I do that too, SoozC, correct those in my head. I'd never do it as a posted response.

I see really outraged and defensive posters saying, "How can I read a wall of text? It needs PARAGRAPHS, it needs PUNCTUATION...".

Well, maybe it does, but it doesn't have those things so, if it's unintelligible for you then you'll just have to backspace out in high dudgeon... I'm sure the OP will be sadder not to have your input.

ProfessorMoody · 19/08/2018 10:01

Mairy - I can imagine Grin It's like that in the staffroom at school! I only tend to bother as I've said above, when people on Facebook are slating teachers or on occasion, when people are being racist or homophobic on Facebook. It annoys them more than anything else, which is the general idea.

pictish · 19/08/2018 10:04

And just to get it off my chest....

Could OF, would OF, should OF...

No no bloody hell NO!

HAVE! Could HAVE, would HAVE, should HAVE. It makes grammatical sense you see, whereas using ‘of’ renders the utterance or sentence meaningless!

HAVE! Ffs.

pictish · 19/08/2018 10:05

Again, apologies...I had to burst that boil.

JacquesHammer · 19/08/2018 10:05

Although I won’t be dissuaded that correcting the grammar of the rabid bigots on social media, the “why dunt they speak english proper” brigade is absolutely the appropriate course of action.

Boilin · 19/08/2018 10:06

I think it's hilarious when people try to correct your grammar and use poor grammar whilst doing so. This just happened to me on another thread and it's the first and only time I've ever chosen to correct someone's grammar!

Fifthtimelucky · 19/08/2018 10:06

I silently judge, but would never correct anyone's grammar on Mumsnet or other social media.

I do correct people's spelling or grammar at work (when given draft documents to approve or comment on) and once pointed out (after the event and in private) to my then boss that she had pronounced a word wrong in a meeting. It was clearly not a case of dialect or accent. It was just wrong.

Other than that, the only person that have I ever corrected (children excluded) is my oldest friend. She said something like "He gave it to Fifth and I".

I teased her about this (we had by then been friends for over 30 years) and was surprised that she thought she was right. She reminded me that our old primary headteacher was constantly correcting children who said eg "Fifth and me are going swimming after school". She thought it was always "Fifth and I". I thought, given that she was a primary teacher, she should know better, so explained.

ProfessorMoody · 19/08/2018 10:07

Exactly, Jacques.

drnectarine · 19/08/2018 10:08

Soozc - IME shit teachers always blame the results of poor teaching on laziness.

Bombardier25966 · 19/08/2018 10:08

If someone is being a dick, I'll correct their grammar. I don't do it to make myself feel better as you're suggesting, OP. I already feel good. I do it because they're being a dick.

Perfectly summed up @ProfessorMoody. If someone is (repeatedly) posting with the intent of being a goady fuck, then they can't complain when someone gives it back. And that's entirely the case here.

(Yes, I know I shouldn't start a sentence with "And ..." Smile)

mammmamia · 19/08/2018 10:09

I was about to post what pictish just posted.
Spelling and grammar are very important to me but I’m not a dick and I don’t go around correcting people, on here or IRL.

Could of would of etc - just plain incorrect and I’m amazed at how many posters get this wrong. I’ve even seen it at work and i work in a precessional firm in the city. Again I would never correct it but come on. It’s just not that difficult.

mammmamia · 19/08/2018 10:09

Professional FFS!

pictish · 19/08/2018 10:10

There are times when a little grammar pedantry is just the thing Jacques, yes.

Like the story about the bigot chiding a Muslim woman on the bus for speaking a foreign language, telling her that when she’s in England she should speak English. A woman sitting in front of her turned around in her seat and retorted, “She’s in Wales...and she’s speaking Welsh.”

Birdinthetree · 19/08/2018 10:10

SoozC was reflecting on your laziness comment too - dd is an awful speller, imo, but she is not lazy and she is not dyslexic - she is apparently "average".

JacquesHammer · 19/08/2018 10:11

Pictish

My absolute favourite in the local rag was someone who posted in response to a well thought about post “shame they’ve not able to string a sentance together”.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 19/08/2018 10:12

I do it when people are being arseholes. You spelt Grammar wrong, btw.

Tomatoesrock · 19/08/2018 10:13

Fifthtimelucky i say that too, Fifth and I. I and Fifth. Myself and Fifth. Blush If you can explain. I need to nc soon anyway.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/08/2018 10:15

If you're engaging with a bigot though, would you not just address the bigotry? Rather than confuse the issue with a SPAG correction?

I get the Welsh story though, pictish, I live in Wales. I can't speak it. I know maybe, two or three words?

Tomatoesrock · 19/08/2018 10:16

Just check last post typo. Haha I MEANT TO TYPE I USE GRAMMAR INCORRECTLY. Not correctly.... The typo probably caused some giggles inside.

JacquesHammer · 19/08/2018 10:16

If you're engaging with a bigot though, would you not just address the bigotry? Rather than confuse the issue with a SPAG correction?

When the bigot is criticising OTHER people’s use of English there’s no confusion with discussing their SPaG. People in glass houses is such a useful tool.

MairyHole · 19/08/2018 10:16

Tomatoesrock

Here's a guide! en.oxforddictionaries.com/usage/i-or-me

My best tip is: if you are unsure that you are using a word correctly, restructure your sentence to avoid it if you can!

"Myself" is rarely used in the correct way these days.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 19/08/2018 10:19

Mumsnet is full of self important assholes OP. Imagine being that pathetic and self important that you need to pick on the way people communicate to make yourself look smart and feel good.
You don’t look smart, you look like a cunt and the majority of the population laugh at you.

Tomatoesrock · 19/08/2018 10:19

MairyHole Thank you

C8H10N4O2 · 19/08/2018 10:20

.You other thread (which I assume means this will go as a TAAT) was genuinely incomprehensible.

There is a difference between quibbling over an Oxford comma or typo and being unable to parse a post properly.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/08/2018 10:22

Jacques I guess if they're doing that then there's no confusion, no. I wasn't thinking of SPAG Bigots. Are they a 'thing' now?
