To ask if anyone does actually get up at the cracks of dawn to exercise?

Chatting to a friend about fitting in exercise and a full time job. Mentioned getting up at 5 to exercise before getting ready for work. Surely people don't get up that early to exercise? If they do what time do they go to bed?
Is it unreasonable to think 5am is just too early?

I can do 6am but 5am is a step too far!!

AwfulSomething · 09/08/2018 20:11

I do. Earlier if I have to be at work for 0530. It sets me up for the day.

bluetrampolines · 09/08/2018 20:11

I used to live overseas and swan very early. Often before 6am. It felt amazing!

lljkk · 09/08/2018 20:11

I think 6:20am is crack of dawn.
For natural Larks I'm sure 5am is easy.

MeanTangerine · 09/08/2018 20:13

I'm sometimes up at 5.45 for a run before work. Best time of the day. Spring and autumn you see sunrise, and no one else around (my idea of heaven).

I'm in bed 10.30 ish, usually.

HolyMountain · 09/08/2018 20:16

I’m a term time only worker and since I’ve finished work I’ve been getting up 7.30 am to exercise at home ; bike , weights etc.

When I go back in September I need to fit it in before work so will get up 5.15 ish to get it done because I won’t do it after I’ve finished for the day.

MsChanandlerBoing · 09/08/2018 20:23

I’m not a morning person at all but will force myself to get up at 5.45 or 6 am (depending on if lunch is made) to go to the gym before work. For me personally it’s less about if you’re a morning person but more if you prefer to workout before or after work person. I can force myself out of bed early (and you really do get used to it!) but I’m always exhausted after work and can never do it then. That said I don’t have kids yet so dunno how that’ll work.

ShirleyPhallus · 09/08/2018 20:26

Yup, up at 5.15 to be in the gym at 6.15

You have to be super prepared the night before

And the gym at 8am is a fucking ZOO. Women with entire buckets and baskets of products getting ready. Plucking chins and everything.

Pippylou · 09/08/2018 20:27

The 6am classes in a Crossfitty gym are often very busy. So I'm told... :-)

RedneckStumpy · 09/08/2018 20:29

DH is normally up at 5:30-6. He doesn’t exercise but gets stuff done around the house.

We are in bed around 10:00

lljkk · 09/08/2018 20:31

If I can get in pool by 6:35am (pool opens at 6:30), I can get 45 minute swim before catching train to work at 7:45am. Not easy... but desirable b/c evening lanes sessions don't start until 8pm.

MissCharleyP · 09/08/2018 20:33

When I wasn’t working, I’d sometimes get up at 0530 for a 0615 class. Now I’ve started work I’m up at 4 - no way am I getting up at 2 to fit exercise in! On my days off/late shifts I’ll either get up around 7 for a run or go to the early gym class. I much prefer exercising in the morning before I’ve done anything else, I just don’t have the same energy/enthusiasm after work.

I get up at 4:44 to get to work on time. The only exercise I see before my key goes into the gates is lifting my coffee mug. (Manual Work thereafter must count for something though?)

In order to exercise before work, I'd probably have to set my alarm for 3:14. I'm a natural night owl. It's not going to happen.

RavenLG · 09/08/2018 20:38

I really need to do this but I struggle getting out of bed and awake for 6am. I don’t know how I’d manage

Gin96 · 09/08/2018 20:40

I’m up and out at 5 to ride and muck out my horse, it’s the best time of the day, once you can drag yourself out of bed

AlbertaSimmons · 09/08/2018 20:40

I have a personal training session once a week at 6.30am. It's hard in the winter, but great on sunny summer mornings to be up and about.

RubbishG3nericUsername · 09/08/2018 20:42

When training for a triathlon my alarm is regularly set for 5.15am, I'm looking forward to some 6.30am lie ins once the tri season is over in September. If not actively training for a specific event then I usually fit an hours excercise into my work lunch break or evenings after DD is in bed.

SinglePringle · 09/08/2018 20:43

Yep. Frequently set the alarm for 5am to hit the gym before work. Like PP, it sets me up for the day and I’d rather exercise before work than after (often don’t finish work till 8pm / Home at 9pm).

banjaxedeejit · 09/08/2018 20:45

I'm usually up at 5am to walk the dog before work. I love that time as I don't get in the way of cyclists or horse riders (we all share the same path)
Come winter and it might be a different story!

YouTheCat · 09/08/2018 20:45

Dp gets up around 5. Walks to gym (about 30 minutes) and is there for it opening at 6am. He goes straight to work after.

As it's the holidays I've been getting up at 7 and going for 8.30 as I have off-peak membership and it's the earliest I can go.

BlueGlasses · 09/08/2018 20:45

To get a run in before work I get out at 5.30am so that I'm back to jump in the shower at 6.15 before my eldest son gets up and in the shower at 6.30. It can be difficult to motivate myself to roll out of bed at 5am but the feeling after the run is amazing and sets me up for the day.

LaGattaNera · 09/08/2018 20:46

Yep most mornings up 5am either a run or body pump or spin at the gym - Tues I did spin and today and yesterday did a run. Often do pump at 6.30am on Tues & Thursdays. I have to make myself have a lie in and usually it is only till am, 6.30am is a really late lie in for me - my body naturally wants to get up and get going.

Murphystrikeback · 09/08/2018 20:47

I’m quite often out for a run at 5.30am. Sets me up for the day and has been the coolest part of the day when it’s been hot!

Botanicbaby · 09/08/2018 20:48

YABU to say 5am is too early for exercise. However, I find the people that go on and on and mention it tend to be the ones that don’t actually do it. They just like the idea of it in their heads. Wink
