To ask how to stop DH leaving coins everywhere?

Gyoza · 29/08/2018 03:26

DH has annoying habit of leaving tiny piles of loose change from emptying out his pockets all over the place, Im fed up of scraping coppers into a jam jar which then sits round for eternity looking crap before I have to separate them all out into bags to pay in or find a charity bucket.

any tips on how to stop him from doing it in the first place? It’s a dust magnet and worried about risk of Baby finding a pile once he’s older and putting them in his mouth!

Take them bagged correctly to the bank

But bagging up takes time and the bags have to have certain amounts in.

Chances are that the OP will end up with £3.22 in pennies, £2.64 in 2ps, £4.55 in 5ps and £6.70 in 10ps, so unless she can find a bank with a coin machine (I've never seen one) its still faffy for her.

I used to collect up my own coins until I realised it was a waste of time make-work job, so now I just put them in the do it yourself till at the supermarket and they never build up. But I never really have many and I do still use cash quite a bit.

OP, what is your DH doing to produce piles of coins. Robbing fruit machines? I would straight out ask him to please not do this and if he does, collect up the coins and use them myself, spend them in the supermarket or even use the coinstar machine for ease if it's only going to be a couple of quid. I'm all for saving money, but sometimes, there comes a time when you have to think 'life's too short'.

SciFiFan2015 · 29/08/2018 09:48

This is fascinating! We never have coins lying around to the extent that the lack of them was causing problems. We had to arrange to pay the window cleaner by bank transfer and make special trips to the bank to get coins out for lunch money at school (£2 per day).
Coppers go in a teddy bear bank, then about every 9 months counted and the amount split between the children's savings accounts.

Maybe do a money version of the missed doctors appointment posters?

This week I have collected £9.72 in spare change. Last week I collected £4.44

If I saw figures like that, I know I'd act.

ChikiTIKI · 29/08/2018 09:49

You could try making a point of forcing him to tidy the coins. Every time you see them you could ask "do you have time right now to rush to the hospital" because that's what you could be doing if the baby swallows the coins.

My husband leaves the oven on every. single. time. he uses it. Without fail. I usually realise once he has sat down to eat and I make him get up and turn it off. Still a work in progress though.

Nanny0gg · 29/08/2018 09:50

I'd be happy to deal with it and keep the proceeds!

CherryPavlova · 29/08/2018 09:51

We have a tankard they all go in. Every so often the get taken by one of the children to a machine that counts and pays out a voucher for Sainsbury’s. They get about £25 for a full tankard.

Happyhippy45 · 29/08/2018 10:23

The coin sorters are great. I've got a list somewhere of the weights of full coin bags. No counting losing count just tip coins in the bags and chuck them on kitchen scales.

TheFaerieQueene · 29/08/2018 10:26

I’ve seen beautiful floors made of coppers and covered in clear resin. That might be a good use.

Pinterest has photos.

Deathraystare · 29/08/2018 10:47

Gyoza - please send your DH's coins to me! You can keep DH though!!

Happyhippy45 · 29/08/2018 12:00

Thanks to this thread I went to have a look in my tin of full bags of coins to see if it was worth taking to the bank as I'm skint. Also hormonal and I love sorting coins when I am.
Just found £60 sitting on top of the bags!
I've asked DS and dh if they had put any notes in the tin. They said no.
Must be mine then Grin

Believeitornot · 29/08/2018 12:07

I have several handbags. This does not make me disorganised.

Just collected up all the change around the house - £9 in total. Not too bad and we (I thought) had hardly any lying around!!!!

purplecorkheart · 29/08/2018 12:10

This happens regularly in my house. I just scoop them into a huge tub that I keep in the utility room. I bought a cheap coin sorter on ebay a few years ago. I use that to bag the coins once a year. There is always enough for a long weekend away.

Purringkittenmama · 29/08/2018 12:45

I think it's a man thing. A friend who is a cleaner commented that EVERY man she cleans for does this (as does my DH- and now DS (17) too).
No idea how to stop it (I have a saucer in the bedroom for DH and jam jar for DS).

I got one of these a few years back and any coins lying around get put in and the machine does the hard work. Once I've got around £20 i go to the bank and pay it in.

TwoBlueShoes · 29/08/2018 13:04

Now you know what to get him for his Christmas, eh?

BertrandRussell · 29/08/2018 13:07

When my ds was little and played on the floor a lot he was the richest member of the family-he used to just quietly squirrel away any money he found on the floor- and suddenly appear with 20 quid's worth!

DarlingNikita · 29/08/2018 17:12

Just keep gathering them up and keep them for yourself. I accumulate coppers and 5ps in a box and it is amazing how quickly they mount up to cover the cost of a paper or a nice coffee.

Ghanagirl · 29/08/2018 17:20

Keep it and pay into your bank account...

WeightorWhite · 29/08/2018 17:25

If you've got a Metro bank near you they have coin sorting machines and it doesn't charge you, unlike coin star!

MorseandLewis · 29/08/2018 17:40

At Xmas we take it to the coin star machine and cash it up. Last year we had £250!

that is total waste- they take 10%

free at a bank, natwest and hsbc have chuck it it machines and you get 100%

IsaidMrDarcynotArsey · 29/08/2018 22:26

After Christmas last year there were loads of counting coin machines/sorters in charity shops, that were unwanted presents. You can pay for one with this year’s stash Grin

OzymandiasFanClub · 30/08/2018 06:20

When you take your coins to bank, do they have to be in those coin bags? If so, do you have to ask for those at a bank first?

Monty27 · 30/08/2018 06:30

OP do the wishing well. Make it a feature. He empties his pockets at the front door.
How easy is that? Smile

bimbobaggins · 30/08/2018 07:12

I like the coinstar machines, yes they charge but I can’t be bothered sitting around sorting coins and some banks will only let you pay in a small amount at a time.

sprinkleofsunshine · 30/08/2018 07:22

Do we share a husband? Mine does this too.

He seems to have stopped since they've all mysteriously started disappearing though HmmGrin
