To think the sign in NDNs window is naff and unnecessary?

New NDNs, moved in about a month ago. Haven't actually spoken to them yet but they've got a dog, I've seen it out in their garden, it's a rottweiler I believe.

Tbh I'm just happy that so far I haven't heard it barking, so so far so good, haven't worried about it.

Today, the ndns have put a sign in their front window. It says : "Warning! A dangerous dog lives here. It bites. You have been warned"

Myself and dh have 4 dc between us, the dc like to have their friends over sometimes and I think the sign is really giving off the wrong vibes, it's not the nicest area but the sign is making me uneasy. We have a cat too.

AIBU?

They are warning people they have a 'dangerous' breed of dog, it's actually a responsible sign to have so that people are aware. They haven't done it to irritate you, they're probably sick of the pearl clutching when people come round and didn't expect to see it.

TakeMeToKernow · 19/08/2018 08:10

I can’t articulate myself as well as some other posters, but just wanted to say - I get you, OP. Yanbu.

A couple with a Rottweiler made a comment to my OH (well, not to, but loud enough so he and others could hear) as he was passing them yesterday: “ooh, they’re very trusting, going past so close to her mouth like that”. The dog was unmuzzled and on a slack lead, given the size of the path, no one was passing unreasonably close. I guess the people who choose to say things like this also choose such signs.

ScoobyGangMember · 19/08/2018 08:18

It does seem unnecessarily aggressive. I'd give them a wide berth. Which may well be what they're aiming for. Or maybe they think they're hilarious. Which they're not.

Duchessgummybuns · 19/08/2018 08:31

My sign says:

Beware of the Dog.
The cat is shady as hell also.

YeTalkShiteHen · 19/08/2018 08:33

Duchessgummybuns I had “beware of the dog. The cats are not trustworthy either” when I had my boys Grin

MN sure does seem to love wasting police time.

jarhead123 · 19/08/2018 09:03

I know what you mean OP. It's almost like 'if our dog bites you then you were warned so tough!'

ErictheGuineaPig · 19/08/2018 09:07

I've got a 'warning, bears in the area' sign on my back garden. I hope nobody shops me to the police!

I really wouldn't take the sign seriously. As others have said, it's probably put there as a burglar deterrant.

Tigger365 · 19/08/2018 09:13

StellaHeyStella it was a while ago, but I want to say eBay?

I'd be tempted to take a photo of the sign if I were you. I'm sure they'd take it down pretty quick if the horrible dog did bite someone. Assholes. Proudly announcing that their dog bites, wtf?

longwayoff · 19/08/2018 09:20

I dont have a dog warning sign but I do have a dog. I wont be warning any uninvited intruders about him in advance. He will introduce himself.

CherryPlum · 19/08/2018 09:22

And people with 'kids will be made into pies', or 'beware, killer cat lives here'....yeh fine, that's obvious to everyone that it's meant as a joke. Whereas with dogs, unfortunately we all know what real harm they can actually do.

Arthur2shedsJackson · 19/08/2018 09:27

The best sign I ever saw was on a gate in France - CHAT LUNATIQUE.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 19/08/2018 09:28

I wonder if people put those type of signs there because they think it absolves them of responsibility if the dog subsequently bites or damages someone. A sort of “Well, the sign was there, so it’s your fault” kind of thing?

gettingtherequickly · 19/08/2018 09:33

I have a "beware of the dog" sign on my gate because I don't want people just walking into the garden when the dogs might be running free.
Nothing to do with them attacking someone, and everything to do with me not wanting the dogs to escape out of the gate.
It's just a warning that they are there.

YeTalkShiteHen · 19/08/2018 09:34

Foxyloxy1plus1 yes that’s why. Not that our dog is aggressive but after a BT engineer walking into our garden and kicking the dog because she gave him a fright bounding up to him, we put the sign there to warn any other fucking arseholes random people walking into the enclosed garden that there is a dog.

PeppermintPasty · 19/08/2018 09:35

My mother likes these signs, she has a similar one to deter burglars.

The truth is, she's terrifying. No need for a sign about the soppy dog.

Strugglingtodomybest · 19/08/2018 09:39

Ah, another crazy thread. Happy days. I had no idea that people read anything more into beware of the dog signs than: they have a dog. Every day's a learning day on here!

arranfan · 19/08/2018 09:43

when I see a "beware of the dog" notice outside, I will ring from the car and politely ask that the dog is confined to another room before ringing the doorbell. AIBU?

You are being the definition of rational and reasonable. I'm taken aback that people don't sequester their dogs while you're visiting. It's rude to jump on anyone but the idea of their dogs messing up a nurse's uniform when you have visits to make to others - what are they thinking?

Leesa65 · 19/08/2018 09:45

Some of you are proper snobs

OP you are being ridiculous and snobby

FFS

YeTalkShiteHen · 19/08/2018 09:47

Some of you are proper snobs

Absolutely, if the sign said “springer spaniel lives here” or “Lhasa apso lives here” I’m betting it wouldn’t have had the same response!

Rotties are brilliant dogs!

AstralTraveller · 19/08/2018 09:51

Awkward in law though if the dog does bite someone as the owner clearly knows the dog is aggressive.

YeTalkShiteHen · 19/08/2018 09:52

And so do any visitors thanks to the sign.
