If you drink three pints and six vodkas, of course you're drunk!

Ben Stokes, testifying under oath in court, claimed he wasn't.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-45126702

That's at least 12 units. If it's a strong beer and large doubles (70ml) of vodka it could be 25 units. With that, of course he was bloody well drunk!

PS: And I suppose my latter experience means that yes, Stokes could reasonably have not really been aware of the effect the alcohol had on him.

Watching the video, I wouldn't say he was drunk. This post clearly shows different alcohol affects different people in different ways. When I was younger I could easily have drunk that before I started to feel drunk.

MartyMcFly1984 · 09/08/2018 21:45

Over what period? Had he been out since breakfast, had a massive fry up then greasy dinner and kebab for tea before going home at 11pm? Probably more sober than me now.
Over a 3hr period with no food, then probably passed tipsy.

Bluntness100 · 09/08/2018 21:45

No one is saying he wasn't impaired, but it's doubtful he was drunk. There is a whole multitude of levels between the two. He's a big lad, and he could probably tolerate that amount of alcohol.

RedBallpointPens · 10/08/2018 00:35

safari you seem to be missing the point. Different people react differently to alcohol for a multitude of reasons. So you may have an amount to drink and not feel drunk at the time but recognise it later. With the exact same amount if alcohol I may feel drunk at the time. And my brother wouldn't feel drunk, appear drunk to others or look back later and think he was drunk. Because we are different people - I probably drink more than you and my DBro is simply physically bigger.

There are amounts of alcohol I'd have difficulty believing a person wasn't drunk - I don't know anyone who can drink a bottle of whiskey without being drunk for example. But with the amount reported here it depends of the individual.

caroldecker · 10/08/2018 00:45

Matched finished at about 6pm, first drink at 7pm, incident was 3am. 12 units over 8 hours is c.5 units in bloodstream. Possibly even under the drink drive limit, easily not drunk.

LeighaJ · 10/08/2018 01:00

Wow shocking how high the tolerance is of many people.

delphguelph · 10/08/2018 01:05

I'd be shit faced. But then I never drink, I'm 5'5 and ten stone.

MrMeSeeks · 10/08/2018 01:07

Wow shocking how high the tolerance is of many people
Not really.
Some people have higher tolerances.
Me, i’d be drunk afrer the 3 vodkas, my dh wouldn't be drunk on thos.
He’s a big guy though, me not so much.

MrMeSeeks · 10/08/2018 01:07

Meant to say some people have *different tolerances.

rubbsto · 10/08/2018 03:10

I depends on the person and their size, sex, age, race, what they've eaten etc.

I would be tipsy, not drunk. DH would be fine.

Greggers2017 · 10/08/2018 03:29

It massively depends on body tolerance. I have clients at work who blow off the scale on the breatherlyser and still act stone cold sober whereas some blow twice the drink drive limit and are steaming.
@safariboot 1 bottle of wine wouldn't affect some people it's only 3 large glasses. I'd still feel ok on that.

Bluntness100 · 10/08/2018 07:24

The thing is if this guy says he wasn't drunk there is no reason to disbelieve him and many reasons to believe him.

He's a big lad, this was drunk over several hours, he's used to alcohol, and if he'd eaten, which he likely had, he was probably relatively sober. Impaired, yes probably just over thr drink drive limit, but probably not even tipsy never mind drunk.

LakieLady · 10/08/2018 08:02

I find spirits don't get me as drunk, per unit (so to speak) as wine or beer. I can drink shedloads of gin or vodka and still be half sensible, but I'm tipsy on 3 pints of 4% beer and pissed on 4.

That 4 pints is less in terms of units of alcohol than a bottle of wine. but the wine doesn't make me feel as drunk. And I can drink nearly half a bottle of gin before I feel as drunk as I do on 4 pints.

I've decided it's down to the concentration of the alcohol. More water with it makes me more drunk, not less!

Bluntness100 · 10/08/2018 08:39

It's weird how alcohol not only affects us all differently, but also different alcohols.

A bottle of wine and I'd be puking in the corner absolutely off my face, where as I could drink a good few vodkas and be still coherent and not even come across as tipsy. Beer doesn't really get me drunk either, I think because it bags me up, three beers wouldn't really impact me hugely. Fizzy wine impacts me much less than normal wine. I can drink a bottle of prosseco and be fine.

Also how much you've eaten as well as over how long a period you've drunk it as well as things like did you also drink water also impacts.

In addition everyone has their own tolerance level. Someone who never drinks would be really impacted by a relatively small amount of alcohol. Where as a heavy drinker, say an alcoholic, can consume vast quantities and appear unaffected.

HoHoHoHo · 10/08/2018 08:44

I think that if you're used to drinking you can be drunk (as in your skills are impaired and making decisions you wouldn't normally) without feeling drunk.

Which is why the man in the op and some posters on here genuinely believe they wouldn't be after so much alcohol. They would be though.

Bluntness100 · 10/08/2018 08:53

No they wouldn't. Drunk definition is you've lost control of your facilities or behaviour. That's very very unlikely on that much alcohol, over the time period given for that size man if used to alcohol.

Seryph · 10/08/2018 19:10

I'm 5'6, over 15 stone (yes, I know how stupidly overweight I am, I'm working on it) and not at the height of my drinking career anymore. But depending on how much I'd eaten that day and how long a period that was over (apparently around 12 hours), I would be upright, not staggering or slurring.
And I would step straight in if I heard someone being a homophobic arsewipe. But then I'd do that stone cold sober.

PinkHeart5914 · 10/08/2018 19:14

I wouldn’t be drunk!

Vodka has no effect, I can drink doubles all night and not feel drunk at all. 3 pints wouldn’t get me drunk either tbh

Gin or champagne is another matter, they get me hammered in no time

bellabasset · 10/08/2018 21:43

I doubt he would pass the breathalyser but possibly not drunk. He'd played cricket, would have had lunch and tea before a meal with his team mates where he drunk 3 pints. If he had left his mates at 9pm then he would have had 6 more drinks before 3am

In the video of him talking to the police he sounded fairly coherent. Doesn't mean the alcohol didn't affect his behaviour.

bluerunningshoes · 10/08/2018 22:02

of course he was drunk after consuming all that. he might be in denial not feel like it, but def had 'a few too many'

Bluntness100 · 11/08/2018 14:33

I think you can tell the tea totallars from the boozers very easily on this thread.

Most who drink say "meh, he wouldn't be drunk" those who don't " say of course he would be drunk" .

I think the tea totallers should listen to the boozers. We know what we are talking about. You've clearly no idea.🤣
