Anyone married but not been proposed too?

I know there are worst problems to have but as the title says I've never been proposed too. Unless me and my H split and I meet someone else then I probably never will.

Anyone else?

I was never "officially"proposed to but did get an engagement ring. We talked about getting married then out shopping one day he suggested we look at engagement rings and we brought one we liked. Then went home and booked a date lol ...no it wasn't exactly a fairy tale proposal but do you know what? We are happy and it never bothers me, am only saying now because the subject has been open for a discussion.

MossyOilTank · 19/08/2018 17:30

I'm married. No proposal. No hen night, no huge blingy meringue, no bridesmaids, no big party, no pro photos, no honeymoon. He insisted on an engagement ring, so I've got both engagement and wedding rings (total cost about £80). None of this was really by choice, but by necessity, because we married quickly due to a terminal illness in the family.

I love him with my heart and soul and I wouldn't change any of it for a second.

youarenotkiddingme · 19/08/2018 17:31

My mum and Dad tell us that Dad just said to Mum one day "shall we get married then" as all their friends were.

Knowing my dad it's probably true Grin

I've been proposed to - never married!

Hadalifeonce · 19/08/2018 17:32

Does it really matter? We have some friends who decided they were getting married, I think this was about August, they had chosen the venue, the dress had been ordered etc etc. Anyway, DH gets a 'phone call at the beginning of December, obviously I only heard one side of the conversation, but it was obvious someone was about to propose. I got all excited try to guess who it was. When he told me, it was the couple mentioned above; I said but they are already engaged.... apparently not, he was seeking advise about where and when to propose. The way I see it is, that if you have agreed to get married, and most of the details are sorted, then technically you are engaged, formal proposal or not.

welshmist · 19/08/2018 17:33

He asked me to meet him in town. Walked me into jewellers to choose a ring, so no never a proposal. 40 years later still together.

WooYa · 19/08/2018 17:33

I didn't get proposed too... we just said to each other 'wanna get married?' then I booked the registry office the day after. Definitely not romantic but just what we wanted Smile

agnurse · 19/08/2018 17:34

My Hubby did a very romantic proposal (actually he proposed twice - in front of our friends and then in front of my parents so they could be part of it) but I knew it was coming. We had been talking about getting engaged for some time and had selected the ring together. We've been married for 7 years and I wouldn't trade him for the world.

I think today "surprise proposals" are not as common. First of all, you need to know the bride's ring size. Secondly, marriage is a HUGE step and needs to be discussed well in advance.

MossyOilTank · 19/08/2018 17:36

Agree with agnurse - we bought a house a had two kids first. I wanted to be sure he was the one Wink

DayBefore · 19/08/2018 17:36

Gosh, I don’t think I know anyone who’s been ‘proposed to’ among all my married friends. It’s a bit old-fashioned, isn’t it? Most couples decide to get married after some kind of mutual conversation, in my experience.

I’ve certainly only encountered the whole ‘waiting for a proposal’ thing on Mn, and I’m still a bit taken aback when I read those threads because the women in them seem so passive. Then again, I also don’t have any SAHM friends — the only ones I know are my some of DS’s classmates’ mothers — so I suppose these things are mandated by location, class, education etc.

Louise5754 · 19/08/2018 17:36

It doesn't really matter but he's never ever done anything romantic or expressed how he feels. I just think this would have been an opportunity to hear it. I think I've been watch too much love island and DTTB lol. Just a tad jealous x

My DH and I were just talking one day and decided we'd get married. No proposal or anything.

It does make me a bit sad that we didn't have that 'moment' but it doesn't take away from the fact we're very happy.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 19/08/2018 17:37

Nah, we just got pissed on cheap wine students and decided to get married. That was nearly 20 years ago.

Punta · 19/08/2018 17:37

Yep I’m married but he didn’t propose. I don’t have an engagement ring. For me, I didn’t like the idea of it being my husband’s job to ask (or ask my dad!) - it was a mutual decision we made and it was obvious after a while we couldn’t be anything other than married.

