Am I unreasonable to not take daughter to hospital?

My daughter has a balloon of a hand. It's extremely bruised and swollen. However, she has no problem moving it and just slight pain when it's proded at. Absolutely no pain moving it.

My mum thinks I should take her and she will have to end up taking her Hmm

Opinions please?

Jesus Christ. Straight to hospital. You can still move limbs / digits with broken bones.

Breakfastofmilk · 29/08/2018 20:44

Hands are:

Complicated with lots small bones, joints, tendons etc.

Relatively delicate.

Really fucking important for day to day life.

I would not take chances with a child's hand, if it's swollen like a balloon it needs checking.

Llanali · 29/08/2018 20:44

No, I would ice and elevate, and see tomorrow:

As long as she has sensation and movement, and not in serious pain, or at least pain controllable by standard dose appropriate pain killer then I wouldn’t be heading to A and E.

LIZS · 29/08/2018 20:44

Go to minor injuries especially if it is her dominant hand.

SilverHairedCat · 29/08/2018 20:45

@1CantPickAName all sorts. If there are broken bones and they can't treat it today, they'll book her in to the fracture clinic for when the swelling reduces. If it's just serious bruising, I'd imagine they'll give first aid advice beyond Calpol for an 11yo.

ZigZagZebras · 29/08/2018 20:46

I did that recently and it was a broken bone in my hand, needed my fingers strapped while it healed to avoid it moving and causing further damage.
It didn't hurt like I'd have expected but did swell impressively. Ibuprofen helped a lot with the swelling but I'd definitely get it xrayed.

ginandnappies · 29/08/2018 20:46

I broke my ankle once, went to hospital and was told because I could move it, it would be fine. I went back a few weeks later because it wasn't getting any better and it was broken. Not all breaks mean not being able to move it. I'd take her just to be sure :)

Breakfastofmilk · 29/08/2018 20:46

If it’s broken what can a & e do?

They can re set and splint any misplaced bones.

They can refer to a surgeon if necessary.

They can prevent permanent loss of the ability to move her hand normally and feel things normally, which post people use constantly on a daily basis.

AmabelleOnabike · 29/08/2018 20:46

Can she clap? That was the test given to my child. Although she could move her hand, etc she could not clap and lo, her wrist was broken (though not swollen so not the same thing)

Dmacka75 · 29/08/2018 20:47

A & E stands for accident and emergency, shes had an accident which has caused her hand to swell and bruise, I think that's an appropriate use of A & E

savagebaggagemaster · 29/08/2018 20:48

I was advised never to leave a child's hand injury too long without it being checked. Children's hands/fingers can be permanently damaged very easily.

Hidillyho · 29/08/2018 20:50

This can’t be serious.
Your child has a balloon hand which she caught in a door and you don’t think it needs looking at?

Am I unreasonable to not take daughter to hospital?
PaddyF0dder · 29/08/2018 20:50

I’m a doctor.

Go to A&E.

DidimusStench · 29/08/2018 20:50

If it’s broken what can a & e do?

You’re right. OP consult a witch doctor instead Hmm

Petalflowers · 29/08/2018 20:50

I’m with Moody. Ie. If you are concerned enough to ask,the question, then you should go.

cookiesandchocolate · 29/08/2018 20:51

Go to a&e 🤦🏻‍♀️
Ffs

PeachyKeenJellymonster · 29/08/2018 20:51

Are you going to take her

PavlovaFaith · 29/08/2018 20:51

YABVU. You are her parent, you make decisions on her behalf and she clearly has quite a nasty injury. Take her to A&E.

alwaysontimeneverlate · 29/08/2018 20:51

@Hidillyho that is awesome 👏

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 29/08/2018 20:51

Whatjusthappenedthere I can absolutely guarantee that your BIL would have done more than just check movement in the fingers and wrist, even if you weren’t aware of it. He’ll have been looking at the swelling, any bruising, taking pain into account, sensation in the hand, etc. All of that information would have informed the final judgement he made, so it’s pretty irresponsible to suggest that someone who is totally untrained would be able to make the same judgement just by wiggling the hand.

OP I would take her in, better safe than sorry.

SweatyFretty · 29/08/2018 20:51

Ring 111, do what they say?

InsomniacAnonymous · 29/08/2018 20:52

"My mum thinks I should take her and she will have to end up taking her"

So does that mean your mum thinks she should take her? Why are you
Hmm about that? I don't understand your attitude at all.

BuntyII · 29/08/2018 20:52

Oh course YABU!! An injured child needs medical attention.

Laiste · 29/08/2018 20:52

I would go. When ever i've taken a child with a suspected break we've always been seen pretty quickly into x-ray after triage.

1CantPickAName · 29/08/2018 20:53

Full disclosure: my dd caught her hand in the bathroom door and I did take her to a&e, nothing wrong.

OP, take her just incase, you will hate yourself if anything serious has happened.

*thanks mn for reality check
