Maggots in wheelie bin

ItWasAlIADream · 09/08/2018 13:04

My bin is crawling! I mean there are thousands upon thousands! Ive tried to get rid of them with boiling water but everytime I go out more have appeared. Will the bin men refuse to take the bin? Im so mortified all my neighbours will be able to see and I will have to go out and clean the street up after they take the bins away. Hot water doesnt seem to kill them just makes more come up Sad

Don't do anything until the bin is emptied. Then give it a clean or get someone else to clean it. Pouring water over rubbish will just make a delicious soup for them and encourage more.

ohgodnotyouagain · 09/08/2018 13:10

When we had them in ours we waiting until the bin had been emptied and then used bleach all down the sides of the bin and on the bottom and poured quite a few kettles of boiling water in there.
We haven't had any more since.

MummytoCSJH · 09/08/2018 13:11

I had this, it's really common in hot weather. I've hired somebody to clean my bin after the bin men have been now, only £5 a time so £10 a month. Not too bad.

CatLadyToddlerMother · 09/08/2018 13:13

Wait till the bin is emptied and then put dettol disinfectant and boiling water in the bin. Should kill them.

ItWasAlIADream · 09/08/2018 13:13

Oh ok I will wait till they collect it then. Its normally around 12 so they must be running late. Just mortified as they are everywhere, neighbours probably think im disgusting.

It’s horrible but I bet some of your neighbours have the same. We’ve had some too and bleach works.

CobaltRose · 09/08/2018 13:13

Make sure the lid is tightly closed, as without an opening flies can't get in. Tightly wrap all food waste.

Bleach or plenty of salt in the bin after it's been emptied should kill the buggers. Worked for us anyway.

user1500013325 · 09/08/2018 13:18

@itwasalladream We've recently had this problem too - think it's the dog poo, even though it's all bagged, combined with the heat.

I sprayed the bin with copious amounts of fly spray and shut the lid on it, came home after work and they all appeared to be dead so hosed down the outside to get rid of the ones that had crawled out. Bin day is Friday (thankfully) so will give it a good bleach once it's emptied.

cricketmum84 · 09/08/2018 13:26

We had them too :( couldn't do much until it had been emptied then DH washed it out with disinfectant and lots of water. Like you I was mortified that the neighbours could see all the flies hanging around it and probably thought we were right scruffers! Thank god they are all gone now!

ItWillAllBeOkayInTheEnd · 09/08/2018 13:32

Just use fly spray.

ItWasAlIADream · 09/08/2018 13:33

Bin men are here now. so humiliating! the streets crawling and im not exaggerating. Ive been up and down with the kettle but my 15 month old keeps chasing me screaming :(

I had the same on Tuesday I sprayed bleach then pulled all the bags out sprayed everything with bleach rebagged some DH had left open cleaned the bin put the bags back in and washed the drive. It's one of the grossest things I've ever had to do but there were thousands I couldn't leave it to the bin men.

bluetrampolines · 09/08/2018 13:36

Yes. Bleach. Lots of it.

Rainagain1 · 09/08/2018 13:40

Urgh we had this last week with over week to bin day so had to empty bin and clean. Yuck!
Best thing I have found is powder called bin buddy. Once bin empty bleach and hose till all gone and dry. Then add sprinkle of powider every so often and keeps them gone.

dementedpixie · 09/08/2018 13:40

I had this last week. I used bin deodorising powder, lots of salt and then fly spray. I didn't fancy using water as it would make a maggot/ food waste soup in the bottom of the bin. After it was emptied I squirted in bleach and used my hose to clean it out near the outside drain and then tipped it down the drain. From talking to neighbours I'm not the only one with a maggot issue.

I'm now double bagging my food waste to try and stop it happening again

Haggisfish · 09/08/2018 13:41

Don’t bother. Just leave lid open for a few days after emptying and they will all fly away!! D

Skyejuly · 09/08/2018 13:42

I used fly spray to kill then boiling water on top xxx

Racecardriver · 09/08/2018 13:43

I really don't thing your neighbours will be judging you on the cleanliness of a rubbish bin. Don't worry about it.

BruceAndNosh · 09/08/2018 13:44

I wouldn't worry about the odd one that has dropped on the street, the birds will be grateful for moist food and will clear them up

Itchytights · 09/08/2018 13:45

Use salt. Shed loads of salt. As well as bleach.

Are you putting chicken bones/ carcasses in the bin? That’s usually a primary cause.

alwaysthesameold · 09/08/2018 14:00

We used jeyes fluid and boiling water.
The jeyes made the whole street STINK of disinfectant.
It worked though!

ItWasAlIADream · 09/08/2018 14:13

Yeh I do normally put chicken bones in and dont double bag will be making sure I do from now on. I never want that again. Its raining here so hopefully the rain will wash the dead ones down the drain!

Any food scraps or bones should be wrapped in foil or clingfilm and bagged securely. Stops maggots and stinkiness. Every time bin is emptied spray inside with disinfectant or bleach too.

dementedpixie · 09/08/2018 14:32

We're not allowed foil or cling film in our food waste bin. We use biodegradable food waste bags. I am now going to double bag it all now as I don't trust just using one now

Hogtini · 09/08/2018 14:39

We had them too - I was mortified. Definitely bleach and boiling water.
