The pic about not using punctuation correctly, (helping uncle jack off a horse was funny,) but there a few more corkers out there. Here's my 3 contributions... Grin The first one is my fave!

Not a dig at anyone honestly.......... just a bit of fun. Smile

As a few posters have said, many people have poor grammar and spelling for a multitude of reasons, and it's not because they are 'thick!' And yeah, it's pretty nasty to just go in and correct someone's grammar and spelling when they are upset, and asking for help.

I cannot bear posters who correct others' spelling and grammar. They come a Ross as ignorant and dull at best and rude and nasty at worst. But that article is badly written and someone being asked to evaluate someone based on the quality of a formally written submission type piece is a world away from some knob taking it on themselves to point out errors in a casually written online post.

Lockheart · 19/08/2018 09:42

The correct use of written language is important.

“Let’s eat, grandma” vs “let’s eat grandma”.

There’s a big difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse, and helping your uncle jack off a horse...

Writing (or typing!) something incorrectly can really change the meaning of a sentence.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 19/08/2018 09:45

It’s all about context though isn’t it? If I receive a personal letter or email sprinkled with spelling mistakes I’m not going to correct it. If it’s an opinionated load of waffle on here I might feel differently.

YouTheCat · 19/08/2018 09:45

Punctuation saves lives!

MairyHole · 19/08/2018 09:46

That's definitely true Lockheart, which is why you would always correct and teach children. But most people on here are capable of using the context to avoid misunderstanding. (If a post is truly unintelligible then that is different.)

ProfessorMoody · 19/08/2018 09:46

If someone is being a dick, I'll correct their grammar. I don't do it to make myself feel better as you're suggesting, OP. I already feel good. I do it because they're being a dick.

Typos are obvious mistakes. Poor SPAG isn't.

It's also perfectly OK to be passionate about something. Some people care about handbags and football. I care about the correct use of language. It fascinates me.

HTH.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/08/2018 09:47

Agree OP. I've seen it on threads in good humour with the OP fully engaged in that and that's fine.

I've seen it on other threads where posters just correct (usually) the OP but also others if they feel like it. I always imagine that they were the type to be launching themselves out of their chairs with their hands pointed skywards, desperate to be picked to answer teacher's question...

Without a doubt they're inadequate people, feeling that they must make their mark somewhere... and the best they can do is on a chatboard, correcting someone who hasn't asked or consented to be 'tutored' and feels worse for the interaction. Pathetic. Every.Single.Time.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/08/2018 09:49

ProfessorMoody, this isn't your playground. Set up your own board if you want to run riot to your 'passion' of correcting people.

If I see it, I'll report it because it's pathetic behaviour.

Lydiaatthebarre · 19/08/2018 09:50

That doesn't excuse you being rude professor.

I write for a living. But I also post on here using a phone and clumsy fingers. I don't need someone jumping to the conclusion that I have poor grammar and teaching me how to suck eggs.

DadDadDad · 19/08/2018 09:52

Those are fun, Lockheart, but in real life, we have no problem using context to be sure what exactly was meant. If my son texted me "let's eat grandma" I would assume he had just sent an invitation to a meal to the wrong person not that he was proposing cannibalism! Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/08/2018 09:53

... and I completely agree with AuntieStella, I happened to find the Pedants' Corner and it's a really nice board. I learned quite a bit about the usage of two words that look similar but are used in different context.

I foolishly suggested that these 'angry correctors' should go and post there but realised this was no place for them. Funnily enough, there's no place for them here, nobody wants them!

ProfessorMoody · 19/08/2018 09:53

Oh! I've been told! LyingWitch has spoken and I must obey!

Hmm

If you'd read what I have posted properly, you'll see that I said I only do it if someone is being a dick. I very, very rarely correct on Mumsnet. In fact, I'm not sure I ever have.

I tend to do it on Facebook posts where all the comments are slating teachers for various reasons. Those neanderthals can rarely spell. I'll carry on doing it if I feel the need. Internet randoms don't tell me what I can and can't do.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/08/2018 09:55

If they're being a 'dick' then tell them so, or don't. Your call. Not your place to correct other people's SPAG.

I won't be telling you what you can and can't do but if you do it and I see it, I'll report it. Not just you, anybody. It's a shitty thing to do.

and keep your ridiculous humphy face to yourself.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/08/2018 09:56

I don't post anywhere else so feel free to be a SPAG-warrior where else you like...

Birdinthetree · 19/08/2018 09:56

It's a shitty thing to do and the grammar pedants have heard this over and over again, they know they come across and how it makes their victim feel, yet they continue - do they have low emotional intelligence?

JacquesHammer · 19/08/2018 09:56

Earlier this year I had a client who created a “super team” of freelancers. We eventually parted company (totally amicably) as he wanted a company to do one part; and they only would if they did everything.

The website was strewn with errors they had made.

So I contacted him and said “no sour grapes but...” Just had a look on the back of this thread and whilst some have been corrected the first line of the website has a glaring mistake. It is shocking that companies charge a premium and don’t even check their work.

Guienne · 19/08/2018 09:56

When you have to rely on a poorly-researched Cosmopolitan article to support you, you've really lost the argument.

SoozC · 19/08/2018 09:57

I see errors on here ('would of' is a pet hate) but only correct them in my head; I'm a teacher so I do it enough for real at work!

But they do frustrate me sometimes. I know lots of children with no additional need who are just lazy with grammar and spelling and I can see them growing up to continue their laziness, never really learning the rules because they can't be bothered.

However, posters on here are an unknown quantity so I don't bother to comment. I'd like to sometimes but it's usually taken so badly when I see others do it that there doesn't seem much point. No-one is going to learn if they're angry.

TerfsUp · 19/08/2018 09:58

infrobt

I think you'll find that it's "in front".

You're welcome.

MairyHole · 19/08/2018 09:59

ProfessorMoody it's a dangerous game though! If someone ever tries to correct grammar in my friendship group about 3 copies of Fowler's come out...

ProfessorMoody · 19/08/2018 09:59

If they're being a 'dick' then tell them so, or don't

I find correcting their poor grammar is much more effective.

I won't be telling you what you can and can't do but if you do it and I see it, I'll report it

I'm really fucking terrified. Seriously.

and keep your ridiculous humphy face to yourself

There you go again, telling me what to do. Nope. HmmHmmHmm

TerfsUp · 19/08/2018 10:00

in fact autism may well be the reason that people are unable to spell or use grammar correctly.

Bullshit. There is no correlation between autism (a developmental disorder) and the inability to spell or use grammar correctly.

Tomatoesrock · 19/08/2018 10:00

I think it is mean to point it out harshly, but ok to do it kindly. I dont use grammar correctly. I grew up in an area and home where grammar was not important. Is that my fault where I was born. I have learnt some of my mistakes as an adult as through MN. I am still learning. I have some SEN issues too and at times it takes ages to post and I will still spot mistakes afterwards.

I still get things mixed up. Be kind.