We got married in Manhattan - just us two. Ours was also done relatively quickly because my dad was terminally ill and I wanted him to know that I was ‘settled’ and happy before he died. Neither of us wanted a party or any fuss and it would have been too much for my family.

cleaningtwenty · 19/08/2018 17:39

OP I have s friend who has had three proposals and never been married, so swings and roundabouts !

(First one left to work overseas and they grew apart, second was a mummy’s boy who kept putting off wedding date so she left-he still lives with mummy in his ‘40s - third one left her for another woman. She’s happy single now!)

haverhill · 19/08/2018 17:39

I’ve been married for 13 years and there was no big proposal. Small wedding, no fancy stuff.

Clionba · 19/08/2018 17:41

Similar to Mossyoiltank above.
It was in the 80s and I never knew anyone of my generation who talked about proposals. We were happy and wanted to have a future together, so discussed marriage. 30+ years later, still happy!

Rememberfluffthecat · 19/08/2018 17:42

No proposal. He gave me a ring in the kitchen and that was that. Still married 27 years later though 😊

Laska5772 · 19/08/2018 17:43

My friends made him get down on one knee just before we went into the registry office ! ( so it would be official!) .
His reaction? 'But this is a brand new suit' !!

In reality this is how he asked me.. We'd been together about 12 years and were out cycling one day - him in front as usual. We slowed down a bit and he said over his shoulder . ' I reckon we should get married.'. Then he cycled off as fast as possible. When I caught up with him a mile or so later . I said 'Did I just hear you right..?
and.. That was it !!

That was 14 yrs ago ..

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 19/08/2018 17:44

No proposal and I made clear I didn't want an engagement ring. Been very happily married for 20 years.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 19/08/2018 17:45

I've had four proposals, never been married. One was mutually called off, two I called off and the most romantic (down on one knee, lovely speech) where everything was booked for 26th July (last month), he called off a few days beforehand! So I'd place much more importance on the relationship itself.

Laska5772 · 19/08/2018 17:46

No engagement ring ,small wedding and we have no wedding rings either.. Perfectly happy with that..

OllyBJolly · 19/08/2018 17:48

No proposal - just decided together that we should get married.

I find this strange

we bought a house a had two kids first. I wanted to be sure he was the one

Why have children before you know you want to spend your life together? Fair enough if marriage is never on the cards but I think it's odd that someone is good enough to have kids with but not good enough to marry...

blueskiesandforests · 19/08/2018 17:48

Anyone who knows me would know a "proposal" would make my eyes roll. I actually have been proposed to twice, but by earlier boyfriends not by my husband (the first time I said "don't be silly" Blush but it was a short relationship and I was leaving the country he lived in, it was silly, the second I said "maybe one day, I don't want this conversation now" and the relationship lasted another year).

DH and I just decided in the course of a conversation that we were going to get married. We'd bought a house together and wanted to marry before having kids. It was exciting, the way deciding to buy a house or to have a child together is but not more so - nobody has to get down on one knee to propose getting a joint mortgage Grin we got married about 5 months after having the conversation deciding to.

TheSconeOfStone · 19/08/2018 17:50

It was the natural next step for us. We went halves on my engagement ring as we were both poor and just out of Uni. My parents paid for our wedding. I wasn’t bothered at the time but now kind of wish he had been more traditional. I was hoping I would be surprised with an eternity ring now we are better off. I have had 21 years of marriage with an intelligent, hard working, loyal and loving man. He compliments me and tells me he loves me everyday. I will live without the proposal bragging rights.

cropcirclesinthefields · 19/08/2018 17:50

No engagement ring or engagement of any type, we had talked about getting married and one day asked me to set a date and that was it. It would be nice to have an engagement ring, maybe one day I will get one from hubby. We celebrate our 1st anniversary in September.
