To think the n word needs to be completely banned

Rodrigo removed from the B.B. house

I think the meaning of the word has a different meaning in these current times

I personally hate the term and thinknit should be totally banned

But can see why it’s confussing for younger people with it in so many pop songs

If you ban a word then people will just use an alternative: rigger, migger, figger,higger...) this is one of the reasons I dislike "the n word" that and the fact it adds a sense of mystery and allure (tnot the exact words I'm trying to think of)about it.

Words arnt the problem, meaning is.

I like how in Freaky Friday Lil Dicky sees it as one of the perks of being Chris.Brown.

Sashkin · 26/08/2018 05:44

“White trash” was used by white people, about other, poorer white people. So no, it’s not racist though it is certainly classist.

“Honky” is one of those words like “gweilo”, “laowai” and “gaijin” which are (or can be) derogatory terms for white people. But without the years of systemic racism, or the implied risk of physical assault, they aren’t particularly offensive. Just as there are not many truly derogatory terms for “man” in English but there are hundreds for “woman”.

BitOfFun · 26/08/2018 05:56

The crap on this thread is a classic example of privileged people misunderstanding oppression and "equality".

By their logic, it would be entirely morally equivalent for a slave to react with violence to a slave-holder beating them. Clue: it isn't.

Flashinggreen · 26/08/2018 06:01

I think the problem is that young people are more colour blind and are too stupid to realise that for one person it’s re claiming the word and for another it’s offensive.

The Human Ken Doll I think is just too stupid to realise he’s one of those people who when he uses it it’s offensive. I wonder if BB would evict a black person for using the word?

I think also as we become more and more mixed race who is going to be allowed to use it? Do you have to be more than a half Afro-Caribbean? Or is it ok if you’re only a quarter? Or is it ok if you identify as black to use it?

I don't think anybody should say it white or black in any context. Plenty of black people will find it deeply offensive and painful to hear regardless of who says it. It needs to disappear.

BitchQueen90 · 26/08/2018 06:48

There's nothing confusing about it at all. If you're not black, just don't say it. Problem solved. It's as simple as that.

P3onyPenny · 26/08/2018 06:52

I don't think black people should say it either. Not all black people will be comfortable hearing it used at all, even by black people. It also gets it back out there for a whole new generation to hear and normalises it.

BitchQueen90 · 26/08/2018 06:53

"White trash" isn't racist either. It's usually used to describe a certain class of people based on how they live, talk, dress etc (like the phrase "trailer trash" not the white population as a whole.

The white privilege is showing through on this thread!

Good grief. Don’t use the word, if you’re white. And for fucks sake don’t tell black people what they can and can’t say or be offended by!!!

I’m white btw. I just recognise that a white person using that word and then patronisingly explaining to a black person why they should be allowed to is unbelievably ignorant.

Flashinggreen · 26/08/2018 07:19

I can’t help being white and so in turn privileged, I don’t use the N word and wish no one did and it disappeared from use.

Children today don’t understand this and when they listen to music with everyone other word being that they think it’s an ok word to use. If they’re white they still think it’s ok because they don’t realise they have the privilege of being born white IMO. If that makes any sense...

P3onyPenny · 26/08/2018 07:23

Expecting black people who do find it deeply offensive and upsetting to hear (in any context,by black or white) to just suck it up is pretty ignorant tbh.

Ansumpasty · 26/08/2018 07:33

There’s a big difference between the pronunciation ending in ‘ga’ and the one ending in ‘ger.’ They're used in different contexts and one is generally offensive and one is more affectionate.

I was raised in a Black country and there were plenty of young white (predominantly male) teenagers who used the ‘ga’ term affectionately to their friends- kind of interchangeable with ‘homie.’ Their black friends would call them it and it wasn’t used as a racist term.

It’s obvious who and when is acceptable to say it, though. I, as a white English girl, wouldn’t ever have said it, besides singing songs. Then again, I would never have said ‘homie,’ either.
You can’t ban the word Hmm Thankfully, I’ve never heard the ‘ger’ pronunciation said in the UK, ever

TallTilly · 26/08/2018 07:33

I seem to manage perfectly well in everyday life without using the n-word, the c-word, or terms like white trash. It’s not exactly difficult.

I also don’t tend to hear them often either. In fact the place I hear/see the c-word the most is on here (I know not everyone finds it offensive and that’s fine but I do find it very jarring to hear/read. As do most women I know irl).

I’m Glaswegian btw, in response to whoever upthread said that Glaswegians use the c word in a jovial manner. It is true. But I wouldn’t be friends with someone who did in all honesty.

Pengggwn · 26/08/2018 07:44

P3onyPenny

Including in literature?

I teach English at secondary school. If I tried to remove all racist content from the curriculum, how would I aid my students in gaining a understanding of the barbarity of racism? How would I teach them about Empire, the slave trade, no dogs, blacks or Irish? You can't gain a full appreciation of why something is so awful unless you are exposed to some of its detail.

BitchQueen90 · 26/08/2018 08:02

@Flashinggreen no, children won't think it's ok because hopefully their parents will teach them that it's not. It's our job as parents to teach them what words are OK and not OK to use. It's really not difficult.

When my DS hears the "n" word I'll explain to him why he shouldn't say it, just as I explained to him why he shouldn't say the "f" word when he heard it from one of his school friends.

In this day and age there's no excuse for ignorance.

thegreylady · 26/08/2018 08:04

When I was a little girl 40s/50s it was seen in drapers shops as a shade of brown. It was a common name for brown pets along with Snowy or Blackie for white or black pets.
I never heard it being used offensively until the 60s/70s. I didn’t see a black person till about 1960. I lived in Sierra Leone in 1968/72 and by the time we came home the word was being thrown around as a racist insult so other uses disappeared.
My ds started at a nursery school in Liverpool in 1973 when he was 2.5. Up till then he hadn’t known many white children as most of our SL Friends were black. On his first day he went up to a little girl and touched her face saying,’I like you you are the right colour.’ Her parents were from Nigeria. The n word is what we have made it.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 26/08/2018 08:07

" I hate all this- why can black people use it but not whites-"

yes it must make you feel really oppressed 'wowsers'. Hmm

bitheby · 26/08/2018 08:09

Why on earth is this thread still here? It's dripping in racism.

Ansumpasty · 26/08/2018 08:22

@thegreylady

That’s interesting! The story of your son is cute, too

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 26/08/2018 08:27

mind you if you "banned" the word you would have to get hold of every copy of Huckleberry Finn, and make a giant bonfire and burn them all...oh wait..that would make a really good novel wouldn't it? I could call it...wait..what about Celsius 232.777778?

Flashinggreen · 26/08/2018 08:47

I wasn’t going to come back here but will reply since I had an email...

I think that there will always be ignorant people in this world unfortunately and yes I will educate my own children but can’t take responsibility for others. And not everyone will.

Someone said that by using it it normalises it and I agree with that. If black people but I mean rappers etc stopped using it and it wasn’t heard as much by everyone regardless of the colour of their skin I think it would help.

I wish people didn’t have to reclaim a word at all, so some people are allowed to use it and others aren’t.

Language changes over time, my in laws use racist language with ignorance, I try to educate them but at 70+ it is like banging my head against a brick. It only causes me pain...

LardLizard · 26/08/2018 08:51

Why are some people deliberately saying that sorry white people can’t say horrible n wor
I don’t think there is one white person on here that wants to use that word !!

Don’t want to use it!!!

Don’t want want kids or teens or younger people in general to think it’s an acceptable term
