To think the n word needs to be completely banned

Rodrigo removed from the B.B. house

I think the meaning of the word has a different meaning in these current times

I personally hate the term and thinknit should be totally banned

But can see why it’s confussing for younger people with it in so many pop songs

Because not all black people want to hear it or reclaim it,because it becomes more mainstream/acceptable and is thus at danger of becoming more widely used across the board, because its history can get lost,I think it's meaning gets belittled.........

Did you really not pick that up during this very lengthy thread. The black author of the article I linked to explained most eloquently her problem with it. My thoughts are the same. Also a single black person having an issue with having to hear it is good enough for me.

Somebody raised the issue re queer. I would raise the issue of the f word. Frankly I'd have that banned too. It has become incredibly mainstream and some members of the community don't like hearing it being used by anyone. My son being one. He isn't a f or queer. He doesn't have a defect,he isn't strange or out of shape. He's just gay. Hearing those words make him feel like shit. Nobody gay or straight has the right to make anybody feel like shit.

I feel the same way re the word being discussed in this thread.

WoWsers16 - There would be uproar if there was a man only race as such.

There was a series trialled in 2009 called Race for Moore. It was cancelled due to lack of interest and men failing to return their sponsorship money. Next strawman?

In terms of the n-word does anyone actually think that racism and anti-blackness has been so overcome that we are at the point that white people have a right to use it?

MaisyPops · 27/08/2018 08:16

You sound like a bit of a bookburner TBH, trying to control what the general public see or here, for their own good.
Wow.
Well there's a first for me on MN.

Saying I have an issue with misogyny, homophobia and promoting violence first led to accusations of trying silence POC. Hmm

Then when I clarify that I'm actually against ALL misogyny, homophobia etc suddenly I'm a book burner.

And here was me thinking it was a fairly normal and decidely average opinion to think being misogynistic and homophobic was bad. Clearly not. Grin

Sophia99 · 27/08/2018 08:50

@GunpowderGelatine

This argument really is so simple: IN MY OPINION white people cant use it because there's a history of the white race using it to abuse black people. Black people CAN use it because they're reclaiming it.

THE END

Fixed that for you.

IN MY OPINION, if white people can't use it, then black people can't either. All of this 'they are reclaiming the word,' and 'they can use it but no-on else can' is utter bollocks. There can't be one rule for one, and one rule for another.

As many posters have stated though, most white people don't WANT to use the damn word, but screaming at them that they can't, (but black people CAN) is breathtakingly disingenuous. Also makes me laugh how the worst, and most screechy harpies, are all white, far-left PC frothers who think they are the guardians of the minorities.

And as a few posters have asked, (and conveniently, no-one has answered....,) who CAN use that word then? How 'black' do you have to be? Mixed race - 50% black and 50% white? If you have one mixed race parent, are you allowed? Is my half Spanish, quarter Nigerian, quarter Mexican friend allowed to say it?

Absolutely ludicrous. Either no-one is allowed to say it, or everyone is!

I am also PMSL at these posters saying 'why is this thread still here?' Why should it be deleted? Purely because there are people disagreeing with you?! Hmm

GunpowderGelatine · 27/08/2018 08:56

There can't be one rule for one, and one rule for another

Of course there can be. What kind of over-privileged whingey white person would stamp their feet over not using the N word? People need to stay in their own lane

P3onyPenny · 27/08/2018 09:02

So you're saying black people who don't like it have to suck it up and get in their lane. Nice.Hmm

Why do we need segregation, why can't we all travel down the same road?

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 27/08/2018 10:52

" There can't be one rule for one, and one rule for another. "

in view of the rather recent historical events that brought people from West Africa to the USA, Caribbean and the UK, yes there can.
Try reading up on it.

RoseWhiteTips · 27/08/2018 10:59

Why would anyone try to reclaim a word when it is essentially offensive. That does not compute.

RoseWhiteTips · 27/08/2018 11:00

How is this word usage dictum going to be policed?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 27/08/2018 11:17

Can we ban the c word too? A colleague called me this once (we actually get on really well but where he is from its a term of endearment and he fast realised that it wasn't here!).

