Not a TAAT as such, but inspired by a response on a thread running at the moment.
It got me thinking of the differences between MN and my RL friends and acquaintances, and things that are accepted wisdom on MN that no-one I know in real life cares about at all.
I will start off:

  1. Little girls who wear pink clothing, and gendered clothing in general;
  2. Scented sanitary towels;
  3. Fruit Shoots
  4. People cuddling/touching/talking to your child;
The amount of threads and angst over these topics is staggering, yet no-one I know would even think any of the above were worth discussing, never mind getting worked up about. Anymore?

I frequently buy scented sanitary pads by accident because the warning that the product is scented is often cunningly hidden, and also because I sometimes forget to bring my glasses when I go shopping.

Just because a product is being bought doesn't mean it is loved and appreciated.

Just thought of one there seems to be some people completely obsessed with protein. I've never heard anyone in real life say "not much protein in that meal is there?"

ImAIdoot · 13/08/2018 20:42

I am confident that at least 80% of the women who are super right on about public nudity/topless sunbathing/short shorts on MN are actually the opposite in real life and would totally judge/raise an eyebrow.

PaulRuddislush · 13/08/2018 20:44

The legendary "you've only seen a snapshot" when op has witnessed some truly appalling behaviour. Again something no one says irl.

derxa · 13/08/2018 20:48

Everyone buys 'locally sourced meat' instead of Tesco like most people.

nuttyknitter · 13/08/2018 20:55

I always feel sad when I hear people expressing the view that in laws, or step children, don't count as real family. We have a big extended family which includes step parents and children and lots of in laws and they are all treated equally.

Only on mumsnet can people really not understand that some people really do not have money at the end if the month to put into savings

TillyTadpole · 13/08/2018 21:01

I've just been reading the did threads.

"Can someone give me advice. I'm looking to buy a puppy. Can't choose between a French bulldog or a cavalier king Charles spaniel".

Reply... " Why not rehome a greyhound". 😳🤷‍♀️😂

littlecabbage · 13/08/2018 21:05

I know loads of people IRL who hate the "blue for boys, pink for girls" mentality.

lostinjapan · 13/08/2018 21:12

Only on Mumsnet do people get so angry/faux-confused when an over 18 year old female is referred to as a 'girl'.

e.g. 'there's a 'girl' who works at your local nightclub? I don't understand, how can a child work in a nightclub? Perhaps you meant to say 'woman'?'

Oxford English Dictionary definition of 'girl' = a female child, a young or relatively young woman.

OK, I understand how 'girl' can be patronising in some circumstances, but mostly it's just used in a friendly or affectionate manner. It's just the female equivalent of 'guy'.

Oh and there's also the 'vulva'/'vagina' thing. Don't get me started on that...

AlwaysFuckingTired · 13/08/2018 21:12

Various names that get regularly suggested on the baby names board, as if they're just a normal everyday names that someone would genuinely consider

"Juno?"

BearCubX · 13/08/2018 21:19

All other than fruit shoots annoy me a lot. And fruit shoots are shit so maybe I actually do agree with all 4.

twosillybulls · 13/08/2018 21:22

Only on MN have I heard so many people say that too much fruit is bad for kids (way too much sugar!) Confused

I like Juno 😂 I think there’s lots on MN you wouldn’t chat about IRL for many reasons, though some reactions are over the top. The answer to lots of family/relationship questions is to cut them off or break up, sometimes over seemingly small things.

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2018 21:30

'Which tampons are the best'?

'You need to get a mooncup'

Hmm
ImNotAsGreenasImCabbageLooking · 13/08/2018 21:35

Exactly lost, it's actually very common here in Ireland and not in any way patronising. In one particular county "well, girl" as a greeting is more common than hello/hi!

SchrodingersMeowth · 13/08/2018 21:38

Okay I disagree with the one up thread that says people who are okay with nudity on here, aren’t in real life. If I’m abroad I’m definitely not ashamed or weirded out to go topless on the beach. That’s a normal thing, surely?

I don’t wear sanitary towels but have bought scented tampons, I couldn’t really smell anything from them though Confused

I personally love fruit shoots, especially in France as they have ice tea and grenadine flavours! My kids don’t like them though... they like fruit juice, which would have me slain on here because of the sugar. But they drink a lot of water too and brush their teeth.

I never discourage fruit (ditto that they both brush their teeth) as they, especially the youngest hates vegetables.

Donthugmeimscared · 13/08/2018 21:39

Or the "I really don't want to use a mooncup" three posts later "you really should consider a mooncup"

whatwouldkeithRichardsdo2 · 13/08/2018 21:47

I don't know what a fruit shoot or a scented sanitary towel is.

Blessed.

poppym12 · 13/08/2018 21:47

sanitary towels are scented? When did that happen? Probably around the time I started getting thrush every month Confused. I switched to Tenas instead as they're obviously absorbent and didn't give me thrush Grin.

EdWinchester · 13/08/2018 21:53

I have ever met an actual rl person who has been all 'ooh we can't countenance a visitor until at least 3 weeks after the birth'. Only on MN.

amazingpoddlehairdo · 13/08/2018 22:24

I bet most of the scented sanitary towel purchases are accidental. I was so angry I spent money of the stinky ones.

Ps I have a toilet brush
