I have given up going to the cinema because of other people who have no idea that they could just sit and watch the film.

Mamamiaherewegoagainmymy · 19/08/2018 18:18

Sparkling- it infuriates me

Good job it wasn't two weeks ago when I was watching mama Mia hwga

YANBU. I know it would be an extra cost for the cinema to hire more staff but they really could use a person to stand and observe to ensure no one is using their phones. It totally ruins what is a very expensive treat for many people.

Sparklingbrook · 19/08/2018 18:21

Cinema costs a fortune too, only for it to be ruined by anti social people.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 19/08/2018 18:23

YANBU!

If you’re waiting for a call or need to be contactable quickly then put your phone on vibrate and leave the auditorium to answer it!

The light from phones is so distracting in a dark room.

And, people that wear watches/Fitbits in the cinema that have a constantly illuminated face ought to be slapped with an ASBO.
Turn them off or cover them up but ffs stop waving your stupid lit up wrist around during the film. It’s a cinema, not Barry’s Bootcamp. You’ve burnt 32 calories watching the film and they’re completely negated due to the natchos you’ve eaten. There, you didn’t need a calorie counter on during the film after all.

Anxious2niteaaah · 19/08/2018 18:23

I sit towards the front (first or second row) so that regardless of if everyone has their phone screens flashing in and off in the dark cinema I wont see it as they are all behind me and all that is in front of me is the screenGrin

Sandstormbrewing · 19/08/2018 18:23

I'm one of those people. Usually checking that DS has gone down ok for the babysitter and isn't screaming his head off until he's sick as he is prone to do.

Anxious2niteaaah · 19/08/2018 18:25

*on and off

Bluesue26 · 19/08/2018 18:28

YANBU!!!! Had this last week. Woman's phone was flashing for most of the film. I lost the plot and went to get an usher. To be fair they spoke to her about it but she didn't switch it off. It was flashing in her bag. It's exceptionally rude. Why pay for tickets if you're going to be on your phone the whole time? AngryAngryAngry

Beelin · 19/08/2018 18:29

Sandstorm, have you ever thought then that perhaps the cinema isn't a suitable place for you to go, given that your circumstances dictate that you are unable to avoid ruining the experience for other paying customers?

berylmeryl · 19/08/2018 18:31

This infuriates me @Sandstormbrewing that is really selfish behaviour Angry

Mamamiaherewegoagainmymy · 19/08/2018 18:32

Sandstorm- when my dad was a baby I used to go out to check my phone / ring to check everything is ok. And have it on vibrate

DD not Dad!!! FFS!!!

Brave of you to admit it Sandstorm, but personally I think you should be ejected from the cinema with no refund as soon as you screen lights up. So utterly selfish.

user1485342611 · 19/08/2018 18:37

My brother does this. Even his kids tell him off.

It's really, really annoying. But some people seem to think they'll stop breathing if they have to switch their phone off. I was at a beautiful carol service in an old cathedral at Christmas. A young girl beside me spent the whole time checking her phone. I could have killed her.

I was wondering yesterday, while sitting through a 10.30am 'kids' showing of Peter Rabbit, just how hated I would be if I sat and checked Mumsnet. I was going INSANE with boredom.

Decided it was probably frowned upon though, so didn't. Next time I may take my knitting!

steff13 · 19/08/2018 18:41

I took the children to see a double feature of The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2 at a fancy theater. It was a special event, and quite pricey. Directly in front of us, a young woman was texting. Because of the stadium seating, we could look down on her and see her entire conversation. After it became apparent she wasn't going to stop (at least 30 minutes of texting), I leaned forward and have her my input on the conversation. She put the phone away after that.

user1485342611 · 19/08/2018 18:41

Sandstorm will you continue to do it now that you know how much it pisses people off?

Womaningreen · 19/08/2018 18:42

I no longer go to the cinema because too many people are like Sandstorm

I have seen posters on MN say we should put up with it because the cinema is meant to be a social experience apparently

Whatsthisbear · 19/08/2018 18:44

Someone actually sat on their iPad playing games in our cinema whilst at the movies for juniors showing. I would have been mightily pissed off if he had been next to me. He was on the end of our row so I had to sit at a funny angle to avoid seeing the light of his screen. Totally selfish tw*t.

user1485342611 · 19/08/2018 18:45

Between people checking their phone and people munching on smelly nachos the cinema ain't what it used to be Sad

Sparklesocks · 19/08/2018 18:47

YANBU - it’s maddening. There’s something wrong with you if you can’t sit through 90-120 minutes without checking Facebook!

I wish cinemas had more of a zero tolerance policy but know they are understaffed a lot.

Orangefancy · 19/08/2018 18:48

Totally agree! Went to see Mission Impossible at Cineworld last weekend and there were 3 guys on their phones the whole time. I spoke to the guy directly in front of me and he was apologetic, but still, I don’t understand why you’d pay to go to the cinema just to stare at Facebook the entire time! It was totally distracting as the guy in front of me was holding it up in front of his face the whole time. They were Chinese (get a lot of exchange student here) so thought it was a cultural difference as have never come across it before, but judging by this thread it’s not!