RibbonAurora · 27/08/2018 11:46

CoalTit no he didn't, other white fans got up and inserted 'bleep' where n word was, KL gave the girl a 2nd chance after explains that she should do the same, she went ahead and used the n word anyway.

Cherrygardenst And what's your point? KL wasn't trying to speak for all POC or the rap community as a whole, just himself, why he uses the n word and why he doesn't want his white fans to use it. Some POC choose not to use or reclaim the word but accept even while disagreeing why other POC do so - regardless NO POC wants to hear it from the mouths of white people.

Why is this so difficult to understand? Most here are claiming they "don't use it, don't want to use it and won't ever use it, no sir, not me" but in the same breath saying it's unfair they can't use it. It makes no sense.

Cherrygardenst · 27/08/2018 11:53

Travis Scott didn't mind. As said previously. He was happy about it.

Cherrygardenst · 27/08/2018 11:53

And I don't use it. Ubless I am listening to music that uses the word. (Obvs not in public).

SpringSnow · 27/08/2018 11:56

Saying I have an issue with misogyny, homophobia and promoting violence first led to accusations of trying silence POC. @Maisy - Chuck D of public enemy described rap as the "black CNN" its intended to be gritty reportage into the harsh realities of life. You want to silence it because it doesn't fit into your SJW bubble. If indeed the genre is the black CNN then you want to silence the press.

CecilyP · 27/08/2018 12:21

I don't understand why any white person would have an issue with black people using it amongst themselves.

There really is no issue with groups using specific language among themselves. But once it is on a recording or used in a concert it is no longer amongst themselves but in the public domain.

And to be honest, that woman at the concert should have known better to be honest. She should have just not sang the parts with the word in it. I don't know why she thought that saying it up in front of hundreds of people would go down well? I enjoy Kendrick Lamar and similar music and I just don't sing those parts.

Well good for you! Perhaps the woman in question simply wasn't as aware or as smart as you. Perhaps she didn't think; the excitement of going on stage was too much for her. Perhaps she wasn't very bright. Even dim people are allowed to go to concerts. KL set her up; I don't know, could he have chosen a song without the N word if he wanted a white woman to sing along with him?

MaisyPops · 27/08/2018 12:26

Well this is getting ridiculous and melodramatic.

Person has an issue with misogyny and homophobia so...

  1. Is silencing POC
Replies it has nothing to do with race, I'm just not a fan of any misogyny and homophobia or promoting violence
  1. Is essentially a book burner
  2. Wants to silence a genre of music that is black CNN.
  3. Is like silencing the press

And here's me still calmly saying I have an issue with things promoting misogyny and homophobia, which until today I'd never considered terribly radical views.

Cherrygardenst · 27/08/2018 12:27

I always sing the n word in my own privacy. It's unnatural to bleep words when singing along imo.

Cherrygardenst · 27/08/2018 12:28

For the publicity.

Seems an odd way of going about it, if he invited a white fan on stage to sing along with him!

Do you think the state should intervene regarding lyrical content you don't like ?

BitchQueen90 · 27/08/2018 13:02

@CecilyP I do not buy that in the year 2018 there are people who "aren't aware" that using the n word is offensive.

TacoLover · 27/08/2018 13:11

Missing out a word in lyrics might seem too unnatural for you but saying a word that has been used to oppress and dehumanize black people for centuries is not?

Cherrygardenst · 27/08/2018 13:20

Why would I miss it out when singing it in home with nobody else around? Most music I listen to has the N word in it multiple times, often as part of the chorus. Nobody gets hurt if nobody is there to hear it.

Cherrygardenst · 27/08/2018 13:20

I also use faggot/queer/cunt/slag/whore/ fucking anything if I'm alone and it's in the lyrics.

BarnabyBungle · 27/08/2018 13:22

It’s bizarre that it’s apparently ok to enjoy listening to music including the N-word, and sing-along to it, but even in the privacy of your own home you mustn’t dare utter it if you’re not black.

It’s also bizarre that on MN its fine to describe someone as a motherfucking wankbadgering cunt, but I can’t write “I hate the word ‘n***’ and don’t believe it should ever be used” without asterisks.
