I guess there’s no arguing with you.
My cousin broke her ribs in a car crash. The other driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and they were fine. I’ve calculated the risk and am a very safe driver so none of my kids wear a seat belt. Why would I risk cracked ribs when I don’t need to.
Well I will once I can leave the house with my previously very healthy child who if he catches measles despite being vaccinated from a child who has not been vaccinated he may well die or suffer permanent damage. After that period passes.

WhatsInAnotherNameChange · 21/08/2018 16:03

Er, mumps can lead to male sterility, deafness and meningitis and rubella can also cause meningitis.

disclosingshite · 21/08/2018 16:04

Arthur, I do give blood and am happy to do so.

I am not happy for my small children to take a risk for an adult.

It really is as simple as that.

chemenger · 21/08/2018 16:06

Do you tell people your children are not vaccinated?

EwItsAHooman · 21/08/2018 16:06

Rubella can also have thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) as a complication, it affects blood clotting amongst other things and cause life threatening internal bleeding.

disclosingshite · 21/08/2018 16:07

I don’t hide it che as you can see from my posts here. I can’t recollect a time it came up in conversation.

MairyHole · 21/08/2018 16:07

You are also risking your babies. Risks are tiny but present on both sides. Did you know only 2 confirmed cases of rubella in the UK last year? Very surprising that your child managed to contract it. Was it confirmed?

Soubriquet · 21/08/2018 16:08

Don't you wish you could grab some anti-vaxxers, shake them and then throw them in a room with people who are suffering to see exactly WHY these vaccinations are needed.

It's not just for you!!! It's for little Daisy down the street who has cancer and can't be vaccinated. It's for Lewis round the corner who had a heart transplant and can't be vaccinated.
It's for Beryl in town who's just found out she's pregnant and therefore protecting an innocent baby.

Pissedoffdotcom · 21/08/2018 16:08

So as you are happy with your decision, you are very forthcoming in advising other people of the potential risk your children pose to them then disclosing? So that they can make an informed decision about being in close quarters with them?

EwItsAHooman · 21/08/2018 16:09

It's for your own child who doesn't get to decide for his or her self and needs you to advocate for them by choosing the safest option, not the option Google said carries a bit of a risk.

EwItsAHooman · 21/08/2018 16:15

Borrowed from another thread but I think it fits here too

Rise of measles
Soubriquet · 21/08/2018 16:15

So disclosingshite you didn't like you being the drunk driver so let's flip it.

Every time you go for a drive, you assume that every driver is competent to drive and not inebriated.

Now imagine if a drunk driver was to hit your car and severely damgage you or your children.

How furious would you be that someone would dream to put your children in that danger?

Well that is what you are doing every time you are around people. You are risking other innocent people because you don't deem vaccinations necessary

Arthuritis · 21/08/2018 16:16

@disclosingshite

Do you tell anyone that your children come into contact with that they aren't vaccinated and therefore pose a potential risk?

How will you feel, if during this measles epidemic, you discover that your children have been mixing with other unvaccinated children unbeknownst to you?

What if they then catch measles?

Pissedoffdotcom · 21/08/2018 16:20

My 8 week old DS has just had his first jabs today. We have been warned to be alert for measles symptoms as there have been confirmed cases close by. If we come into contact with anyone suspected of having measles we have to ring the GP surgery immediately & they will contemplate vaccinating him early as precaution.

Knowing that I have to be even more on the ball watching for symptoms because of selfish pricks not vaccinating their kids makes me really cross tbh. And it is selfish, however you dress it up

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 21/08/2018 16:28

Whether or not you’ve immunised your children dosnt normally pop up in every day conversation because it is hoped that it’s reasonable to assume that you have.
It becomes a conversation topic when there is an outbreak of a preventable and potentially fatal disease. Or if someone is dealing with their child suffering from A PREVENTABLE disability because there are STILL some people who choose to put the rest of society at risk

scaevola · 21/08/2018 16:31

No, I didn't 'kniw' there were only 2 cases of rubella in UK last year.

Are you saying that the published Government figures are wrong? What is the source of the lower figure?

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/735228/NOIDS-weekly-report-week33-2018.pdf

The NOIDS report shows the numbers of cases in England/Wales - the one I've linked is the latest for this year, so shows only the cumulative totals to week 33

MairyHole · 21/08/2018 16:33

Also disclosing, the rubella vaccine carries a greater risk of complication for an adult than a child but both usually offer lifelong immunity (rubella vaccine has lower level of declining immunity than others and so is good at providing long lasting immunity).

I'd be pretty pissed off with my mum (and dad) if she hadn't bothered to vaccinate me even if she thought she was doing what was best. I would then be putting the foetus at risk if I got pregnant accidentally or without realising I was not immune. If I planned to get pregnant I would have to get the vaccine anyway (which if nothing else would be a pain in terms of hassle) and have a greater risk of complication. If I got rubella in the meantime I have to be ill when it could have been avoided and there is also a risk of complication for that.

All those extra risks and hassles to avoid the tiny risks associated with vaccinating. Which also confers immunity for measles and mumps. It just makes no sense to me.

disclosingshite · 21/08/2018 16:35

I don’t think they will get pregnant accidentally at 2.10 years and 1 Hmm

MairyHole · 21/08/2018 16:35

Name change fail scaevola?

www.gov.uk/government/publications/measles-confirmed-cases/confirmed-cases-of-measles-mumps-and-rubella-in-england-and-wales-2012-to-2013

Those are laboratory confirmed cases hence my question was it confirmed. Yours is notifications.

MissSusanSays · 21/08/2018 16:36

People like disclosing are why children should have to be vaccinated to take up their school place. It is a public health concern and people shouldn't be able to opt out without medical exemption. For the good of everyone.

MairyHole · 21/08/2018 16:36

So at what age do they get the vaccine, and what about the other risks?

What will you say to them if they develop arthritis, more likely if they are vaccinated as an adult?

disclosingshite · 21/08/2018 16:38

They get the vaccine (if not already immune) when they are of childbearing age.

Dress it up as you like. Rubella is harmful to foetuses. If there is no foetus, there is no reason to be vaccinated.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 21/08/2018 16:40

My head is in my hands

MairyHole · 21/08/2018 16:42

But why is getting rubella better than being vaccinated when there are risks on both sides? What causes you to be so fearful of vaccination and so blase about rubella? Both run risks of complication but one is obviously more beneficial. I genuinely don't get your thinking.

Wolfiefan · 21/08/2018 16:43

I agree with Soubriquet.
I had measles, German measles and mumps too as a child. Not vaccinated for medical reasons. It was shit. Bloody awful and I was lucky to recover completely.
My kids are vaccinated.
