To think the sign in NDNs window is naff and unnecessary?

New NDNs, moved in about a month ago. Haven't actually spoken to them yet but they've got a dog, I've seen it out in their garden, it's a rottweiler I believe.

Tbh I'm just happy that so far I haven't heard it barking, so so far so good, haven't worried about it.

Today, the ndns have put a sign in their front window. It says : "Warning! A dangerous dog lives here. It bites. You have been warned"

Myself and dh have 4 dc between us, the dc like to have their friends over sometimes and I think the sign is really giving off the wrong vibes, it's not the nicest area but the sign is making me uneasy. We have a cat too.

YANBU I've seen 'dogs running loose' etc but that does seem OTT not exactly sure you can do anything about it, but in your position I wouldn't like it either x

MaisyPops · 20/08/2018 18:12

minnierose3
That's a sensible sign.

To be honest any simple 'be aware there is a dog sign is probably quite reasonable.

It's the attempt at being a smart arse and giving the impression you're all up for a fight that makes a sign like the OP's neighbours ridiculous.

Poloshot · 20/08/2018 18:17

None of your business in my opinion.

minnierose3 · 20/08/2018 18:19

My in-laws have a sign at their farm that says 'forget the dog beware of the owner' with a picture of a gun. They don't have a dog or a gun 🤦🏻‍♀ I understand it's for potential burglars but I still think it's strange 😂

OftenHangry · 20/08/2018 18:24

Actually the cute unsuspected dachshunds are the most aggressive breed.
But no one moans about them. They can cause a lots of damage too though.
In the end it is always down to the owner

Saffy60 · 20/08/2018 18:27

Also...If it does bite and they have advertised that they know it is dangerous and they are aware that it bites, it makes them way more culpable in the eyes of the law! He is probably as soft as mush... For instance if you keep farm animals and have a bull it is not wise to put up a sign saying "Beware of the bull", as you are saying that you know the animal is a danger, far better to put a sign saying, "Bull In Field". I have a sign saying German Shepherd Dog Lives Here.Grin And a pic of him!

81Byerley · 20/08/2018 18:27

My dogless neighbour has a sign which says "Before you try to climb these walls, remember that my dog likes balls." I'd have a chat with the neighbours and find out whether their dog really is dangerous.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 20/08/2018 18:44

Lol, can’t really see the problem to you.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 20/08/2018 18:50

Lol, can’t really see the problem to you.

Bigchair · 20/08/2018 18:50

Yes it's well naff.

MissConductUS · 20/08/2018 18:52

Awkward in law though if the dog does bite someone as the owner clearly knows the dog is aggressive.

There's a big difference between a dog that's generally aggressive and one that's challenging an intruder.

dorisdog · 20/08/2018 19:06

I love dogs. I've known lots of Rottweilers that are lovely and soppy. I struggle to understand how people are scared of dogs, because they are my fave thing! However, I do think it's a bit weird to say you have a 'dangerous dog.' I know lots of people have those kind of signs, but ones that actually advertise that their dog is 'dangerous' - I can see how that might seem a bit intimidating. I'm not sure there's much you can realistically do, though, OP. Could you chat to them in the street sometimes and just say you're a bit nervous of dogs and ask if they're dog is friendly? Maybe once you've had a conversation and actually met the dog it'll seem easier.

Vicky1990 · 20/08/2018 19:06

I had a relation that used to be a postman.
If he ever came across a sign like this at a property he delivered to he would not deliver mail to that house.
If he was to do so and the dog came out of the house and bit him the owner would have said its your own fault.
I would contact the council dog warden for advice.

Ravenesque · 20/08/2018 19:49

The sign is neither naff nor unnecessary.

My favourite beware of the dog signs are ones I used to see in Ireland. They just said "Bold Dog". They make me laugh because I'm not really sure how threatening a naughty dog really is. Grin

Thehappygardener · 20/08/2018 19:56

Please don’t worry about the notice your neighbours have put in their window, most people wont notice it, it’s not an unusual notice, and your friends and visitors will know it’s nothing to do with you.

For what it’s worth, we have a sign that says ‘Beware of the dog ..... and the cat can’t be trusted either!’

Having said that, when our soft and rather soppy 9 kilo dog goes the front door, she is usually barking if she hears a delivery, etc, so we hold her or put her in another room, when we open the door, as I certainly don’t want her to nip anyone, which she never has, but I also don’t want people worried about coming to our front door.

My sister has one of those vicious nasty rotties, I fear for my face every time I’m near it- because it kisses me and licks me to death, she’s as daft as a brush and just as soft, her best friend is a guinea pig!
Owners make dogs dangerous not dogs, if however you entered my sisters property uninvited then it’s playtime for her, she’s only protecting her mum and dad from undesirables! If you aren’t invited in you’ll be leaving a few limbs less!!

longwayoff · 20/08/2018 21:06

Who hasn't envied the Malone family on Gogglebox with their 5 - five! - Rottweilers that like to sit on laps? No, me neither but I'm vastly entertained by the dish of cakes they leave on the coffee table expecting them to be dog resistant.

OftenHangry · 20/08/2018 21:17

It really might be just to deter people who have that horrible and dangerous habbit of trying to pet dogs they don't know.
I have to really hold myself until I confirm with owner it's ok.
Also parents watch their kids more when they see this dog.
It actually doesn't have to be dangerous at alll, but owners had enough of kids running towards their dog excitedly (not just kidsBlush) wanting to pet it. Dogscan get scared and then they can react badly.

nearlythesummer · 20/08/2018 23:00

Op, I understand what you mean. I wouldn’t think twice about it if I was visiting your house & it was next door though. If it was on your door, then I would think that’s a strange joke/chav/they’ve got a horrible dog!

Mummyschnauzer · 21/08/2018 06:53

Dear lord! You’re not a dog person are you? I’m hoping your NDN comes on here saying they’ve moved into a nice new house unfortunately their lovely dog is being upset by ndn seeming running a nursery with 4DC screaming in the garden/playing music constantly having friends over. Disturbing their peace and to top it all their bastard cat keeps shitting all over their garden and fighting with other cats in the middle of the night. They can’t leave their back door open due to the noise of the kids and the cat wandering in. Or they could just be getting on with life cos they’re not hysterical and realise they don’t live in an isolated farm house .

Teacher22 · 21/08/2018 07:05

Never mind the dog, they are naff neighbours and signal that your area is going downhill. I should move now before it is too late.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 21/08/2018 07:16

I would be ensuring my lawyer was aware of the sign

Hmm AELOMH you have posted some totally ridiculous replies but this is hilarious! I doubt you even have a lawyer and as for calling the police about it, even more ridiculous. I feel embarrassed for you!

YeTalkShiteHen · 21/08/2018 07:17

I would be ensuring my lawyer was aware of the sign

Well it’s not logging it with 101 but it’s still funny Grin

olympicsrock · 21/08/2018 07:28

I’m totally with you OP. If I went to drop my children off at a play date best door to a house with this sign I would be concerned about the safety of my child as accidents do happen and dogs get out occasionally despite precautions.

justbinthefeckinbyebyebox · 21/08/2018 07:49

I also like to worry my visitors with a 'beware of the rottweiler' sign!
Those who know me know that I haven't got one 😁
