Mine would be fish and chips (really good ones with perfectly crisp batter, salt and vinegar chips and a beautiful coastal view to enjoy them by)

Chips, mushy peas and gravy !!!!

spidey66 · 14/08/2018 13:46

Chippy tea or a roast dinner.

SingaSong12 · 14/08/2018 13:47

Fish and chips or Cumberland sausage and mash.

Pudding- apple crumble

TheQueef · 14/08/2018 13:50

For me it'd be giant toad in the hole, good sausages, bubble and squeak with bacon and mushroom gravy.

Monday leftovers.

Fresta · 14/08/2018 13:51

Shepherds pie. It's our version of Mousaka or lasagne.

Pinkvoid · 14/08/2018 13:52

Sunday dinner

Ohyesiam · 14/08/2018 13:53

@illhavealargeglassofred I stand corrected!
Even more my fave now as I love Glasgow .

LemonysSnicket · 14/08/2018 13:57

Hmm ... roast dinner in a giant Yorkshire, or a steak pie, or a ploughman's or tikka masala, or corned beef hash

LemonysSnicket · 14/08/2018 14:00

Oooh or coronation chicken

LemonysSnicket · 14/08/2018 14:00

Or jacket with cheese and beans

LemonysSnicket · 14/08/2018 14:03

Shepherds pie is the one thing that as an adult I will never ever eat again- vile

TheQueef · 14/08/2018 14:03

For pudding it'd be rhubarb crumble with nuts and double cream.

LighthouseSouth · 14/08/2018 14:05

on the subject of jacket potato - yes to cheese, no to beans.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 14/08/2018 14:06

" jacket with cheese and beans" Grin

honestly if that the 'best' of British cuisine, it is no wonder that other nationalities laugh at us and our food.

NewGrandad · 14/08/2018 14:14

Scottish breakfast should include haggis.

LemonysSnicket · 14/08/2018 14:20

@FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast it's not the best I just really do love a jacket with cheese and beans. I couldn't pick and got carried away thinking about all the food I want right now 😂

LiveLifeWithPassion · 14/08/2018 14:22

Roast dinner or chicken pie

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 14/08/2018 14:23

...oh well.. fair enough..Grin

Want2bSupermum · 14/08/2018 14:52

Forgot my fav roast which is leg of lamb in season. It's amazing. Nothing like it anywhere else in the world.

jacket with cheese and beans

See I don't get that attitude at all. A lovely fluffy jacket spud, crispy skin, knob of butter, baked beans with some delicious melted cheddar on top. What's laughable about that?

How is that any worse of dough rolled out with some pureed tomato and cheese on top (Italian pizza), or a baked boxed cheese with some dry crusty bread (French snack) and so on. My brother lives in Germany and one of his favourite lunches is fried potatoes and bacon, (Bratkartoffeln) which is a common staple over there.

All cuisines have their basics - not every French or Italian person is conjuring up complex meals for lunch etc.

As things go there's not much wrong with a tasty jacket spud with a nice topping. Maybe not 'Britain's Best Dish' but perfectly acceptable nonetheless and certainly not 'laughable' surely?

MorningsEleven · 14/08/2018 15:31

I once taught a Sicilian man to make a baked potato. He'd eaten one (and he cooked like a charm, so in no way clueless) but couldn't fathom the simple idea of flinging a spud in the oven.

THEsonofaBITCH · 14/08/2018 15:35

lamb Wellington! Or for basic fare - Ham, Egg & Chips (yum). That and good beer! Grin

bellinisurge · 14/08/2018 15:40

Fish and chips is another thing to thank Jewish immigrants for. It is not an ancient English dish.

hungryhippie · 14/08/2018 15:43

Roast leg of Welsh Lamb and rosemary gravy
Apple pie or crumble

DameDoom · 14/08/2018 15:45

Full English with white sliced and a mug of tea.
Sunday roast with Yorkshire puds and cauliflower cheese.
Proper Geordie cheese savoury stotties or alternatively ham and pease pudding as a filling.

I do enjoy fine dining and can be a bit of a ponce in the kitchen but these 3 foods bring me more joy than anything else.

Jacket potatoes with cheese and beans - also food of the gods.
