To think we have just entered the very best part of the year

It’s just cool enough to not sweat in light clothing (in London) - yesterday I only broke out on the bus

The trees are turning and the flat grasslands are back to being green after the recent rain

There’s that lovely approaching term time feeling

It’s now the right weather to get outside for proper walks instead of walks in the shade with the dogs

If you like the ‘C’ word then you can start to indulge by buying the ‘get ahead for the C word Good Housekeeping magazine/start shopping/start making crafts’

All of the lovely autumn and winter clothes are either online or coming into the shops

It’s the main time of year when you can take something new up - new classes, new terms, new resolutions (more people take stuff up now than January)

Spring is nice but seems more unpredictable than Autumn to me (well it was this year with that second lot of snow that killed my bulbs). Winter is good, the first part to me but not as soon as it’s January and there’s at least 3 more months of biting cold.

So now, now is the best time imo - the longest run of the best months - the 4 months to Christmas.

Agreed it is my favourite. Love autumn. Especially as my birthday is in October and I love Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night.

thewooster · 19/08/2018 09:07

I prefer October onwards when the leaves have fallen and you get the beautiful autumn colours.

September is spider month when you get the massive ones so it's my least favourite month.

If I could chop out a few weeks each year it would be from now until mid October. September is also a crappy month for me because of my job registering students, so I'm glad to see the back of it.

FuckyDuzz · 19/08/2018 09:10

The ‘Ber’ months are definitely my favourite

It’s my birthday in October and DS2s in November
Then we also have - bonfire night (my absolute favourite) Halloween and of course Christmas

Cosy jumpers
Hot chocolates
Getting blankets back out for the couch
Movie nights are always better in autumn/winter
Winter food is the best - stews and soups and pies
The smell in the mornings
Crunchy leaves

Ahhh I’m excited Grin

chickenowner · 19/08/2018 09:11

I agree, I love autumn!

It so beautiful in the countryside where I live, watching the leaves change, harvesting our apples, quinces, medlars, figs, pumpkins and pears.

And I completely agree about walking - I can walk for miles and miles in the autumn, winter and spring, much further than in hot weather.

I look nicer and feel more comfortable in autumn and winter clothes - the styles and colours are more 'me'.

I love lighting the wood burner when I get home from work, drawing the curtains, lighting candles.

And I love getting ready for (I won't say it) that special time of year!!

CuntyBumpkin · 19/08/2018 09:15

I totally agree. I am so excited. I bought some boots and autumn clothes yesterday and I was in my element.

It's always been my favorite time of year, even as a child.

I love being cosy and it feels more acceptable to spend more time at home. In the summer you feel obligated to "make the most of it" and be out somewhere.

hammeringinmyhead · 19/08/2018 09:20

Yes! Couple more weeks to get Awful August out of the way and then it's stompy ankle boots and cinnamon season. I have been pregnant all spring and summer so it can't come fast enough.

chickenowner · 19/08/2018 09:23

curly

I have some lovely new boots too!

To think we have just entered the very best part of the year
Idontbelieveinthemoon · 19/08/2018 09:23

From he end of August through to January is collectively known in our house as Hallothanksmas and it's my favourite time of year. September we all go back to school with lovely new bags and pens. October is DS1's birthday and Halloween. November is Bonfire Night and Thanksgiving. December is just perfection.

I love the weather, the nights drawing in, the foods in season and even the smells from September onwards. I'd live in Autumn if I could.

sanityisamyth · 19/08/2018 09:29

I hate autumn. Everything starts dying back. The nights get longer. It gets cold and wet. It seems a very long time until the bright pretty flowers of spring will return. It seems a very long time until the lovely long warm evenings are back. Christmas is a complete nightmare and nothing but unhappy and terrifying memories.

Hecksonaplane · 19/08/2018 09:31

I totally agree with all pp, my dd and I love this time of year although I have enjoyed the summer as it's been lovely.
Normally I hate the summer as it's usually so changeable hot one minute cold the next.

mostdays · 19/08/2018 09:32

No, it's shit. Rain rain rain, drying the washing once again becomes a complete ballache. Evenings getting darker. Uncomfortable most of the time as you can't easily dress for warmish wet weather. The knowledge that the long, dark, bleak days of winter are coming. Gas and electric bills going back up. Ugh.

isseywithcats · 19/08/2018 09:32

looking out the window at the rain coming down when we had planned to enter our nice polished shiny motorbike in a bike show this afternoon all i can think is it could have been dry and sunny today so no today is not the best of the year for me

