Am I unreasonable to not take daughter to hospital?

My daughter has a balloon of a hand. It's extremely bruised and swollen. However, she has no problem moving it and just slight pain when it's proded at. Absolutely no pain moving it.

My mum thinks I should take her and she will have to end up taking her Hmm

Opinions please?

Why start a thread on MN about a child who clearly needs medical attention instead of taking her to A and E? Hmm

FGS take her.

Aspenfrost · 29/08/2018 21:59

Be aware of the possibility of something going on under the surface. You need a diagnosis.

TiffinBox · 29/08/2018 22:01

Are you afraid of the hospital discovering something else op? Is this the reason for the reluctance to take her to hospital? Are you 'known' to the authorities hence the reluctance to seek medical help?

SawnUpLooRoll · 29/08/2018 22:02

I'm guessing from the silence from OP that they're en route to the hospital. Update us when you get back! Hope she's okay!

HoleyCoMoley · 29/08/2018 22:03

Hope she's ok

Orlandointhewilderness · 29/08/2018 22:09

Joining the chorus- take her!!

Crunchymum · 29/08/2018 22:09

So did you go to A&E OP?

sazzle27 · 29/08/2018 22:13

Seelling will make a conclusive x ray difficult...
To be honest I would see how it goes tonight, and take her tomorrow if it is no better or pain or movement is compromised.

Regular, alternated pain relief (will help swelling regardless of minimal pain at the moment).

First port of call would probably be a GP, although I would think they will suggest an x ray. Bonus is hat they can refer you straight for an x ray rather than waiting 4 hours to be triaged and x rayed and seen at A and E 👍🏻

My mum left my swollen ankle for a day to see how it fared - no harm done to me, and from the sounds of it i was in more pain! No breaks and remained fully functional.
Good range of movement is a good sign, although an x-ray is the inly diagnostic which can definitely rule a break in/out

Seabreeze18 · 29/08/2018 22:13

If u didn’t seek medical help then shame on u! Hope she is ok?

BrokenWing · 29/08/2018 22:25

If it’s broken what can a & e do? I’d give her some calpol and wait and see

Seriously? They can stabilise it in a temporary splint or half cast which will help greatly to reduce pain and keep any fracture or break stable until the swelling goes down, they can sort out an appointment with the fracture clinic for you the next day. They can advise on proper pain relief she can take if needed through the night rather than just calpol for an 11 year old.

I'd give my dog more care than you are suggesting for this child!!

Stefoscope · 29/08/2018 22:27

Yes, get it checked out at minor injuries/A&E asap. I had a knock to my finger which resulted in a fracture to a joint and tendon damage. At the time I was convinced it was just bruised, so waited a day before getting it checked out. I had to have surgery on it a couple of days later and 3 months on I'm still needing physio.

maZebraltov · 29/08/2018 22:28

OP said the child only has slight pain even if poked.
DS broke elbow recently, the overnight soft was more annoying than support really. He did like the pain relief, because he was in pain (OP's child is not).

I predict A) OP won't be brave enough to report back B) if OP went, they will have just said wait overnight for swelling to go down and then tomorrow they can cast or splint & xray it again. So basically, waste of time to go tonite.

sophisticatedsarcasm · 29/08/2018 22:30

Last January my daughter fell off the sofa running across it, it was bruised but she was still walking with tiny limp which was normal. After a week she was still limping and it was still red, we took her to the dr who said it’s up to us to take her to a&e. We did luckily we were in and out in 40 minutes Incl X-ray. Turns out she had broken a bone in her foot that’s apparently near impossible to break and David beckham has been on of the only ones to do it. So I’m glad we took her, she had a cast on for 3 weeks but it was worth it to get it sorted

MissConductUS · 29/08/2018 22:35

I'm a nurse. Take her. I won't scare you with the poor possible outcomes here.

Ollivander84 · 29/08/2018 22:38

Take her
I had slight pain in ankle and foot for a week. Day 7 or 8 I went to a&e. I had numerous breaks in my ankle and foot and still no idea how I did it. Some swelling but I was walking on it

delilahswishes · 29/08/2018 22:38

As most (if not all?) PP have said, She needs to be seen. If you have a minor injuries unit nearby I'd go there, or NHS direct are normally great in this situation as they may be able to get you an out of hours doctors appointment or refer you to a smaller (less busy) hospital nearby.

Laine21 · 29/08/2018 22:51

I'm astounded that you would delay, and post the question on here rather than go the hospital. Think for a moment, delaying taking a child with what could be a serious injury to hospital to get checked out would raise alarm bells with any medical professional that eventually assesses her injury. Why would you not take your daughter ffs! What are you so bothered about? I sincerely hope you have taken her and she is ok.

Luckymummy22 · 29/08/2018 23:04

I’ve never broken a bone so I don’t know how painful it is.
My DD is a wimp when it comes to skint knees and paper cuts. It’s the end of the world.

Surprisingly on the 2 occasions she has broken her arm she has not been screaming in pain. In fact she just goes very quiet.

Last time her arm was very clearly broken and when the nurse asked her to describe her pain level she actually rated it lower than I thought

ThirdChildFourthPile · 29/08/2018 23:07

Has the OP disappeared because she has taken her daughter to A&E or because she can't admit that she hasn't? 😂

HildaZelda · 29/08/2018 23:59

Is this thread actually for real?! Christ. I hope the poor child is in A&E now.

nocoolnamesleft · 30/08/2018 00:02

I'm really hoping that the reason you're not replying is that you've gone to A&E.

Another doctor.

Etino · 30/08/2018 13:05

@evietw how did you get on?

SilverHairedCat · 30/08/2018 21:02

@evietw Any update? Is your daughter ok?
