To think hot tubs in back gardens are a bit shit and anti social?

I'm sure they're nice and realxing and perfectly acceptable if you live a house with a huge garden and no close neighbours nearby, but my neighbours have just bought one. We live in a row of terraces, with small gardens and are overlooked from every direction. It's slap bag in the middle of the back yard and I can actually see them sitting in it if I go upstairs.

All weekend Ive heard the constant hum from the pumps and the stench of chlorine filling the air. Now they're sitting in, shouting like they're deaf because they can't hear themselves talking over the pump.

If I'm honest I also find them a bit tacky. I can't think of anything worse. Just have a sodding bath! DB's next door neighbours have and he's been moaning about it for ages, thought he was being a killjoy until one was installed here! Now I get it.

Very low class, the ultimate accessory alongside a trampoline and a Ford Capri with furry dice.

GlitterNails · 18/08/2018 08:02

I love mine. I don’t have a bath just a shower, and have serene chronic pain and it’s great for some relief. I don’t put the bubbles on as they are noisy and top up the chemicals regularly.

RainySeptember · 18/08/2018 08:08

"Very low class,"

Unless it's looking out over the ocean from the rolling grounds of your chateau, perfectly maintained by the staff. It's really only poor people who aren't allowed to have them.

KERALA1 · 18/08/2018 08:16

I have been accused of being "posh" my entire life so pleased buying a hot tub enables me to entirely switch social class makes life more interesting - perhaps I shall purchase the sun to read in my hot tub today instead of the guardian and it will be chips instead of gazpacho for lunch and we will cancel tonight's theatre booking and go to bingo Grin

ApplesinmyPocket · 18/08/2018 08:43

Chavvy, common, tacky, low-class - who decides these things? Confused They don't seem to think it's low-class to have a hot-tub in our local very high-class hotel!

I'd love a hot tub because it would remind me happily of holidays in villas with pools - the hot water compensating for the usually cool British weather! But I can see they'd be a bit of a faff and probably a 5-minute wonder - some near-neighbours had one on their deck and it disappeared after only a few months.

chillpizza · 18/08/2018 09:08

Hot tubs are a class thing then? Bit odd considering a lot of the upper have them and apparently the low class so that just leaves the middle who must hate them. Is it some sort of I'm posher than you but not posh enough to have somewhere I believe hot tubs do belong issue.

MrsChollySawcutt · 18/08/2018 09:15

This thread is such bollocks.

We bought a hot tub this year and have it in the back garden. We aren't overlooked but have put a gazebo over it anyway to provide shade.

It's been a lovely to cool off in the evenings during the heatwave. The DC (15 and 11) have really enjoyed having it. An unexpected bonus has been that it's become a great place for quiet family time and long chats about life the universe and everything.

Sorry to disappoint but it's definitely not a sordid sex pond.

trinitybleu · 18/08/2018 10:21

We have one and it's amazing. Proper hard shell for up to 8 people but never had more than 4 people in it, no noise when just ticking over (it did when we first got it but the guys came out and replaced the pump), OH keeps it super clean and replaces the water every 3 months or less, no sex, not overlooked at all.

£10 a month in electricity, less than that on chemicals.

It is on a deck though Grin

BigBlueBubble · 18/08/2018 10:34

Hot tubs are fine when used by people who behave decently and respect their neighbours. The problem arises when people are shrieking, shouting, having sex in full view and blasting music while they “enjoy” their garden, thus preventing everyone else from enjoying theirs.

BigBlueBubble · 18/08/2018 10:37

Also the reason why it’s ok “looking out over the ocean from the rolling grounds of your chateau” is because you aren’t disturbing anyone. It’s completely different in the back garden of a terraced house where the buzzing, bubbling and chatting noise prevents other people’s kids from sleeping.

Bluebell878275 · 18/08/2018 10:38

MrsChollySawcutt
Exactly the same here, I've spent many an enjoyable evening with my husband and teenage SD. We've had conversations which would probably never have happened if we were inside watching telly or on our phones. Just to sit and be together without distractions, have a laugh and enjoy the stars/sun. It's so far from 'chavvy' and 'tacky'...I can't believe how stuck-up some of these posters are.

Bluebell878275 · 18/08/2018 10:40

BigBlueBubble Also agree with that.. it's about being aware and respectful of your surroundings.

KERALA1 · 18/08/2018 17:44

Well exactly Bluebell. Spent most of the afternoon in ours. Silently!

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 18/08/2018 17:57

I’d love one but can’t be bothered with all the faff of cleaning and chemicals which goes with them.

I adore them on a holiday though but someone else cleans those out.

