If you drink three pints and six vodkas, of course you're drunk!

Ben Stokes, testifying under oath in court, claimed he wasn't.

That's at least 12 units. If it's a strong beer and large doubles (70ml) of vodka it could be 25 units. With that, of course he was bloody well drunk!

He could have been tipsy but lot necessarily drunk. I can drink a few pints and loads of vodka before I get drunk and the measures are really small in clubs.

Whereas a bottle of wine I'd be drunk as I rarely drink it. It depends what you're used to & how often you drink.

AnneProtheroe · 09/08/2018 20:39

I can (but don't) drink any amount of vodka with scarily no ill effects. No getting pissed, no hangover, nothing.

I'm able to converse as if I were stone cold sober.

Three pints of lager on top - meh.

I do not drink vodka because of this.

thecatsthecats · 09/08/2018 20:41

Back when I was a capable drinker, no, I wouldn't have felt especially drunk off that.

Reduced capacity in some ways, yes, feeling the buzz, bloody hope so. But never at that personality flip, bodily incapable, bad decision making stage that I associate with drunk as opposed to tipsy.

Autumnchill · 09/08/2018 20:48

It depends on the night! I've been drunk on 2 white wine spritzers and also had a night were I'm fully aware and not slurring etc on a bottle of Prosecco and a couple of gins.

Alcohol affects different people different ways.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 09/08/2018 20:49

I can drink spirits all night long without getting drunk, beer and wine however, I'm tipsy after 2!

MrsTommyBanks · 09/08/2018 20:50

That would have been breakfast in my heavy drinking days. Would have probably got me to 'normal' i.e not withdrawing.

Buzzlightyearsbumchin · 09/08/2018 20:51

I probably wouldn't be drunk on that.

Give me a glass and a half of wine and I'd be floored though.

CakeNinja · 09/08/2018 20:51

I had 6 pints of lager yesterday and was steaming drunk. Do not so much.
6 vodkas would make me merrily tipsy but not falling down drunk.
A combination? I’m not sure, I don’t mix my drinks.
Everyone metabolises drink at a different rate I think?

TheLittleThingsLikeVodka · 09/08/2018 20:51

Not so much any more but in my uni days I could have drunk that and felt a little bit tipsy, especially if I’d be drinking over a few hours

JaneJeffer · 09/08/2018 20:52

I'm immune to vodka.

CakeNinja · 09/08/2018 20:53

That should say DP not so much Grin

Anythingforacatslife · 09/08/2018 20:53

Probably not. I imagine he drinks quite often and he’s a big bloke.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 09/08/2018 20:53

What everyone else said. He’s also a very big bloke so probably can drink more than many.

Backstabbath · 09/08/2018 20:54

No chance would he be drunk.
He's a big lad and a good 15st. 3 pints and 6 vodkas in a night out would be nothing.

Dafspunk · 09/08/2018 20:55

Eh? Wouldn’t touch the sides.

DroningOn · 09/08/2018 20:55

Over several hours with maybe food and I wouldn't expect to be terribly drunk

SoyDora · 09/08/2018 20:57

DH is a 6ft 4 rugby player and would not be drunk on that amount of alcohol. I’d be under the table!

PunkrockerGirl59 · 09/08/2018 20:57

He'd be over the drink/drive limit, obviously. But drunk, not necessarily.

RedBallpointPens · 09/08/2018 20:59

I'm 5'5" and weigh 10st and I'd be drunk on that much. However, my 6'3", 15st DBro is often just tipsy when I'm drunk if we are drinking the same amount in the same timeframe and I don't think he'd be drunk on that (though he never drinks spirits so I can't be sure).

c3pu · 09/08/2018 21:12

Depending on the strength of what he was drinking, the length of time over which it was consumed, if he had a full stomach, and the fact he's a big heavy bloke in a good state of fitness...

Then throw in how different people would define "being drunk"...

I would say it's perfectly plausible that he wouldn't consider himself "drunk"

Jaxhog · 09/08/2018 21:15

You may not FEEL drunk, but you are certainly quite impaired.

Personally, I'd be throwing up in the bog after that.

Bluntness100 · 09/08/2018 21:18

I could drink three pints of beer and six pub measures of vodka and be far from drunk. Especially if over a few hours and I'd eaten.

Six vodkas would maybe have the same impact on me as a glass and a half of wine. Beer just bags me up.

And I'm not particularly big. So I'd imagine he's telling the truth he wasn't drunk.

safariboot · 09/08/2018 21:22

Seems most disagree with me then. And I acknowledge that it's not clear how long a time period it was over. Drunk steadily throughout the day it would probably make most people only mildly tipsy.

And I suppose it comes down to what is meant by "drunk". Some people don't show it but that doesn't mean it hasn't affected them. When I was at university I could drink a bottle of wine and I wouldn't be obviously drunk, I wouldn't be falling over or throwing up and wouldn't really feel drunk, but then I'd have sudden mood swings I'd never have while sober. I never got violent but I could go from feeling on top of the world to feeling like my world was ending in seconds. I've also been convinced I wasn't drunk when on later reflection yes I really was. (These are part of the reason I'd rarely have more than a couple of drinks in an evening nowadays.)
