"killing dogs to eat and consuming their meat is legal in Britain"

OP posts:

@GoatWithACoat
That's a really interesting take on it, I'd never even thought that all the 'mainstream' uk meat is essentially vegetarian meat - I mean the animals only eat veg. 🙈

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 06/08/2018 16:32

My step mother is notorious for introducing you whilst mid chew "this was Gerald, he was a great little character, thought he was a dog" etc

Oh wow, that's rough.

More honest than eating packaged meat and treating it as if it never was part of an animal that lived, I suppose - but still Sad

donquixotedelamancha · 06/08/2018 16:40

I didn't know tired "Americans are thick ammirite?" jokes was the pinnacle of ironic humour. I bet you think piano ties are hilarious.

I didn't claim it was the pinnacle of humour. Humour is subjective and I wouldn't presume to try to dictate other's appreciation of it.

I merely pointed out that imagining I genuinely thought Americans were predisposed to be stupider than other humans and as such should be subject to cannibalism, was a little silly.

SavvySaver24 · 06/08/2018 16:48

This is horrific.

And to anyone saying, it is just meat, no different to cow, pig etc. YOU are meat too. So fo you now agree with eating people!? I class my dogs as a member of my family - equally as important as any human family member.

strawberrisc · 06/08/2018 16:49

Interesting that the OP hit and ran.

WillowRose79 · 06/08/2018 16:50

When it all came out about the horse meat and people were "outraged" its still an animal!!!!!! If I had meat in my veggie burger then I would be outraged but meat is meat. If youre uncomfortable with it, go vegetarian

RebelRogue · 06/08/2018 17:00

@SavvySaver24 why isn't a pig or a chicken just as worthy?

Isitwinteryet · 06/08/2018 17:02

As a few people have said, it makes no different for me what animal it is. I don't agree with killing it. :(

UpstartCrow · 06/08/2018 17:08

I was skeptical about this claim, as there is no slaughter method for dogs in the UK. Also, there is no easy way to dispose of the parts that aren't edible. Backyard slaughter creates a lost of waste and smells, and there just haven't been any complaints about people eating dogs in the UK.

From the article;

''In a statement, the RSPCA, said: 'It is illegal to sell dog meat to the public in the UK. There are also no abattoirs that have a licence to kill dogs and it would be against slaughter and animal welfare legislation too. So, while dog meat eating is not specifically banned here these laws mean that there is effectively a ban on the practice.'

'The RSPCA has no evidence that dog meat eating is on the rise in the UK, nor have we ever received any reports on this issue. While we do not believe it happens here, we continue to monitor the situation.' ''

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 06/08/2018 17:32

I would eat any animal if I absoultuely had to.
However I like my meat to taste nice and to be raised and killed in the nicest way possible. So personally I love to eat game especially rabbit because it's wild up to the point it's shot.
I can't see any value in eating a dog. It would taste disgusting I'm sure and I can't see how you can farm them humanely. Pigs are indeed as intelligent but they aren't sociabised in the same way as dogs ( and I say that as someone who had a pet pig growing up).

SavvySaver24 · 06/08/2018 17:34

RebelRogue. To me a dog is a domesticated pet. I grt some people don't see it that way and just see "meat" but then why do you diffetrntiate between human and animal, meat is meat so ig you are prepared to eat any meat you should also have no issue with eating a human, but i am willing to bet you would...

tararabumdeay · 06/08/2018 17:35

Dogs and then horses became more useful to humans than just meat which made them too valuable to eat.

OftenHangry · 06/08/2018 17:38

When it all came out about the horse meat and people were "outraged" its still an animal!!!!!!

It's because it wasn't supposed to be there. Not because it's horse meat. The main issue is people want to be able to make a choice. Some eat horse meat, some don't.

And to anyone saying, it is just meat, no different to cow, pig etc. YOU are meat too. So fo you now agree with eating people!?
If it was legal and well reared for the purpose of eating. Yup. I would taste a human.

RebelRogue · 06/08/2018 17:43

@SavvySaver24 if I really really had to, I'd eat my own leg. But since I don't and I'm like I said a fussy git , I have no interest in any animal on my plate except for chicken and pig.
But that's a matter of taste, not cuddliness. You're establishing a pecking order based on feelings or cuteness factor. (And chickens are stupid)

But tbh I don't view humans as a class(individuals is debatable) as animals, or animals as "part of the family".

RebelRogue · 06/08/2018 17:44

@OftenHangry how appropriate is your username Grin

OftenHangry · 06/08/2018 17:47

Oh my god @RebelRogue 😂 Yeah!

Grumpos · 06/08/2018 17:53

this is completely cultural and how you value different animals depends on where you were brought up.
I’m veggie and have been for a long time, the primary reason was always because I could never differentiate between animals we did eat and animals we didn’t. I just don’t see the difference.
In India eating cow is not the done thing the UK doesnt have an issue with it, in China they eat dog, how is this different?
I mean it’s abhorrent to the majority of ppl in Western culture because of the distinction we have placed on certain animals as pets.
Makes me sad either way as clearly I don’t eat any but you cannot simply determine YOUR culture as the morally superior one.

GunpowderGelatine · 06/08/2018 17:57

I don't have time for people who'll be outraged by one animal being chopped up and cooked whilst blindly tucking into another over tea

OftenHangry · 06/08/2018 17:59

I’m veggie and have been for a long time, the primary reason was always because I could never differentiate between animals we did eat and animals we didn’t.

I can't too. I am open to eating any so it's fair on them all.

SavvySaver24 · 06/08/2018 18:00

if I really really had to, I'd eat my own leg.

Yes but we aren't talking if you really really had to. I'm saying that to me there is no difference whatsoever between eating a dog and a human. To me, both are important parts of the family. So if you think it is Ok for dog to br whacked on the supermarket shelf on the meat aisle, then thr same principle applies to humans. It is afterall just meat!

ImAIdoot · 06/08/2018 18:01

I find eating dogs offensive. It is not our culture to do this, dogs have been our friends and companions in the UK for thousands of years, since before the Romans or the English turned up, it's almost like eating a person.

I certainly can't call it logical to eat pigs but not dogs, but people eating dogs can still fuck right off away from me to do it. Grin

mydogisthebest · 06/08/2018 18:15

I think it is horrible but then I am vegetarian. It upsets me that any animal is killed so that we can eat meat but particularly pigs. I love pigs and know a few people that have them as pets.

They are actually very clean animals, very friendly and very intelligent.

crazycatgal · 06/08/2018 18:38

@OftenHangry You would seriously eat another human as long as they were well reared and killed humanely? Hmm

rainingcatsanddog · 06/08/2018 18:51

I've with the meat is meat posters.

I wouldn't knowingly choose to eat dog meat unless I was desperate as it's part of my cultural brainwashing that it's a barbaric thing to eat.

Many cultures would find us strange for eating rabbit and pigeon.

OftenHangry · 06/08/2018 18:53

@crazycatgal curious taste buds. I don't discriminate. If it's well cared for and reared particularly for eating, I will eat it 😂
Cannibalism is pretty much present in our world even in modern times. Though it is obviously something of a taboo.
