WIBU to ask for more chips?

We were supposed to be having salad tonight for tea but I —accidentally— ate most of the baby plum tomatoes this morning, so my penance was to pick up a chippy tea on the way home. It wasn’t busy, only one person in being detected when I got there. I ordered a fish butty for DP and a chip butty for me (no kids). I paid £6 all together (live in Yorkshire) and this is all I got!!

The chippy is local, and usually much more generous than this.

Was I being unreasonable to drive back to the chippy, via the bloody temporary traffic lights to ask where the rest of my chips were?

Here a chip butty is cheaper by some way than a portion of chips-so you would get what you got. But it would be about £1. Portion of chips would be £1.50-£2.50 depending on size.

YANBU if it cost you more than standard chips!

AjasLipstick · 08/08/2018 10:40

Excellent I'm a Northerner! I've had plenty of chip butties in my time.

Unsure I agree.

theunsure · 08/08/2018 10:40

Oh and I say roll. I’m from South though, but living in East Mids where they say cob.
I say cob in the chippy though as otherwise it’s embarrassing, but refer to roll at home!

longwayoff · 08/08/2018 10:45

PLEASE tell me what chip spice is and what's in it. We shake barbecue seasoning on ours.

Heismyopendoor · 08/08/2018 10:48

lipstick she was charged for a full portion of chips and the roll. So that’s pretty stingy.

We say roll here. Just outside Glasgow.

A sausage roll is a sausage roll
A roll an sausage is a roll filled with sausage (generally square sausage!)

Original American Chip Spice Red Salt shaker with Paprika by American Chip Spice www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01H2SRCEY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ZXRABbB8E8094?tag=mumsnetforum-21

This is the stuff. It's nice on fries and oven chips but not on chippy chips.

Trinity66 · 08/08/2018 10:50

The chips look undercooked as well, why is it so hard for chip shops to cook chips properly?

AlpacaPicnic · 08/08/2018 10:53

If you think the confusion over bread roll names is fun, try asking Americans about pigs in blankets.
Uk version as we all know and love - sausage wrapped in bacon.
USA version, as I discovered to my great shock, hot dog sausage wrapped in pastry or possibly bread dough then cooked...

It could be a fresh batch of oil.

longwayoff · 08/08/2018 10:54

Thanks fairgame, I'm off to Amazon to give it a go

lovelovelovepancakes · 08/08/2018 10:56

Not related at all to the chip butty issue but whenever someone says bread cake I always imagine a cake decorated as a loaf of bread. I googled it and I got a picture of a cake decorated as a loaf of bread but the first pics were of banana bread and other variations. Obviously I do know it's a roll I just found it interesting.
Sorry as you were Blush

Maybe so but I've actually come across it alot in different chip shops where they're actually borderline raw, and mushy, it's gross and annoying, I mean cooking the chips should be the most basic important bit of chip shoppery(?) Also, some of them have that kind of slimey not cooked properly look

SisyphusHadItEasy · 08/08/2018 11:03

I am Canadian, the idea of a chip sandwich is lost on me.

Am I missing something crucial from my life?

MaxPepsi · 08/08/2018 11:03

I'm a Yorkshire Lass.
I've never called it a chippy tea. EVER.
Sorry OP.
It's a bloody awful saying and certainly not used in my part. Small town Equidistant between Leeds and Bradford.

SaucyJack · 08/08/2018 11:20

I’ve never had poutine Sisyphus, but it looks amazing- and so I’d be very surprised if you Canadians were the ones missing out on the chip dinner front.

1forsorrow2forjoy · 08/08/2018 11:22

Our local chip shop is funny, if my DP goes in he gets a reasonable amount, of I go in I get more and if I send my DDs in they get loads. It's always more financially savvy to send the kids, one large portion can feed 5 of us!

FissionChips · 08/08/2018 11:39

Aren’t proper chippy chips fried in beef dripping?

AjasLipstick · 08/08/2018 11:41

Max Well I know someone who used to have something called a "biccy tea"

Apparently it was when her Dad couldn't be arsed to make the kids a proper meal and would give them a packet of biscuits each!

"Biccy tea tonight kids!"

Grin Shock

AjasLipstick · 08/08/2018 11:43

Since moving to Australia I've discovered the joys of chicken salt.

It's some terrible additive laden "salt" which is added to chips here...and tastes of the seasoning on chicken crisps!

They usually ask "Chicken salt?" and if you don't want the additives in your life you say no thanks.

Hopeandeggs · 08/08/2018 11:46

In ours a chip barm (butty) is more expensive than chips so you get a full portion of chips and a barm cake.

ShapelyBingoWing · 08/08/2018 11:46

That's about right for a chip barm around here. But our chip barms are considerably cheaper than a portion of chips. Usually about £1.20-£1.50.

If I'd ordered a portion of chips and paid additionally for the inclusion of a barm cake it would come to about £3 and I'd expect loads more chips than that.

AjasLipstick · 08/08/2018 11:51

Why won't OP bloody come back and tell us what it cost compared to a portion/bag of chips!??

ShapelyBingoWing · 08/08/2018 12:01

In ours a chip barm (butty) is more expensive than chips

In my head, a chip barm and a chip butty are two separate things Grin

Chip barm - chippy chips on a buttered barm cake with salt and vinegar.

Chip butty - home made chips of any description between 2 sliced of cheap buttered white bread. No vinegar as the bread goes the wrong texture. Possible inclusion of salt and sauce.

Mousefunky · 08/08/2018 12:07

It’s like when you order a large meal from
McDonald’s and they give you a regular portion of fries in a large container. Really fucks me off yes I take it too seriously .

Dinnerfor1 · 08/08/2018 12:54

Ajas I’m not sure if you missed it, or you’re being sarcastic, but the op has said several times what it cost. She says it was the same cost as a portion of chips + 50p for the barm. So I would expect a full portion of chips.
