To ask if anyone does actually get up at the cracks of dawn to exercise?

Chatting to a friend about fitting in exercise and a full time job. Mentioned getting up at 5 to exercise before getting ready for work. Surely people don't get up that early to exercise? If they do what time do they go to bed?
Is it unreasonable to think 5am is just too early?

I used to before the DC were around.

Now I'll take any extra 5 minutes in bed and don't want to risk waking them up.

I tend to do it after they've gone to bed, but this means there's more chance that I just cba by then. Blush

I do 20 min exercise in the house as soon as I get up at 6.30. I leave the house at 7.15. I do it in the vest and pants I've slept in but having to get dressed and go to a venue to do it is next level. I do miss it sometimes but I know I feel better on the days I do it so it incentivises me. When I started I was doing about 2 minutes of stretches, which wasn't really a big deal in terms of getting up earlier, then I started doing more and then I did that plus about 60 seconds on a old exercise bike of my mums and once I could do that without dying I built it up. I do about 5 min of stretches and 15 min on a cross trainer (eBay bargain) and I do the same again as soon as I get home from work. I'm still not very fit but I was very very unfit before and I feel better and I used to get back pain and achey hips and knees and that has all gone

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 09/08/2018 22:45

Last year I was up at six, in pool by half six, swim for an hour then back to do school run at 8. Looooved it.

Fell out of routine, now am back to staying up way too late at night and crawling out of bed at 7:45. It's like I was a different person. Plan to get back to it soon!

Newjobworkwear · 09/08/2018 23:32

I'm in awe of all the people who get up so early just to work out! I'm definitely not a morning person but may give it a try and see if I like it. I tend to plan to exercise in the evenings but then I'm too tired and it just doesn't happen

Nope, and def don't see the appeal of a gym. Hate all that fake exercise, but imagine a nice walk or bike ride seeing the sunrise would be pleasant enough. I like bed.

kmc1111 · 09/08/2018 23:47

I get up at 4, get to gym at 4:30 and work out for an hour. When I’m leaving there’s usually a ton of people arriving for classes at 6.

asphodelus · 10/08/2018 11:15

In my dreams, I would be this kind of person! I feel sick if I don’t get enough sleep though.

SillySallySingsSongs · 10/08/2018 11:22

DH does. He has a stressful job and a nervous breakdown due to his marriage breakdown years ago.

For him it is his stress release and the best time to do it. He has full residency of DSC and by doing it in the morning whilst they are still in bed, means evenings were free. although now they involve taking and dropping off at clubs, friends etc etc etc

As for me... I'm quite happy staying in bed for longer. Wink

DSC Eldest all take after their dad I think as they are into every sport going and are very good at it. Younger is like me.

Saracen · 10/08/2018 12:13

I used to get up early to exercise, because DP or my teen would be home in bed anyway and therefore I could leave my younger child for them to look after. Childcare was a pain to arrange at other times of day. It made a nice start to the day also, and meant I could have my daily shower after swimming, rather than having to do my hair twice in a day.

areyoubeingserviced · 10/08/2018 12:29

I wake up at 4:30am to exercise

Tika77 · 10/08/2018 12:40

Before kids I used to be able to, up at 5, got to the gym by opening time (wokenup in the tube properly), done workout, went to work.
I couldn’t do it now, if I don’t get going straight away, I won’t exercise and I’d pack up from cardio straight after waking up.

havingabadhairday · 10/08/2018 12:45

Good god no. I barely get enough sleep as it is without waking earlier than I have to. I do walk to work and back though, so do fit in some exercise.

Gumbo · 10/08/2018 12:46

I love the idea of being given able to sleep later, but my natural body clock wakes me up between 04:30 and 04:45 each day, so I get up and go cycling for an hour or so. In all honesty it is awesome being out that time of day when nobody is about except random deer/badgers etc!

Easty1000 · 10/08/2018 13:01

The husband regularly goes for a run at 5.30 but is naturally an early bird. He will also get up before sunrise to stalk deer (so 3am in summer 😬)

I would love to but 6.15 is generally the earliest I can function!!

theredjellybean · 10/08/2018 13:03

I am out running at 5am in summer.. It's best time of the day
But then I go to bed at 9pm

Caribbeanyesplease · 10/08/2018 13:04

5.45am here

It’s heavenly, absolutely heavenly going for a run at this time

ZanyMobster · 10/08/2018 13:09

I get up at 540, leave at 6 for a HIITs session at 615 twice a week. It's a struggle as I don't tend to go to bed till midnight but gets it doe and means DH can go in the evenings.

ZanyMobster · 10/08/2018 13:10

Once you get into it its easier than you would imagine, I even naturally wake up at 540 on the 2 days I go, which is slightly annoying when I have decided not to go lol

Buxtonstill · 10/08/2018 13:13

I live a stones throw from my local pool. I wake at 5.30, I'm in the pool at 6, swim a mile out at 7. Home by 7.15, dress for work and out of the house by 7.30. You have to prep a bit. The night before I pack my swimming bag, and sort which clothes I will be wearing to work. It is lovely at that time in the morning, even in the winter.

Snicklefritz · 10/08/2018 13:16

Mon-Fri I'm up at 4am everyday to go to the gym - Usually I go to bed 9-10pm so it's pretty early compared to some people.

It's easy but you have to get yourself into the routine of it.

I set my alarm on the other side of the room so I HAVE to get up.

Weekends I'm usually up around 5-6am.. That's just the natural time I wake up now. I love having a nice long day though :)

Mari50 · 10/08/2018 13:23

I frequently wish I could do this but I can barely get myself out of bed for 7am (alarm goes off at 6.20)
I have done it a few times but find myself so exhausted by the middle of the day that it’s just not worth it.
Wouldn’t mind if I was up late but I’m usually in bed for 9.30/10.

Travis1 · 10/08/2018 13:31

I'm up at 5.45am most mornings and in a class for 6.15am if I don't do it in the morning I don't do it at all, though I've recently introduced a monday and wednesday evening class too.

Neverender · 10/08/2018 14:06

I get up at 6am and drive to the free work in my gym gear for 6:50am ish. No one is there and it's like having my own private gym. Work out for an hour, shower, at my desk for 8:30 latest.

Of course people get up early and exercise - when they want to. I go to bed at 10:30 latest.

Prinkley · 10/08/2018 14:14

Urgh I'm am not a morning person. 5am is the middle of the night to me. I get up at 7.30am! Even then I'm a zombie until I've had a shower and a cup of tea.

Everyone is different

AlbertaWildRose · 10/08/2018 14:23

I get up at 5 am 4 days a week to work out. I do cardio and strength training at home. I'm in the shower by 6, wake up the kids at 6:30 and leave for work at 7:30. If I didn't get up early, I would never have time to work out - evenings are too hectic and I'm too tired.
