"killing dogs to eat and consuming their meat is legal in Britain"

Is it any different to eating any other animal? I mean I wouldn’t because I’m fussy but I can’t get worked up about it since I’m prepared to eat other animals.

MVLipwig · 06/08/2018 14:21

I wouldn’t eat it personally (apparently it’s pretty gross, very chewy and stringy) but they are ultimately an animal and as long as people aren’t stealing family pets to do it there’s not really anything wrong with it

HelpmeobiMN · 06/08/2018 14:22

Why is this not ok but slaughtering cows is?

Not trying to be a militant vegetarian here but I think it's really weird to draw distinctions between eating different kinds of animals. Either you think it's ok to kill animals for food or you don't, surely?

(Apologies if you don't eat any meat and I'm misunderstanding. I would also love for nobody to eat meat but you can't ban people from doing so - it's their choice)

LeftRightCentre · 06/08/2018 14:22

Why is it okay to eat pigs but not dogs? It's meat.

Aprilshowersinaugust · 06/08/2018 14:23

No words printable for the savages that kill these animals and claim it has all sorts of benefits. One of which is it keeps you cool in hot weather (?!?!)

RomanyRoots · 06/08/2018 14:24

I'm not sure I could do it, but we eat other animals so why not.
Other countries eat dog, cat, horse, etc.
it's not something I'd bother about tbh.
I can see why a vegetarian wouldn't want to eat it the same as any other animal. If you aren't veggie why not try it, you might like it.

Tanith · 06/08/2018 14:25

Did you realise that you are edible, Op? 😋

GoatWithACoat · 06/08/2018 14:27

I love meat and couldn’t live happily without it, but I think there is a distinction between eating a meat eating animal and a vegetarian one.

Eating another meat eater seems pretty gross.

But morally, as long as it’s stunned and ‘out of it’ when being killed, I can’t see its different on a moral level really.

vandrew4 · 06/08/2018 14:27

I've always had the gut instinct that with mammals, eating a carnivore seems wrong somehow. Vegetarian and omnivore animals seem fine but for some reason any carnivore seems a bit repulsive

ChocoholicsAsylum · 06/08/2018 14:27

Meat is meat dog or cow and it is hugely ignorant to think its not... we are also meat! There is no difference.

Weedinosaurus · 06/08/2018 14:28

Not my thing...but it’s an animal so technically the same as any other meat. Just like with snails and frogs legs - they’re not commonly eaten here so it feels like it has the ‘gross factor’ but in other cultures it’s the norm.

QueenCity · 06/08/2018 14:28

She needs to ban the export of ex-racing greyhounds to the Chinese meat trade. Sad

PsychoPumpkin · 06/08/2018 14:30

I feel like if you eat meat, you’re either okay with eating any animal or no animal.

This is coming from a meat eater.

SimonBridges · 06/08/2018 14:33

This is the reason I’m vegetarian. I wouldn’t eat a cat or dog so why eat a cow or sheep.

Eating another meat eater seems pretty gross.

So you don’t eat pork then?

NonaGrey · 06/08/2018 14:36

I eat meat. I don’t see a moral distinction between killing a cow/sheep/pig/chicken to eat and killing a dog or a cat. (even though I wouldn’t choose to eat a dog or a cat).

If it’s wrong to eat a dog then it’s also wrong to eat a pig.

Is it wrong for the dog to kill a rabbit? Or a cat to kill a mouse?

The distinction would be whether the animals are being killed in a humane way and whether food safety standards were being met.

Notevilstepmother · 06/08/2018 14:38

I don’t like cows. I like dogs.

missbattenburg · 06/08/2018 14:39

The big difference for me is the domestication process.

Over generations we have bred dogs into an animal that:

  • bonds/socialises more easily with humans than with its own kind
  • gets an oxytocin rush (the bonding hormone) from contact with humans and triggers one in return
  • lowers our stress levels and has its own stress levels lowered when in human company
  • has the ability to read our faces in the way we read them (different to how they read other dog faces)
  • looks to humans to help with a problem more than looks to other dogs or try to work it out themselves (unlike wolves, for e.g.)

...and so much more.

Seem a bit two faced to then kill them and eat them.

Bazzlebear · 06/08/2018 14:42

Either it's ok to breed and slaughter animals for meat, or it's not. It's well known that pigs and dogs are on a similar level in terms of intelligence so there's not even that argument to go for.

There is no disputing that we can live perfectly well without meat and meat eating is destroying the environment. Many people believe that our social and cultural beliefs and customs mean that we should continue to eat it- but you have to recognise that not eating dogs is just a custom in your culture, morally it's no different. Personally I choose the environment and welfare of all species over the traditions I was brought up with (I don't mean that to sound as preachy as it does but not sure how to rephrase!)

LeftRightCentre · 06/08/2018 14:42

I don’t like cows. I like dogs.

Then don't eat dogs. I like cows and dogs. Meat is meat and I'd eat either one.

Bazzlebear · 06/08/2018 14:43

(I'll be honest though, the thought of slaughtering dogs does upset me more than of pigs, simply because I have been brought up with a close emotional connection to dogs- not because their lives are worth more morally)

serbska · 06/08/2018 14:43

I don't think I would want to eat dog but I don't see it as really different fro horse or cow or guini pig or sheep or kangeroo etc

RebelRogue · 06/08/2018 14:44

I wouldn't..but that's because I'm a fussy git(only eat chicken and pork).

PrtScn · 06/08/2018 14:45

I think the distinction is, as missbattenberg says, one of domestication. Cows, sheep etc are "farm animals", dogs and cats are "pets". I personally eat meat, because I haven't raised it. If I lived on a farm and had daily contact with raising the animals, then there's not a chance in hell I'd be able to eat them. Double standards I know, but I think a lot of people think exactly like me!

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 06/08/2018 14:45

I don't get the hand wringing here. Same as that petition to ban a dog eating festival in China Confused WTF does it have to do with you if people eat dogs in CHina I always wonder.

People keep pigs as pets, they're smarter than dogs. surely wrong to eat them? All animals feel pain drawing arbitrary distinction based on the fact that some are kept for pets is silly.

ChelleDawg2020 · 06/08/2018 14:45

I personally am not tempted to eat dog meat, but then I'm not tempted to eat insects either. I eat pigs, cows, chicken, lamb, fish, pheasant, venison - the usual animals. I have no moral objection to eating other things, but they don't appeal to me.
