To think the sign in NDNs window is naff and unnecessary?

New NDNs, moved in about a month ago. Haven't actually spoken to them yet but they've got a dog, I've seen it out in their garden, it's a rottweiler I believe.

Tbh I'm just happy that so far I haven't heard it barking, so so far so good, haven't worried about it.

Today, the ndns have put a sign in their front window. It says : "Warning! A dangerous dog lives here. It bites. You have been warned"

Myself and dh have 4 dc between us, the dc like to have their friends over sometimes and I think the sign is really giving off the wrong vibes, it's not the nicest area but the sign is making me uneasy. We have a cat too.

I have a Rottie, I also have a sign on my gate telling people that she lives there, it’s actually not a burglar deterrent, it’s to warn the unsuspecting postie/delivery person that if he wants to put a parcel in my garden he’s likely to be savagely attacked by my monster/dangerous dog and get licked to deathSmile
It’s a sensible sign to display.
Dogs are territorial and some would bark, growl or even nip somebody who enters their home who they don’t know.
Also Rotties only bark when they need to, it won’t cause you any problems there.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 19/08/2018 10:41

Makes me want to get a 'rabid cocker spaniel lives here...'

nonetcurtains · 19/08/2018 10:43

we had a sign that said 'Beware of the Dog, he'll be hiding from the Cat'

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 19/08/2018 10:51

I have this sign up - fuck knows what that neighbours think of me Grin

OP perhaps you could ask your neighbour to invest in a sign that reflects the quality of the neighbourhood, could they have their sign in Latin maybe?

Cave canem.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 19/08/2018 11:05

Sorry if this has already been said but I understood it that if anyone is bitten or harmed by the dog whilst on the owners propery they are not liable for damages if a sign clearly states that you should be aware that a dog lives on the premises and may well bight you.
I agree with op tho, I’d hate to live next door to a sign that said that 😳

FesteringCarbuncle · 19/08/2018 11:07

What a bunch of snooty precious posters
I pity the police where you all live
Get into a safe, gated, Trueman show type community where the trees are buffed up and let the rest of us live in peace

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 19/08/2018 11:08

Also can’t really get my head round why anyone would want to keep a pet that they had to warn people about, just a personal thing

Aprilshowersinaugust · 19/08/2018 11:09

They leave themselves open to prosecution and the loss of their ddog with that sign. We have a rotty that would protect its family if we were burgled, we could fight a court case saying she was defending her home etc.
Your ndn has just freely admitted her ddog would savage simply because it wanted to.
Read a case and the dog was shot on scene.
Nice in front of the dc I am sure.

Flameless · 19/08/2018 11:09

Is it this sign?

Sorry haven’t read through all the posts and someone might have said this - but why not ask them if the dog actually does bite? Explain you are a bit worried about the children being so close. Any rationale person would be happy to have that conversation if they put up a sign like that. As others have said it is probably a deterrent for burglars - you might find the dog is a big softy.

Dollymixture22 · 19/08/2018 11:23

My kitten on the other hand does bite! I have no warning sign😂

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 19/08/2018 11:23

I think it's a legal thing. If someone breaks in and the dog bites, I believe the owner would be liable for dog bite if there isn't sufficient warning. Crazy world, but yes if your dog bites an attempting burgular, rapist, murderer in your own home then you could be facing the wrath of the dangerous dogs act and damages to intruder if you haven't warned them

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 19/08/2018 11:26

Dolly I’d rather be bitten by your kitten than a Rottweiler tbh😳
Good point tho, as neighbors I don’t think it unreasonable to actually ask if the dog should be avoided. What if one of the kids popped over the fence to get a ball back?

hannnnnnnxo · 19/08/2018 11:26

If the dog did actually attack people then the owners would be shouting themselves in the foot as that sign would be an admission of owning a dangerous dog. So if anything happened in the future, it would be proven that they knowingly had a violent animal and it would probably be put to sleep. Therefore I would probably say that their dog is not aggressive, as if it was the owners would be treading a dangerous line. It’s more likely that the owners are using that sign just for security reasons to put off potential burglaries rather than actually having a violent dog.

You sound ridiculous OP.

HTH

If you enter an enclosed garden with a dog in it without permission that’s a really stupid thing to do. Also rude.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 19/08/2018 11:34

Yes stupid and rude but potentially fatal

YeTalkShiteHen · 19/08/2018 11:36

The simple answer to that is don’t walk into someone else’s garden without asking Confused

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 19/08/2018 11:38

Well of course I agree hen but surely it would be good to know if the dog is a big softy or a dangerous animal if you live next door to it?

DorisDances · 19/08/2018 11:40

Just a thought, if you are starting to get worried, why not make a point of introducing yourself to your neighbour - build a bit of rapport so if you have a future issue you are better placed to be able to have a quick 'nip it in the bud' word.

YeTalkShiteHen · 19/08/2018 11:41

Aintnothingbutaheartache it’s definitely worth asking.

WorraLiberty · 19/08/2018 11:42

Dogs can be unpredictable when someone randomly jumps the fence to retrieve a ball and kids should know that, even if the dog is a 'big softy'.

katielouise3 · 19/08/2018 11:49

The sign is supremely weird, unless the dog is dangerous. If he IS then he should not be in a domestic home.

You could put a couple of equally naff signs up yourself if you wanted OP.
