To think hot tubs in back gardens are a bit shit and anti social?

I'm sure they're nice and realxing and perfectly acceptable if you live a house with a huge garden and no close neighbours nearby, but my neighbours have just bought one. We live in a row of terraces, with small gardens and are overlooked from every direction. It's slap bag in the middle of the back yard and I can actually see them sitting in it if I go upstairs.

All weekend Ive heard the constant hum from the pumps and the stench of chlorine filling the air. Now they're sitting in, shouting like they're deaf because they can't hear themselves talking over the pump.

If I'm honest I also find them a bit tacky. I can't think of anything worse. Just have a sodding bath! DB's next door neighbours have and he's been moaning about it for ages, thought he was being a killjoy until one was installed here! Now I get it.

My 13 year old dd went to a hot tub party and came out in a rash all over her face a few days later. All the other girls were the same. We have just stayed at a luxury cottage for a few days and really enjoyed the hot tub there but don't think I could be bothered with maintaining one at home.

saniner · 15/08/2018 23:01

Yes I agree they are disgusting. I think people buy them without actually thinking how shit they are.

ALittleAubergine · 15/08/2018 23:02

I like the idea of it rather than the reality.

ThereRNoMirrorsInTheSerengeti · 15/08/2018 23:03

I don’t have much to add except that the smell of chlorine is sign of dirty water. The stronger the smell of chlorine, the dirtier the water and the dirtier your neighbours Wink

NotUmbongoUnchained · 15/08/2018 23:03

I’ve had sex in a hot tub but it was too steamy Grin

Moussemoose · 15/08/2018 23:04

People wee in them. Even if they don't mean to wee, wee slips out.

It's hot, bubbly, wee.

A wee pond.

TheDairyQueen · 15/08/2018 23:07

I can't think of anything worse.

The icy wind and rain pishing down from the North Sea isn't exactly conducive to a state of relaxation, nor is the prospect of my neighbours seeing all the bits of my body that used to be on my chest but inch closer to my knees with each passing year.

You know it's the height of tack when you see them on anything on Channel 4, 5 or ITV fucking 2.

apriljune12 · 15/08/2018 23:21

Utterly agree op our neighbours have one and it’s ok we all have big gardens but he’s a knob.

It’s a Chav equivalent of a Swimming pool :)

CherryPavlova · 15/08/2018 23:56

We definitely don’t urinate in ours.
Not all bacteria like 38 degrees some thrive in colder conditions and some in much hotter conditions.

Legionella is usually found where water outlets have not been run off regularly and water has stagnated in taps and shower heads. If a tub is used regularly then there isn’t stagnation - ours has an auto cycle that moves water around through the filtration system frequently. I’m sure most do.
A public hot tub is very different to a private one although in Iceland there is a huge communal hot tub culture....and they are one of the healthiest nations.
The pH is what limits bacterial growth mainly and it does need monitoring but it’s not onerous.

You can get INFLATABLE ones FROM ALDI

horror and shock all round

Rough as a badgers arse some might say

I quite fancy one

Jeanclaudejackety · 16/08/2018 00:06

Are they allowed if they're in a big garden in a Middle class area and your kids are called Xanthe and Benedict and you dress them only in hand knitted jumpers and Boden wellies? If you have Jayden and Lacee Mae and you live in Blackpool in a terrace, is that when it's bad? 😂

IAmInsignificunt · 16/08/2018 00:15

Our neighbors have one which is on 24/7. The constant humming noise from it gives me terrible headaches and makes me feel queasy.

IAmInsignificunt · 16/08/2018 00:19

hot tug
Snigger

SusanneLinder · 16/08/2018 00:20

I'd like one. They would be great for my back and DH's aches and pains.
It won't happen though, couldn't be arsed with the maintenance.

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 16/08/2018 00:20

I saw some in b&q that had inbuilt sound systems (and tacky flashing lights). Bugger being the neighbour to one of those! They were the guts of £10k too. Mind boggles. I know a couple of people who have them and as Alan Partridge would say, they're sex people Grin.

We love ours. I had major spinal surgery a few years ago and it's great for my dodgy, weak and painful spine and associated sciatica. It's sunk into the decking, it's quiet, it's not full of bacteria as we monitor it, it doesn't stink of chlorine as we use bromine, it's deep cleaned regularly as well. It's sunk into the decking, we've a large garden and we're not overlooked so no-one can see it. Its a great way to soothe my back after a long day, reading a book and having a G&T. Even if I hadn't had the surgery, I would have got one. I'm surprised at all the judgemental comments showing snobbery and the class system is alive and flourishing here. All very U and non U. As a farmers daughter,

robynadair · 16/08/2018 00:46

Posted too soon - was going to say , that as a farmers daughter, who has an ancient muddy 4x4 to help out, I have a view about those who drive pristine white 4x4s , but hey, live and let live so I keep it to myself. Why so judgey?

teethyteethteeth · 16/08/2018 01:09

My SIL had one installed (ordinary extended semi detached in the suburbs) and sometimes goes in with her DH to be sexy. They also have frequent 'family tub time' which includes mum and dad, two older teenagers, one mid-teen, a pre-teen and a toddler (who has been allowed in there since she was six months for some reason).

HerRoyalNotness · 16/08/2018 01:33

mrjoepike now THAT is the business! What a dream!

The kids would love one. A lot of pools over here have a hot tub to the side of the pool, ours does not. If I was in the country, a snowy olace, along the river or a lake, i’d Get one tomorrow

HicDraconis · 16/08/2018 01:35

Love ours and couldn’t give a rats what other people think. That said most people have either a hot tub, pool or both in the garden here. We are in a large detached house with garden, tub screened from nearest neighbour by hedge and maintained regularly.

It’s fab for relaxing in after training when I’m aching top to bottom, it’s great for DH’s arthritis (bloody hell I sound middle aged!) but mostly it’s amazing for relaxing in with the children. No screens, games or other distractions and they talk about life, stuff, what’s going well, what’s not going so well - really keeps connections open with teenagers. Plus they and their friends are never out of it over the spring / summer. We’re thinking of getting a pool for the lawn :)

Jeanclaudejackety · 16/08/2018 01:41

You know what I'd really like, a sauna in the back garden OMG

footphobic · 16/08/2018 01:48

Our old neighbours had an inflatable one. The houses were close together and over looked each other so very little privacy.

They mostly liked to use it late at night, when they’d had a few and had marital ‘issues’ to discuss.

It made for some interesting evenings.

CherryPavlova · 16/08/2018 08:00

IAmInsignificunt - google hot tugs. Amazing things.

Moussemoose · 16/08/2018 08:43

Now a 'hot tug' I might enjoy...Wink

RespoDad · 16/08/2018 08:48
