine... what's more cruel... having bad thoughts about a hamster or buying contraptions from pet stores that damage your hamsters health? This is why humans shouldn't keep pets like this!

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:02

Foofella lets hope your family never feels the same way about you.

When you take a pet you are their world. They rely and trust you completely

NellMangel · 29/08/2018 23:05

I hate seeing animals in cages too. Especially rabbits in little hutches forgotten in gardens :(

Would a shelter take hammy off your hands?

SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:05

@Ontheboardwalk our hamster trusts no one 🤣

OP posts:
SnuggMugg · 29/08/2018 23:06

@NellMangel our local one doesn't take hamsters. I presumed all would be the same...

ana18 · 29/08/2018 23:07

I think pregnancy likely making your sense of smell very sensitive . It did mine . Have you tried shelters ? I'm sure they can help ?

CryptoFascist · 29/08/2018 23:08

CarolDanvers I was thinking that myself Confused

Ontheboardwalk · 29/08/2018 23:09

snuggMugg it should hopefully trust you by the fact you took ownership to provide it with its basic needs.

If not why did you buy it?

Where did you buy it from?

ElasticFirecracker · 29/08/2018 23:09

@BiggerBoat1

Sign it up for a Race for Life if it'll make you feel better.
