To think the sign in NDNs window is naff and unnecessary?

New NDNs, moved in about a month ago. Haven't actually spoken to them yet but they've got a dog, I've seen it out in their garden, it's a rottweiler I believe.

Tbh I'm just happy that so far I haven't heard it barking, so so far so good, haven't worried about it.

Today, the ndns have put a sign in their front window. It says : "Warning! A dangerous dog lives here. It bites. You have been warned"

Myself and dh have 4 dc between us, the dc like to have their friends over sometimes and I think the sign is really giving off the wrong vibes, it's not the nicest area but the sign is making me uneasy. We have a cat too.

It’s to prevent bugulars. What exactly is it that bothers you about a sign?

hotstepper4 · 18/08/2018 23:53

Just that I don't want people to see that we live next door to a dangerous biting dog when we have 4 dc.

Its just a home protection item. I have one that says trained dogs running loose.
I have a 14 year old JRT/Staffie cross with arthritis. She would never hurt a fly.

NonaGrey · 18/08/2018 23:55

The sign doesn’t mean the dog is going to break out of the house and savage anyone (people or cats)

It means “delivery people - don’t stick your fingers through the letterbox”

It’s fairly common .

You are over thinking this.

nibblingandbiting · 18/08/2018 23:55

It's a silly daft sign.
If the dog actually bites liked claimed the dog would have been pts long ago. Think about it.

MrsTommyBanks · 18/08/2018 23:56

"Just that I don't want people to see that we live next door to a dangerous biting dog when we have 4 dc."

I don't get what you mean. Sorry I'm not trying to be obtuse.
In what way can your neighbours dog or signs possibly reflect on you?

GunpowderGelatine · 18/08/2018 23:56
Confused

Are you worried that people will think you live next door to chavs?

CSIblonde · 18/08/2018 23:57

Is it a joke? Tho' if as you say, its not the best area, perhaps they see it as cheaper than getting security cams. If the dog attacks a neighbour, visitor or child etc their sign won't be seen as mitigation.

ashdeeashdee · 18/08/2018 23:57

yes YABU

pigsDOfly · 18/08/2018 23:57

Well yes, they probably are using the sign to deter burglars, but I'm pretty certain putting a sign in your window stating you own a dangerous dog does not absolve you from responsibility if the dog bites or injures someone, even a burglar.

It's very possible that the dog is completely harmless but you won't know unless you talk to them. I think if my neighbour had a sign like that I'd feel a bit uneasy about it too.

MrsTommyBanks · 18/08/2018 23:59

My ex MIL had a sign that warned of feral children. Non were feral.

Defender90 · 19/08/2018 00:00

We have a sign that says

Beware of the dog.

He's very sarcastic.

He isn't actually.

Nobody has taken the sign seriously.

It's a deferent. Mine was just to let folk know there's a chance you'll meet a dog if you come through the back gate.

Duskqueen · 19/08/2018 00:02

My DM and DF had a sign like this for our soft, daft miniature Schnauzer, she didn't go around mauling anyone and my mum and dad hate anything common. It is just a burglar deterant and was a bit if a joke, by the end she didn't have too many teeth so couldn't have hurt anyone if she wanted too.

ProfessorMoody · 19/08/2018 00:03

I have a sign that says "Beware of the chickens". Am I a chav too?

ILovePierceBrosnan · 19/08/2018 00:14

I have a sign that says “Badly behaved children will be made into pies”

No pastry has been rolled in anger yet

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 19/08/2018 00:16

We have a dog sign in our house, just a subtle hint to tell burglars the house ain’t empty and your ass will get bit if you enter 😊

SpectacularAardvark · 19/08/2018 00:18

We've got a dangerous dog warning sign on the back gate, we don't even have a dog, it's just in the hope that it might make burglars think twice.
I don't see your problem.

Womaningreen · 19/08/2018 00:28

What MrsTommyBanks says.

StopAndChat · 19/08/2018 00:35

What exactly is it you are worried people will think OP?

You have to give us more than that because I have no idea what the problem actually is Confused

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 19/08/2018 00:36

Rotties are invariably far softer than their reputation would have you believe. They're notoriously sensitive. You'd have more problems with a lot of Jack Russells.

As for the sign... it's a burglar deterrent. I really can't see the problem with it. If the dog is actually going to bite, that's the issue, not the sign (and you can thank the NDNs for giving you fair warning).

Grumpbum123 · 19/08/2018 00:37

My 8 yr old spent his pocket money that says beware of the python.
He’s not wandering loose, he just liked the sign

Sparklesocks · 19/08/2018 00:38

I think you have to remember that anything they choose to display on their own property isn’t about, and doesn’t reflect anything to do with you or your family.

Rebecca36 · 19/08/2018 01:00

It's not a lot different to, "Beware of the dog". Nobody will think otherwise.

Will your visitors actually look at a sign in someone else's window? I certainly wouldn't.

MrsHoodwink · 19/08/2018 01:12

Yabvu and a tad pretentious Hmm

I have 3 dog signs. One on the front saying “german shepherd loose past this point”, one on the back gate “dogs running free” and one in the window by the door “beware of the dog”.

This isn’t because my dogs might eat the neighbors kids, but in fact to let delivery men/jehovas witnesses/burglars etc know that they will be bitten if they enter the dogs space.

Mainly because I’m terrified of having my dog blamed for someone’s injury even though they’ve intruded too far into my property

If you do happen to live next door to a dangerous dog then simply leave it alone Hmm

MrsHoodwink · 19/08/2018 01:14

Just to add my “dangerous dog” is soft as anything and lives with a 2 year old, just (as shepherds tend to) defends the property against strangers
