To ask how to stop DH leaving coins everywhere?

DH has annoying habit of leaving tiny piles of loose change from emptying out his pockets all over the place, Im fed up of scraping coppers into a jam jar which then sits round for eternity looking crap before I have to separate them all out into bags to pay in or find a charity bucket.

any tips on how to stop him from doing it in the first place? It’s a dust magnet and worried about risk of Baby finding a pile once he’s older and putting them in his mouth!

Tell DH not to for above reasons.

TwoBlueShoes · 29/08/2018 03:31

My dad does this. Get him a coin bowl and insist he use it and manages it himself. Like toilet training a toddler. Coins in the bowl. Every time. Make this his problem.

Suggest he uses the coins at the self-serve till in supermarkets or just use a card for all purchases.

Gyoza · 29/08/2018 03:36

Like toilet training a toddler ha! Yes.

I don’t even understand how he collects so much change, I use card for most stuff!

Just put them in your purse and get rid whilst shopping or whatever

Gyoza · 29/08/2018 03:44

@monty27 I sometimes do that for the big ticket coins but carrying around a load of 1 and 2ps? Can’t be arsed with that.

This is a lighthearted post by the way, I will be putting my foot down on the matter with him soon!

When you find the answer, please let me know.
DH has been here, alone, for a month. I've rounded up approx £200, in 4 different currencies this week......

Cat2lady · 29/08/2018 04:27

Glad it’s not just my husband who leaves a trail of loose change (amongst other things) around the house! Fed up of moaning at him about it, if you find out how to get him to stop please tell me too Grin

Mommybearx · 29/08/2018 04:32

Buy him a new wallet with a coin section so he naturally puts them in there and only takes his wallet out.

AltheaorDonna · 29/08/2018 04:59

My late father did this, and he was a hoarder. When he died and we cleared out his two bedroomed apartment we found over 800 quids worth of change in at least eight currencies, some of them defunct (pesetas, francs, lira and Yugoslavian dinari IIRC). It took four of us an entire evening to sort it and bag it up. So this is a habit I have nipped tightly in the bud with my husband. He has a massive old whiskey bottle, all spare change goes in it. Every now and again I get my teenager to bag it up for the bank ( he gets 10%). We usually get a weekend away out of it.

Monty27 · 29/08/2018 05:03

OP in that case make a water feature 😂

Monty27 · 29/08/2018 05:04

Tell him it's a wishing well. Wink

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 29/08/2018 05:05

My other half does this. I bought a tin and just put it all in there. Then use it to pay for parking or when I go to the corner shop.

At Xmas we take it to the coin star machine and cash it up. Last year we had £250!

dancinfeet · 29/08/2018 06:49

get one of those money box tins that you need a tin opener to get the money back out, and dispose of any coins lying around in there. Once it goes in the tin, it stays in the tin!

RNBrie · 29/08/2018 06:58

I bought mine a coin tray - actually 2, one for the bedroom and one for the table by the front door. Any coins outside of these two trays become mine and the money goes in a jar (dh willingly agreed to this arrangement because he is a fool) I used to take the cash to my local bank branch who have a sorting machine so it's no bother. After a year or so I'd saved enough to buy myself a really nice handbag.

Interestingly my fancy handbag has resulted in a dramatic reduction in piles of change left around the house Grin

SeaToSki · 29/08/2018 07:01

Get him something to store it in, and put it in the place that is easiest for him to use ( where he most often dumps the coins). Agree with him that he will use it for reasons above. If he still leaves coins around, put them in the toes of his shoes

borntobequiet · 29/08/2018 07:02

Collect them yourself, take to the machine thingy and spend on fripperies.

Foggymist · 29/08/2018 07:06

I collect them in a self counting money jar and then spend it on things for us as a family or things for me Grin I told him if he didn't stop doing it this would be what I would do, he leaves huge piles of coins from 1c up to €2 (only in one place inaccessible to small hands but it still annoys me), so I keep €2 coins and all the rest go in the jar.

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 29/08/2018 07:10

Collect it together then bank it, don't use the machines they charge a fortune

IncrediblySturdyPyjamas · 29/08/2018 07:10

Why are you scurrying around picking up after him?

Stop it. Surely he would have to pick them up when he does his share of the cleaning?

LakieLady · 29/08/2018 07:14

I recently splashed out on some Clinique skincare, entirely funded by the little piles of change I'd collected from around the house.

There was £180 in coppers once it had been through the Coinstar machine.

Silver goes into the change purse I keep in the car for parking, which I then mostly claim back as it's usually for work.

ImogenTubbs · 29/08/2018 07:15

Ha ha, my DH does this. We now have three coin bowls - one in the kitchen, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It's annoying though!

TheOxymoron · 29/08/2018 07:17

This works....

To ask how to stop DH leaving coins everywhere?
Oysterbabe · 29/08/2018 07:20

Coin bowls. If I'm going to a supermarket with self checkout I'll often pick up a handful to throw in there.

CherryPie18 · 29/08/2018 07:23

Put them in a pot and once a year take it to a metro bank (you don’t need to bank with them) they’ve got a machine where you put all coins in and take the slip to the counter and they’ll give you the cash and they won’t charge!

Shosha1 · 29/08/2018 07:25

Pick it up, put it in your purse ( or somewhere, that you only can access ) once you have enough treat yourself.
