Sandstormbrewing selfish really. Leave the cinema and go to the foyer if you need to make a call (and sit on the aisle if this will be needed). The cinema is expensive nowadays and people have paid to see the film, the light of your phone is distracting and takes people out of the film despite how subtle you might think you’re being.

emmaluvseeyore · 19/08/2018 18:58

We paid a fortune to see a broadway show a few weeks ago and a lady in front of us kept checking her phone. My DP went and complained to the usher as it was so distracting. They came over and waited for her to look at it again before telling her to turn it off. I really don’t understand that - tickets for that show were over $150 each! Just sit and watch it or leave if you aren’t interested!

bimbobaggins · 19/08/2018 19:03

I usually go to a morning screening on my day off when the cinema is practically empty and no one on their phones but I went last week on an evening screening which was full and I couldn’t believe the amount of people on their phones. It really put me off and I think I’ll stick to my matinees

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 19/08/2018 19:07

If you need to check your phone (and you know in advance like Sandstorm), then choose an aisle seat, near the front and slip out. Don’t the that twat.

Womaningreen · 19/08/2018 19:09

Dave Gorman confiscated someone's phone when I saw him on stage.

It was a great show but that made it better. I felt sorry for him though, he gave everyone a chance to take pics, time to upload to Farcebook etc.....told us phones would be confiscated and someone bloody did it anyway!

Hopefully that idiot will never do it again.

My mum thinks a lot of people go to stuff so they can say they did it, but they don't actually care about going. Must be growing money on trees.

Womaningreen · 19/08/2018 19:12

X post
I don't think people should slip out to check their phone
If you need to check it you just can't go

My mum used to have on call, she had to stay in a place where it was okay to have a pager on... didn't include cinema or theatre.

LotsToThinkOf · 19/08/2018 19:17

I've never really thought to sit using my phone in the cinema as it's so expensive for tickets! However, I took my DC to see Ninjago and it was so boring that I decided to reply to some work emails. Within about 3 seconds of checking my phone (with the screen brightness turned right down) there was an usher bollocking me. So I switched it off and didn't dare check it again! Felt a bit put out at the time but happy to stand corrected now. I don't go very often but watching the film is always my priority, this time I was a bit stressed about work so I guess I just wanted to sort some things out whilst the DC were entertained.

Tigertill716 · 19/08/2018 19:18

So I admit I have used it during a children’s film but only for a short time. It’s on silent no vibration and you can dim the screen which means it’s not bright. I did look around to check no one behind me. I wouldn’t generally make a habit and only if at a children’s film. I get the frustration of it’s a really bright screen.

FishesThatFly · 19/08/2018 19:22

Sandstormbrewing - why do you need to know if DC has screamed and thrown up?

If they're ill then you shouldn't have gone out anyway. If they're screaming due to temper which results in them vomiting - then what are you going to do about it whilst at the cinema?

Binkybix · 19/08/2018 19:23

I can definitely see the temptation at a kids film, but aren’t you just teaching the next generation that it’s an ok thing to do?

I find that people don’t do the phone thing so much now there are announcements about the light being annoying. The new one is apple watches every time Simone moves their bloody arm.

Binkybix · 19/08/2018 19:23

Someone, not Simone!

Tigertill716 · 19/08/2018 19:28

Yes I can see that and I have only done it as a one off. I’m just being honest I suppose when a couple have been boring!! There have been plenty that haven’t that I don’t mind admitting I have been glued to.

Binkybix · 19/08/2018 19:30

To be fair, Ninjago was pretty bad!

AimlesslyPurposeful · 19/08/2018 19:30

You make an excellent point.

yaskween · 19/08/2018 19:34

I used to be a cinema usher and phones in the cinema drive me insane! People always seem to have their phone on full brightness too. I've been known to ask them firmly but politely to put their phone away, it's just such an expensive activity for it to then be ruined by someone else's selfishness.

toomanycuddlytoys · 19/08/2018 19:38

Sit behind house seats, then no one in front of you to be annoying 😊

BrewDoggy · 19/08/2018 19:40

Guy next to me today was using his messaging. I craned my neck and blatantly read his messages until he put it away.
People who do this are just selfish bastards. I was very tempted to get his phone and chuck it away.

LyndorCake · 19/08/2018 19:45

I worked for Vue whilst I was at uni (hundreds of years ago now) and for over 18 showings of films, a staff member would have to sit in the back row at the top of the stairs throughout the film. It was great except I had to watch James bond twice in one day Hmm.
While it is the biggest pain in the backside to clean up, I did once (mentally) applaud a customer who bought popcorn so they had something to throw at antisocial cinema guests.

Bubbaduck · 19/08/2018 19:49

One time when we went someone's phone rang out loud and he actually answered it. Didn't even sound like anything important (just small talk stuff like "yeah", "not much", "just watching a movie" etc.) and the "shut up"s soon started all around the room.

smerlin · 19/08/2018 19:55

I hate this. Pretty much never go to the cinema anymore as I am always the one sat next to the person on their phone.

Worst ever- sat watching Dunkirk and the person in the row in front of me typed in 'where is Dunkirk' into Google AngryAngryAngry

MetalMidget · 19/08/2018 20:00

I'm pretty sure* you're legally allowed to uppercut someone into the moon if they're faffing with their phones in the cinema.

*IANAL

Semtix · 19/08/2018 20:12

I went to see Mamma Mia on Saturday, at an Everyman cinema so not cheap! And the woman and her daughter sat next to me talked through the whole film, and had the Wikipedia page open on the mums phone the entire time. Essentially I think the daughter had never seen the first one, so every ten seconds she was asking who somebody was, and then her mum would explain the whole fucking back story. It was infuriating, but I didn’t want to make a scene as the daughter was only about 12 so kept my annoyance to myself!

Sandstormbrewing · 19/08/2018 21:11

Yes, I will continue to do it!

It doesn't bother me, and never has (even pre kids) what bothers me more is people talking and laughing (clearly not about the film) and people bring very young children in to 12A films - recently a toddler to Jurassic World, child was terrified and then pacified by peppa pig on a tablet, loud enough to hear during the quiet bits of the film. Much worse IMO.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 19/08/2018 21:13

Well, as long as you’re ok, eh @Standstormbrewing ?

Sandstormbrewing · 19/08/2018 21:14

FishesThatFly I don't go out if he's ill. I go out and sometimes he gets so worked up at bedtime that he makes himself sick. I don't think it's fair to make the babysitter clean up my kids sick.
