What does 'wear slippers in the house' mean to you?

I've had the carpets professionally cleaned and bought everyone new slippers so they don't get dirty as quickly.

Would you think that means.

  1. walk into porch, change into slippers and go into house
  2. walk through porch, into house, into living room and put slippers on sitting on settee

There's a disagreement in my house atm

You need a shoe rack, then you can instigate a "no shoes past this point" rule.

HelpmeobiMN · 14/08/2018 13:08

Obviously 1 (as you no doubt think as well!)

FevertreeLight · 14/08/2018 13:09

The great class divide. Is it you an DH who disagree?

BurpeesAreTheWorkOfTheDevil · 14/08/2018 13:09

We have a shoe rack, in the porch

1 although I'd change my shoes inside, not in a porch.

blueskiesandforests · 14/08/2018 13:10

Obviously number 1, but do you really insist on slippers (rather than just socks if preferred)? I spent a while wearing slippers a lot a few years ago and developed a serious and painful case of plantar fascitis which made my life horrible for almost a year. I know some adults have yucky bare feet but socks are fine.

Pinkvoid · 14/08/2018 13:11

This is similar to one of the first ever threads I read on MN years ago and was therefore my introduction to this madness Grin.

I’ve honestly never heard of house slippers for guests, people either remove shoes or they don’t in my world.

My answer would be one, though.

SendintheArdwolves · 14/08/2018 13:12

Depends - were the slippers in the porch or the living room?

Hillarious · 14/08/2018 13:13

Wherever the slippers are, I'd take off my shoes in the porch.

BurpeesAreTheWorkOfTheDevil · 14/08/2018 13:13

Slippers should be in the porch, where they should be taken off to put shoes on to go out.

It doesn't have to be slippers, just not shoes

Take shoes off in porch, walk through house in stockinged feet looking for slippers. Find slippers under bed.

Ghanagirl · 14/08/2018 13:16

@BurpeesAreTheWorkOfTheDevil
No. 1 of course but my DH frequently does the latter then kids often follow his exampleSad

SoyDora · 14/08/2018 13:16

I’d take my shoes off in the porch but hate wearing slippers, especially in the summer.

Strugglingtodomybest · 14/08/2018 13:16

I would think it means you're too precious over carpets Wink but I know the real answer is 1.

BurpeesAreTheWorkOfTheDevil · 14/08/2018 13:17

@Ghanagirl

Dog muck on the carpet today because they followed daddy Angry

I was brought up wearing shoes in the house, but my parents house is one where you wouldn't want to walk barefoot or sit on the floor because people walked on it with street shoes, and there were too many animals. Which is unpleasant looking back as in the evenings my father lay on the entire sofa with the cats, my mother owned one arm chair and the fucking dog the other, multiple children sat on the floor, and only ever on the floor.

I've now moved to a country where if you suggest to a visiting child that they can keep their shoes on they will gasp "street shoes! Shock " in horror, and look as though you've just told them it's a nudist house - I never suggest keeping shoes on even if the floor is due a wash any more, it's not welcomed! We all go barefoot in our own home, only DH has Birkenstock sandals as slippers.

9amTrain · 14/08/2018 13:18

1 obviously. How could it be 2?!

YeTalkShiteHen · 14/08/2018 13:18

1, it can’t be anything else?

wafflyversatile · 14/08/2018 13:19

Do you have somewhere in the porch for them to sit down to change?

Lethaldrizzle · 14/08/2018 13:19

I would think it's a house I have to be careful about spilling anything or making a mess

Stephisaur · 14/08/2018 13:20

1 I guess.

Our carpets don't start until the lounge, so for me it's kick shoes off in the hall and then go barefoot!

TeeBee · 14/08/2018 13:21
My children are hardwired to remove theirs at the door. Now they are teenagers with big feet and lots of big friends, it means I can barely get through the front door at times :-D
SnowyAlps · 14/08/2018 13:21

We always take off shoes in the porch and have no shoes in the house. Never really thought about it. I always take my shoes off when I go to peoples homes too, I would think it rude to walk in with my shoes on.🤷🏻‍♀️
