I haven't really shared this with anyone in RL yet, because I get a bit embarrassed about this sort of thing. But, under the cloak of anonymity, I'm going to have a bit of a boast.

I got a grade B in A level Classical Civilisation today - and I was just one mark off a grade A overall, with 94/100 in one of the papers.

This was just a 'hobby' and I've really loved the subject matter. I'm flippin' chuffed.

There. As you were.

Many congratulations! I loved my Classical Civilisations A-level too, and remember so much of it even now. Ancient Greek Art and Architecture was my favourite too, and I went on the study Archaeology and Art History at university.

Recently I've been loving getting back into the classics - might I recommend checking out Emily Wilson's new translation of the Odyssey? She's the first woman to translate it into English and I find her Twitter fascinating too. I'm now reading Circe, Madeleine Miller's new novel, and it's excellent.

Just to keep your hand in, like.

Really thrilled for you, and good on you for going for an A-level.

Well done! Celebrations are in order Grin Flowers

llangennith · 16/08/2018 17:20

Congratulations! That's brilliant!
So much harder to study when you've other commitments Thanks

PinkLady01 · 16/08/2018 17:24

I got a B in classical civilisation a couple of years ago - it was actually my highest mark and favourite subject! So yes you should be proud and telling everyone! Grin

I went to a grammar school where a B wasn’t a good mark so I couldn’t boast at all

BitOutOfPractice · 16/08/2018 17:25

Yanbu because that is great! Well done! Star

Congratulations WineCake

LadyCarlotta - thanks for the tips! I've already clocked Emily Wilson's translation after reading about it in the Guardian, I think. I'm definitely going to explore that. I'm going to dip into Aristophanes' comedies and, after studying Virgil, I want to find out more about the Roman Empire. I work in a university, so the library will prove very useful!

mamahanji - I studied through the National Extension College. It's a bit more expensive than some of the other providers, but absolutely excellent in my opinion. The materials were clear and the assessments were good prep for the exams. The only thing was that the online discussion forums weren't particularly well used which was a shame, so it all felt a bit lonely at times. I highly recommend the NEC though - I've also got my eye on its Latin course, so I might well go back!

LadyCarlotta - I meant to say too: I also follow Emily Wilson on Twitter. She's so interesting!

Congratulations @SallyOMalley !!

@Harrykanesrightsock I had no idea you could apply for OU with same funding rules as 'normal' route... I'm off for a google!

TerfsUp · 16/08/2018 17:32

I saw this article in Buzzfeed today so immediately thought of it when I read this thread.

Well done OP!! Definitely open the bubbly! 🍾

I've just committed to doing English lit A level- I wanted to do it over 30 years ago but my parents wouldn't let me. I'm excited but nervous about starting.

bridgetreilly · 16/08/2018 17:35

Sign up for an OU module?

winterdeballesteros · 16/08/2018 17:35

I quite fancy this. Did a bit of classics as an extra module at uni and really enjoyed it. Got a pensions exam to get through first though 😔

Do you think it would be doable to start it on maternity leave or would that be ridiculous?

kaldefotter · 16/08/2018 17:37

Congratulations, that’s wonderful!

mummyhaschangedhername · 16/08/2018 17:37

Look at the open University. They have a range of options at different costs.

LuluJakey1 · 16/08/2018 17:40

Fantastic. Well done you! ⭐️💫🌟✨

SallyOMalley · 16/08/2018 17:41

Elfride - Oooh - exciting! Good luck with it. It's all so different now with so many resources online as well as the materials you get from the college or distance learning provider.

I used websites like StudentRoom and GetRevising an awful lot - so useful when I had no one else to throw ideas around with, and great for sharing learning materials There are also some American sites that I found very useful for the literature - LitCharts was very useful. Oh and clever googling brings up resources on school and college websites - always useful to get a second opinion!

Oh my. I'm going to miss all this (not sure my family feels the same!)

Here's a tip on using google that you might find useful, OP: if you want to access only academic sources, put .ac.uk at the end of your search.

For example, Odysseus turns up 10,800,000 results. Odysseus.ac.uk turns up 1,050,000.

Don't forget Scholar.google.co.uk.

And MOOCs! I don't know of any specific MOOCs related to the classics, but you here are some suggestions:

and

SallyOMalley · 16/08/2018 17:57

Thanks terfsup! Yes, I've been looking at some of the MOOCS - I think that'll be my next port of call. (I can see it getting a bit addictive!)

Well done!

SelinaMyers · 16/08/2018 18:05

Congratulations- I done a classics A-Level 10 years ago and still think about it regularly. Congratulations indeed- can’t imagine the level of self motivation that goes into distance learning.

DrPeppersPhD · 16/08/2018 18:15

Congratulations OP! I've just got my grades for that as well, it was a really tough exam this year, you should be rightly proud of yourself!

SallyOMalley · 16/08/2018 18:18

Congratulations to you too, DrPeppers! What are you going on to do?