Maddy70 · 18/08/2018 18:01

I also find them a bit weird and tacky. I have a whirlpool bath that I can lounge in in the privacy of my own bathroom. Why would I want to parade outside?
Each to their own but I'm not a fan

RainySeptember · 18/08/2018 18:17

"Hot tubs are fine when used by people who behave decently and respect their neighbours."

Well you could say that about anything couldn't you? Trampolines, barbecues, croquet sets. Antisocial noisy people who disrespect their neighbours will always find a way to do so, I don't think it's necessarily the hot tub that brings out the worst in them.

RainySeptember · 18/08/2018 18:19

"where the buzzing, bubbling and chatting noise prevents other people’s kids from sleeping."

People are allowed to chat in their gardens, with or without a hot tub. If the sound of chatting keeps your kids awake you need to get yourself a property without neighbours imo.

swimlyn · 18/08/2018 19:30

Yeah – we’ve had "f*ck you" neighbours too.

Ten minutes is the recommended maximum time to spend in a hot tub (at 37deg to 40deg C) less if you are pregnant.

Oysterbabe
My friend has one that he likes to entice ladies back to. We call it the gene pool

Grin Grin Grin

The cheap spas ARE noisy, and chavs usually don’t spend a lot on their jollies. That’s your first clue.

Yeah, our ex NDNs loved a hot tug too, but not the sort mentioned in page 3 above…

Current NDNs - luckily no tubs yet. Previous place - bloody awful. Adult sex parties with no care for the very close neighbours/kids. Unsupervised teen kids using it (and each other - gross) at least the boys got out to piss against our fence. Yes, OUR fence. Many happy years there - the last few were hell on Earth because of this.

I am however, quite prepared to accept that the polite and hygienic use that others have described here exists – we’ve just never experienced it personally. So, are we judgey/hysterical? Well, if you love the smell of rancid piss and chloramines on a lovely fresh Monday morning, yay, suggest the NDNs get one immediately!

Secre
Eeeeew. You do realise that chlorine is odourless.
The 'chlorine' smell is created by chloramines, which only build up when the pool water is improperly treated. Chloramines result from the combination of two ingredients: (a) chlorine disinfectants and (b) perspiration, oils and urine. Your neighbours are likely pissing in their hot tub!!! Gross.

Not 100% true – using dichloro granules at the correct strength will give a faint bleachy smell. The requirements for a spa tub though, are significantly higher than a swimming pool because of the warm water. and the behaviour If it doesn’t smell a bit like a naice floor cleaning liquid when you get in, don’t linger. I’d never use one unless there’s a cool, properly maintained swimming pool adjacent.

MrsChollySawcutt
…It's been a lovely to cool off in the evenings during the heatwave.

You’re not running a hot tub correctly if you can ‘cool off’ in it.

As for people who claim ‘they’ don’t urinate in it - dream on, you have no idea about the person next to you…

MrsChollySawcutt · 18/08/2018 19:49

Swimlyn where we are, some days were 34 degrees during the heatwave. I can assure you that a hot tub heated to 36-38 degrees feels refreshing and cool during such weather.

But thanks for the crap and incorrect advice.

swimlyn · 18/08/2018 21:07

Your need to put an insult in your post makes you look juvenile and insecure. Play the ball, not the player.

As I said, you’re not running a hot tub correctly if you can ‘cool off’ in it. Body temp = 37deg C.

I hope your knowledge of chemistry is better than your knowledge of physics...

MaisyPops · 18/08/2018 21:14

sex ponds Grin How have I missed that expression?!

Though seriously, they're not my cup of tea but I think I'd make a distinction between a properly fitted one with quiet pump and neighbours who are reasonably quiet, and these horrible blow up instant hot tubs that seem to have been selling like hot cakes over the summer with loud pumps and even louder conversation.

The former could be quite relaxing. The latter seems quite sex pondy

MrsChollySawcutt · 18/08/2018 21:21

Swinlyn

I will leave juvenile insults to you (although you aren't very good at them). I will explain it simply...

normal core temperature of the human body is around 37°C, and skin temperature can be a few degrees cooler than that, so when you immerse your body into hotter water or air, heat is transferred to it. ... Hence, water doesn't feel as hot as dry air at the same temperature.

OK?

honeysucklejasmine · 18/08/2018 21:31

I absolutely agree that 37°C water feels miles cooler than 37°C air.

ShumpaLumpa · 18/08/2018 21:55

Mrjoepike what made you pick that one as opposed to all the other ones listed on this site: hottubsandportablespas.blogspot.com/

Busted 😂

Bluebell878275 · 18/08/2018 22:01

MrsChollySawcutt Again, totally agree. Although it's a 'hot' tub..it does feel like a cool down after a hot day.
