To think we have just entered the very best part of the year

It’s just cool enough to not sweat in light clothing (in London) - yesterday I only broke out on the bus

The trees are turning and the flat grasslands are back to being green after the recent rain

There’s that lovely approaching term time feeling

It’s now the right weather to get outside for proper walks instead of walks in the shade with the dogs

If you like the ‘C’ word then you can start to indulge by buying the ‘get ahead for the C word Good Housekeeping magazine/start shopping/start making crafts’

All of the lovely autumn and winter clothes are either online or coming into the shops

It’s the main time of year when you can take something new up - new classes, new terms, new resolutions (more people take stuff up now than January)

Spring is nice but seems more unpredictable than Autumn to me (well it was this year with that second lot of snow that killed my bulbs). Winter is good, the first part to me but not as soon as it’s January and there’s at least 3 more months of biting cold.

So now, now is the best time imo - the longest run of the best months - the 4 months to Christmas.

August is our preparation for winter month. Here in we will get frosts at the end of September, in November it drops below freezing and won’t come above until March. Jan/feb we will hit -20.

August means, firewood, service the backup generator and other storm prep. Today DH is making repairs to my car to get it through winter.

I'm with you SoupDragon
cosy snuggling are going on my list of most hated words.

Chickencellar · 19/08/2018 13:10

Nope it's fucking shit , it means rain , wet ,soggy , an end to summer , no light nights in the garden , greyness ,layers on and off to go out of the house , heating back on.
Cosy /snug is bollocks by marketing companies to get people buying coats , hats .

ChipsAndKetchup · 19/08/2018 13:26

@MillieMoodle yep it was a big hairy one that's hidden in my utility room today. It's feet made fucking clicky noises on the floor it was that big. I'm now shitting myself.

Roll on December when they are all dead Grin

OrcinusOrca · 19/08/2018 13:27

I love it too. I love the cold and the rain and the darkness. I hate summer. It's been a horrible couple of months and I'm really looking forward to perking up a bit. I really can't stand summer it's awful.

user1485342611 · 19/08/2018 14:27

I love Summer, Autumn and early-mid Winter. My only gripe with Autumn is that we're not allowed to enjoy it properly anymore. In about two weeks time M&S will have their Christmas cards and wrapping paper out on display, in another 3 or 4 weeks the selection boxes and tins of Roses and Quality Street will be everywhere and a couple of weeks after that people will start putting up their Christmas trees.

Give Us Back Our Autumn.

December 1st is when Christmas should begin.

Nerdybeethoven · 19/08/2018 14:56

I agree almost - give it another week as its still going to be 24/25 in London till the end of the week.

Hangingaroundtheportal · 19/08/2018 15:03

People are rolling out the romanticised clichés about Autumn/Winter on this thread, but in reality we all know it means shit weather, not being able to do stuff with the kids because the weather is shit, going to work and coming home in the dark, and everyone moaning about how bloody cold and rainy it is and saying 'roll on summer'...

RiverTam · 19/08/2018 16:22

That surely depends on your definition of shit weather. Yes, by the back end of January I will probably be fed up of it, but now? And what is all this ‘not being able to do stuff with the kids cos the weather is shit’? Surely with a coat and wellies most things are doable? We don’t backpeddle with DD just because it’s a bit colder or wetter (though in London so no real extremes). If anything I do less when it’s too bloody hot!

For me, anything between 10 and 20 degrees is spot on. But I can always put on more clothes if it’s colder, whereas I can only take off so many clothes when it’s hot.

ladymarian · 19/08/2018 16:24

Yanbu. Love love love autumn!!

Hangingaroundtheportal · 19/08/2018 16:37

Jumping in muddy puddles with wellies on in the cold and drizzle sounds like a lovely idea on paper, but in reality it's rubbish.

sickmumma · 19/08/2018 16:38

Yep I feel the same! My boys birthdays are mid sept and October, then halloween, fireworks and the run upto Christmas! Honestly my favourite time of the year with so much to look forward to and like you said I love the cooling weather,
Getting back into comfy jumpers and boots and autumn walks with the dog and the colours!

Polarbearflavour · 19/08/2018 16:51

I love it.

I can wear my nice Hobbs mac, boots and tights and scarves again! That smell in the air. Pumpkin spice lattes!

fourplusonemore · 19/08/2018 16:57

YANBU. Except the spiders shudders

MillieMoodle · 19/08/2018 18:01

@ChipsAndKetchup ok, I don't like that sort of spider. At all. Clicky noises with its feet? Jesus. There's no need for that. Shock

RiverTam · 19/08/2018 18:15

For you, maybe. But really, is that all you can think of to do in the autumn?

SoupDragon · 19/08/2018 19:12

I can think of many things to do in the autumn. None are improved by the general dampness.

hammeringinmyhead · 19/08/2018 21:37

@Goth237 I'm due 13th November! So glad its cooled off.

RedneckStumpy · 19/08/2018 21:43

Follow up from my last post, the pickup is fixed, however the snow blower needs new tires

I wish I lived where days and leaves were ‘crispy’. Here it’s more soggy and mucky than crispy.

I hate winter with a passion and autumn is the pealing of funeral bells for it.
The faff of layering clothes on the children, then coats, hats, scarves, gloves and getting said clothing dry after washing. In summer we throw on shorts and T-shirt and just go.

Turning lights on at 3pm is shit. Energy bills are shit.
But the wind in winter pisses me off more than anything.

DrCoconut · 19/08/2018 22:21

All this snuggling under a blanket and sipping hot chocolate after crunching through leaves or going sledging just sounds like an advert for a holiday resort or romantic movie. Who actually has time to go on endless walks and watch movies suffocating under a blanket? The reality is kids unable to get out and let steam off because it's cold, wet and dark, scraping ice off the car at 7:30 to go to work and DS2's asthma re emerging. Add in the horrible ugly frumpy clothes and it's a no from me. I'm 😔 that the weather broke for our holiday, it's overcast and dull, bring back the ☀️.

PaigetheRepahite · 20/08/2018 17:00

@chickenowner thanks v much
