AIBU to not want to wash my hair every day?

I have extremely oily skin and my hair gets greasy quickly, by bed time it’ll be greasy. I’ve tried loads of shampoos I’ve tried going days without washing for my hair to get used to it and change but it’s hideous. I currently wash it every other day, and it’s too greasy to wear down on day 2. Dry shampoo doesn’t really make it any better. I want to be able to wash my hair at least every other day and not look like I’ve washed it with olive oil. Do you guys have any shampoo suggestions.

It is true that the more you wash hair, the more you have to wash it.
Just tie it up for a week and see if it helps, or cut it short, much easier to manage.
Looked up cowash at lush, use conditioner to wash, they make a shampoo with majority conditioner but reccomend for dry hair

nicebitofquiche · 18/08/2018 17:03

I should wash mine everyday but I don't. I just grew it long enough to tie it up in a pony tail every other day. I use dry shampoo in my fringe.

theSnuffster · 18/08/2018 17:03

I have really thick hair and also have to wash every day. I tend to wash it in the evening so it dries over night then just needs straightening in the morning. Blow drying takes ages!

I'd love to be able to wash it once a week!

mollyblack · 18/08/2018 17:05

Also to people who suggest training it by leaving it 2-3 days etc. What about the times you HAVE to wash it every day (for example if you swim or gym or run etc or have two important public facing things) then you ruin the run and are back to square one presumably?

I use this one, thanks to my sister who recommended it to me.

Loonoon · 18/08/2018 17:07

I wash every 4/5 days depending how well my blow dry holds up. I would not have time to wash it every day because it is thick and takes ages to blow dry. I once tried not blow drying to see how long it would take to air dry - after 5 and half hours I gave up and finished it off with the dryer.

LanaorAna2 · 18/08/2018 17:08

Washing hair daily is a disaster for the colour - it fades fast, and the rest of the hair shaft gets dry and cracks.

Unless you're working down a coal mine, there's no need to scrub yourself senseless with detergents every day. It's not good for you.

Now waiting for the MNetter who washes her hair three times daily and squeezes in a shower in the middle of the night too.

Anxious2niteaaah · 18/08/2018 17:09

Put dry shampoo on your hair (make lots of partings and spray into the roots/scalp) then when your scalp pumps out the oil it will go straight into the dry shampoo and be absorbed leaving your hair lengths grease free

Also I had a couple of hair dressers tell me to dry up greasy hair you can get highlights, bleach dries hair, so when the oil runs down the hair strand it will run into drier hair and be absorbed leaving the hair grease free longer (I had highlights added because like you my hair gets greasy too, and between the highlights and putting the dry shampoo onto clean hair it has got it under control)

BibiThree · 18/08/2018 17:12

I have the exact same problem. While on a years maternity leave, I did the "train your hair" thing, sometimes going 3 days between washes. Absolutely no difference by the time I went back to work, and I'd spent 2/3 of a year with oil slick hair.
The only thing that has helped a little was when I was blonde. Bleaching had its benefits but my hair is so fine, it was snapping off it was so brittle.

Lovetocycle · 18/08/2018 17:15

Mines the same. Just given up and wash it most days now. If I really can't, I use talc powder which is fine if I'm just putting it a pony tail.

Danglingmod · 18/08/2018 17:16

The OP doesn't say she has colour on her hair... not everyone does?! Confused

I can't leave my hair without being washed every day. It used to be every three days as a kid, then every two as a young adult, now it needs to be washed every day. The only time I could occasionally get away with leaving it was when I had a fringe. On the second day, I could maybe put my hair in a bun or ponytail and quickly wash the fringe in the sink.

caterpuller · 18/08/2018 17:17

I wash mine once a week or a bit longer. I used to wash every other day and wear it up on day 2. Since I moved to longer in between washes it has definitely improved in condition and doesn't get so greasy. In fact it doesn't get greasy at all but I don't like leaving it longer than about a week. I use Oribe shampoo or Aveda. I can justify using expensive stuff as I wash it so much less often than before. In between I use Oribe dry shampoo once or twice. I never blow dry other than at the hair dressers every 3 months.

caterpuller · 18/08/2018 17:21

I don't think leaving it for 2 to 3 days to train it is enough. It wasn't until I started leaving it for up to 7 days that I noticed an improvement.