MillieMoodle · 19/08/2018 09:34

I love all the seasons but I think as I get older, Autumn is my favourite. We live next to a forest and I love seeing the trees change colour - they are the most beautiful shades of red, yellow, orange and brown. I love the smell in the air, the chilly mornings, Halloween, bonfire night, and the run up to Christmas. And I look better in jeans and jumpers than I do summery stuff as I could do with losing a bit of weight Grin

tentontruck · 19/08/2018 09:36

I think I might keep this thread to try to remind me of positive things about Autumn/Winter. All the things you've said are lovely but I always feel miserable with the lack of daylight. I really struggle once it gets to October.

Even in the hottest bit of summer when even your sweat is sweating I feel ok because its light. I normally feel better once Christmas is over because I know the days are getting longer again.

So I'm going to try to think of positives. Another one is that there is much better telly in the autumn!

Amanduh · 19/08/2018 09:37

Not really. I think people have a romantic ideal of autumn but it’s not like that! It’s dull and grey, drizzly, you can’t just pop the kids in the garden or to the park, it’s boring. I love Christmas though! I think the best parts of the year are May-September and then December - could happily skip Jan-April and october-november!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 19/08/2018 09:41

No, spring and summer are the best times of the year. We missed out on spring pretty much this year, but summer made up for it and I don’t want to let it go!

BrieAndChilli · 19/08/2018 09:43

Totally agree, this run of months is my favourite.
My family planner diary starts now so I get to start nice fresh new pages and mess around filling in stuff and setting up new routine for September.
We have about 90% of the families birthdays between now and Christmas so although expensive there’s always some celebration going on.
Halloween
Bonfire night
The whole range of Christmas events and things to do
Dark evenings where you can curl up and be cosy
Boots and chunky cardis
Walks through the crispy leaves
Hot chocolate
Walking in the evenings and being able to see in peoples windows Blush
Stews and pies and apple
Crumble
Not having to bother with gardening
The possibility of snow
The Christmas magazines
Not having to shave legs every day

RiverTam · 19/08/2018 09:56

After the awful heat of earlier in the summer this is just perfect, I still don’t need to wear a cardie or anything other than sandals but the house is cool and I can sleep at night under a duvet again.

I love autumn and winter but I agree that the long hours of darkness can be depressing and if you live somewhere with a lot of rain that’s pretty dispiriting. But right now, September, probably through to half term is just lovely.

Mumashark · 19/08/2018 09:57

September to January is definitely my favourite time of year.

Love all the colours, nicer clothes and Halloween, bonfire night and xmas to look forward to.

ChipsAndKetchup · 19/08/2018 10:02

I love autumn too. And winter. And the run up to Christmas. Stews, cosy evenings, hats and boots.

But I really don't love huge spiders. One jumped out of my laundry pile this morning and has hidden in the utility room. I'm going to try and accept them this year but my fear is huge. Anyone with me?

abitoflight · 19/08/2018 10:03

I have loved this warm summer but I always look forward to September
I like getting house back to myself after the holidays and getting the house all organised
It always feels like a fresh start to me more than September

scaryteacher · 19/08/2018 10:03

This September will be great, as it will be the first one in a very long time that I am not getting either myself or ds ready to go back to an educational establishment. He is just finishing his MA project, and then he is done with education for the moment.

I will spend the cooler weather in the attic sorting my books, and getting rid of stuff, as this time next year I will be in the throes of sorting out our move back to UK and dh retires.

AfterSchoolWorry · 19/08/2018 10:03

Yabu

It's all downhill from here.
Back to the school grind.
Tedious, suffocating, winter clothing.
Poxy, repetitive, Christmas rearing its ugly head again.
Cold, short, dark days on the way.
The endless, bleak, grey of Winter.
Claustrophobic months stuck indoors.

Bleeuuurrrghhh.

MillieMoodle · 19/08/2018 10:04

I get what people are saying about often Autumn in the UK being just wet, muddy and cold, but we still get out - wellies and raincoats are needed here as we're quite rural. The best bit is getting home soggy, cold and muddy, jumping in the shower and then drying off, warming up with a hot drink, watching a film while snuggling under a blanket.

Toyboysrus · 19/08/2018 10:05

Although I like warm (not too hot!) Summer days I don't like the long light evenings. I much prefer it to be dark early and everybody be nestled in at home with my Yankee Candle autumn and winter candles on.
