AIBU to not want to wash my hair every day?

I have extremely oily skin and my hair gets greasy quickly, by bed time it’ll be greasy. I’ve tried loads of shampoos I’ve tried going days without washing for my hair to get used to it and change but it’s hideous. I currently wash it every other day, and it’s too greasy to wear down on day 2. Dry shampoo doesn’t really make it any better. I want to be able to wash my hair at least every other day and not look like I’ve washed it with olive oil. Do you guys have any shampoo suggestions.

You need to quit sulphates and silicones. Co-washing might help you.

FASH84 · 18/08/2018 16:32

Lush shampoo bars are good, and free of nasties, not sure I'd co-wash as that's usually for curly hair which is prone to dryness and frizzing

Fluffyears · 18/08/2018 16:34

I just wash mine every day as i’m Cleaning my body and teeth so why have dirty hair?

mommybear1 · 18/08/2018 16:34

Try using dry shampoo at night Batiste is good apply liberally and tie your hair up. Alternatively when you do wash your hair rinse off in freezing cold water apparently it helps close the pores

MaisyPops · 18/08/2018 16:36

It takes time to break the grease cycle. Shampoo strips your hair of oils and if you have oily hair then your scalp produces more and so the cycle continues. After a few days of leaving it (yes it's a bit disgusting) then oil production slows.

I tend to wash mine 2-3 days apart now.

Nodancingshoes · 18/08/2018 16:36

Mine is the same - I have to wash it every day or its hideous. I have tried to do it every other day but it just looks awful on the second day. What is co-washing?

Me too. Works for me.

Merryoldgoat · 18/08/2018 16:40

How long is it? I use a donut plus decorative headband between washes. It looks styled and neat and ‘on purpose’ but hides the grease.

Atetoomanyjaffacakes · 18/08/2018 16:41

I have given up trying and just wash everyday

huggybear · 18/08/2018 16:41

I am the same. Some people wash their hair once a week and it looks fantastic, others look manky after 8 hours. We are all built differently and I don't think I could leave it more than a day even if I was able to it.

People say leave it until it's gross and I've tried that too but no luck either sorry.

SerenDippitty · 18/08/2018 16:41

I wash mine once a week. It’s very thick and a bit dry and doesn’t look or feel its best straight after washing.

mollyblack · 18/08/2018 16:42

I'm the same, I've tried all the things suggested above but still only get one decent day out of my hair. What helps a bit is putting dry shampoo on as soon as I've blow dried it, then before I go to bed at night, but still the second day is not great, I couldn't go to a meeting or socialise without feeling self conscious.

I find the superdrug killer volume dry shampoo to be better than batiste.

I've done co washing, natural shampoo, leaving 2-3 days for months to "train my hair"(that was awful), using vinegar, all the things the internet has suggested and nothing has worked. People who have stretched it out to 2 or 3 days don't have the kind of hair we are talking about!

JassyRadlett · 18/08/2018 16:44

I always assume people who say this don’t have thick unruly hair that takes 45 minute to blow dry to look halfway decent.

KnoxValentine · 18/08/2018 16:48

I have a lot of hair and it takes a long time to dry and style. I have an autistic child who can't be left alone which is the reason I would like to have to cut down on the washing. It's too time consuming for day to day life. I used an elvive specifically for greasy hair shampoo for a while but they've stopped selling it. It was better with that although not perfect I could cope with the level of grease on day 2. What is co washing?

I've recently started doing this op and started with every two days for a few weeks then add a day if the state of my hair has improved. Also bought some decent shampoo and conditioner so hopefully that will make a difference in time.

My hairdresser told me to use dry shampoo at night before bed, which I probably won't do as can't stand the stuff. Talcum powder might work.

cloudyweewee · 18/08/2018 16:53

How long have you been washing every other day? I used to wash my hair every day as it was so greasy by day 2, but then I decdied I would just wash it every other day. At first, it was hard to put with the state of my hair on day 2, but after a few weeks, my hair was no longer a wreck on the days I didn't wash it and is now fine.

KnoxValentine · 18/08/2018 16:54

Yes Mollyblack. Mine is ever so slightly better if I dry shampoo it straight after a wash. The other thing that used to help was when I used to go out at night all the time it would have a hairspray grease barrier but not really suitable for day to day

I've been washing every other day for months. No improvement over time which is what I expected to happen. It's so frustrating

hidinginthenightgarden · 18/08/2018 16:57

I don't wash mine every day as it is very thick and takes too long to dry. I think its fine.

Clionba · 18/08/2018 16:57

I was the same. I wash it every day with a Dr Organics shampoo from H&B, sulphate, parabens and sls free etc. My hair is glossy and healthy. Smells fresh, too!

Katescurios · 18/08/2018 17:00

I went through a few weeks of greasy hair several years ago when i was using crazy colours because washing every day was killing the colour. Im now able to just wash it twice a week and it looks good.

For me it took 2-3 weeks of only doing twice weekly washing before the greasy every day look went away.

I now use the really cheap tealidl shampoo as everything else seems really heavy and full of stuff. I also condition first, then shampoo, if ido it the other way round my hair is very flat.

I have lots of fine hair though so anything too weighty immediately makes my hair looks flat and greasy

SlothSlothSloth · 18/08/2018 17:02

You sound like you have extremely fine hair like me. People who say leave it to train itself DEFINITELY do not have this kind of hair! Trust me it doesn’t work. My hair gets greasy within 6 hours. “Training” it has been absolutely fruitless.

I recently had my hair bleached for the first time and that has actually helped with the grease. Of course, my hair is now quite damaged. Sigh.

I use a lot of dry shampoo. The volumising batiste is more effective than the one in the green bottle, but it gives a sort of weird clumpy texture to the hair.

Let us know if you come up with a miracle cure!

Petalflowers · 18/08/2018 17:02

I don’t wash it everyday. I’m an every other day-er, and have been known to let it go to three days days. I have thick hair, prone to greasy Ed’s also.

Has any noticed how difficult it is to get a decent shampoo for greasy hair nowadays. In the past, there were only three hair types - dry, greasy and normal. Actuall, also dandruff. Now you have shampoos for long hair, short, curly, voluminising, moisturising, shiney, etc.

MouseholeCat · 18/08/2018 17:02

YANBU in the slightest.

I have fine blonde hair which gets greasy quickly but wash it every 2-3 days as I get scalp eczema and also I cba with drying it every fecking day.

I find if I blow dry it well on day 1 it'll keep more volume. Day 2 I use dry shampoo and it's passable. For day 3 I've learned a bunch of easy hairstyles which only really hold if my hair is greasy. Or I just wear a baseball cap.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 18/08/2018 17:02

I was mine twice a week, I shower the rest of the time to wash my body. My hairdresser says this is actually better with me having coloured hair, means the colour lasts so much longer and my
Hair is very shiny and manageable