RoadToRivendell · 18/08/2018 17:23

I hardly ever wash my hair, like once every 5 or 6 days. It is absolutely disgusting but it looks pretty good on it, and my hair is now longer than I've ever managed to get it.

Strawberrymelon · 18/08/2018 17:39

I am the same as you op. I have an autistic son and I feel I take too long everyday washing and drying my hair. Occasionally I don't wash it but it feels horrible. It has been slightly better since I have been using aveeno shampoo.

I forgot to add to my post above, to spray the dry shampoo on CLEAN hair, spray it on the same day you wash it

iheartmyponeh · 18/08/2018 18:06

I used to have to wash every day. My roots went proper 'chip grease' yuck and if I didn't wash it, I'd have an itchy scalp.

I switched to Pureology shampoo and conditioner which I thought was mega spendy but now I wash once a week, and I only use a tiny bit, so a massive bottle lasts about 6-8 months.

iheartmyponeh · 18/08/2018 18:08

Forgot to add, I tried all sorts of 'greasy hair' shampoos etc beforehand, none worked inlcuding that l'oreal clay one.

TittyGolightly · 18/08/2018 18:08

I use Pureology if I’m wearing my hair straight. Or Boucleme if leaving it curly. Both operate on a “less is more” basis.

Mari50 · 18/08/2018 19:03

All the advice about training hair may work for some people but genuinely, it would never work for me.
My hair gets lank after about 18 hours, I couldn’t leave it unwashed for 24 hours when I have work and after 48 it would be stuck to my head and dark with grease.
I know training wouldn’t work because I took roaccutane and only had to wash my hair once a week and that was because it was getting a bit dirty. When I stopped taking roaccutane I tried my hardest to keep the washing to a minimal and it was impossible as my hair got increasingly greasy despite my less is more attitude to hair washing.
I’ve tried paraben free/silicone free etc etc nothing works.... ever.

itcuddles · 18/08/2018 19:05

Start using sulfate free shampoos, sulfate strips your hair of its natural oils causing it to over compensate and get greasier much quicker. Initially your hair will be rank, but after a couple of weeks you'll notice a huge difference and should be able to go 4-5 days between washes.

Butterflycookie · 18/08/2018 19:21

You need to add some tea tree oil to your shampoo or get a shampoo that has tea tree oil in it. My hair is really greasy but I won’t wash it every day or other day. It’s really damaging to your hair. If you’re at home and not going out then try to leave it as long as possible.
When you are washing your hair, do you wash it more than once? If so don’t do that it will strip your hair. I use this shampoo www.wilko.com/en-uk/tresemme-deep-cleansing-shampoo-900ml/p/0219438?nst=0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwrmKvJr33AIVLLftCh3IPQBLEAQYASABEgL2xvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds.

It’s so cheap around £3 for 900ml.
You also need to oil your hair. You must be thinking that’s ridiculous seeing as you want to get rid of greasy hair. But it really works. You need to put some hair oil such as jojoba oil/olive/coconut oil, whichever you prefer. Massage it in your scalp, leave overnight and wash out the next day. It will also thicken your hair, do this once a week. Over washing/scrubbing your hair can make the problem worse.

bodiddly · 18/08/2018 19:35

Mine gets greasy at night - I was my hair in the evening, it's fine the next day but if I were to try and get another day out of it then overnight on the second night it gets really greasy. No idea what all that is about!

loubeylou68smellsofreindeerpoo · 18/08/2018 20:30

Try using salt spray , it's good for fine hair and keeps the grease at bay (not recommend before straightening though)

loubeylou68smellsofreindeerpoo · 18/08/2018 20:33

Other thing is to avoid shampoos with silicon like Pantene organics fructus vo5 elvive ultimate blends
