Like brain surgery or astrophysics. You know the kind of thing that's easier than the absolute slog of princessing.

Isn't Zara Tindall in Australia?

EdithWeston · 05/08/2018 08:12

"Doesn’t one of them just spend her life on holiday? Skiing or sunbathing."

No neither. But from the way the press report on that, rather than their charitable or paid work, you could easily form the wrong impression. And of course, the rich do take several holidays a year and can afford expensive destinations. Just look at the various MN threads which show how wildly holiday budgets vary!

ourkidmolly · 05/08/2018 08:12

That Nelson quote is so cringey. God almighty what the fuck? Don't they have a plethora of advisers to check naff shite like that?

FlatPackFurnitureCompAnyone · 05/08/2018 08:14

The thing is that most of their friends would have equally privileged lifestyles with no press intrusion whatsoever. And those are their peers so that’s their basis for comparison.

Obviously they are unbelievably privileged but I can say hand on heart that I wouldn’t swap. Not with all the extra stuff that comes with it. That would break me.

I’d swap with one of their friends in a heartbeat though most probably!

But no, a bit more privilege would be nice but really I’m doing fine. I’ve got food, shelter, warmth, good health and healthy kids. I would not want all the press and social media shit, no way.

ourkidmolly · 05/08/2018 08:15

All they need to do is shut up, keep a low profile and enjoy their huge trust funds. Seems impossible for them and their parents. I mean HRH? So outdated and unnecessary. Let it go. Your nan happens to be the Queen end of.

Tinycitrus · 05/08/2018 08:15

and perhaps report more on the work of their charities

Lol

Why should this be a news story. Plenty of people make huge sacrifices in their personal lives to help others every day. Doctors, nurses, police officers, community workers, social workers, teachers..

Why goes the charity work of s couple if privileged slowness merit a news story?

Pluckedpencil · 05/08/2018 08:15

Thing is, there are lots of little rich girls with money like theirs who don't have to think about this social media circus. There are media engines (weapons) now that basically stalk and publicly report and analyse every aspect of their lives. It's the Midas touch, everything you you touch turns into social media fodder. I would 1000 times prefer to be poor but anonymous. I can always make money, but I can't buy anonymity and privacy.

Antigonads · 05/08/2018 08:15

No Zara is not in Australia. She's recently had a baby and was last photographed at Gatcombe Horse Trials.

coolncalm · 05/08/2018 08:16

Why feel sorry for them having "no clear roles", they get the best of both worlds surely. Their wealth and privilege could be put to good use, if they have a need of a "role", a "worthwhile" role doing humanitarian work might be something they could try. If not i suppose they could do as other young women less privileged than they are, and just go out to work. (well they do but on their own terms to fit in with holidays) Most people don't have roles, they just struggle to get by.

Im sure they aren't suffering for not having "a role", seems to suit their lazy holiday loving lifestyle.

JuneFromBethesda · 05/08/2018 08:17

longwayoff I was agreeing with you. I was making the point that Zara T manages to cope with the burden of being a modern princess (in all but name) without feeling the need to complain publicly about the downsides.

And really, they are so far down the rung of sovereignty there would have to be an almighty attack on the royal family for them to get within sniffing distance of the monarchy, so in real terms they’re at pretty much the same level as ZT.

DroningOn · 05/08/2018 08:17

I like the core of the Royal family - all the freeloading clinger oners can fuck off and get real jobs as far as I'm concerned

FlatPackFurnitureCompAnyone · 05/08/2018 08:20

Exactly. Some of them even court it!

'Charity work' seems to consist of hand shaking for the royals. Voluntary work for people i know includes befriending elderly isolated people over a period of many years and volunteering at homless shelters cooking, cleaning, providing benefits advice etc, cant see a comparison.

RoseAndRose · 05/08/2018 08:22

"doing humanitarian work might be something they could try"

Why 'wouid try' rather than 'are already doing and probably wish heartily that it got a few column inches rather than all the nastiness about appearance and general inaccuracy'

Info on their charity work is readily available, but you do tend to have to look for yourself as it's so rarely reported.

coolncalm · 05/08/2018 08:24

That can all change in a heartbeat, most people are a couple of paychecks away from homelessness. That's the difference. As regards the media and press intrusion, they don't get that much, they seem to love it anyway. Just as celebrities do. The great thing for them is, they get to feel like celebrities, even though they have no talents.

FolderReformedScruncher · 05/08/2018 08:29

There is something other worldly about the two girls and the parents. It's hard to describe but if one of them actually had a job it would be something. Where do they get their money from? I always feel mocked when I see the face of any of these four people and I can't quite explain why. Their very existence seems against nature somehow is the only way I can describe it.

FlatPackFurnitureCompAnyone · 05/08/2018 08:31

Absolutely. But it’s no different for princesses - ok not the couple of paychecks thing, but we are all subject to the whims of fate. Just look at their aunt for a recent example. Also Princess Grace, and Queen Astrid of Belgium (a Swedish princess by birth). The Greek royal family.... nothing is certain, all we really have is the here and now.

EdithWeston · 05/08/2018 08:31

The royals do pretty much exactly what the charities ask them to. So something that brings attention and therefore donations is definitely worth it. It's immensely valuable to charities to have Patrons, especially those who attract rich donors.

Charities more or less compete to Royals as patrons. It is that valuable in itself, just as it is. So that is the humanitarian work hey can do, whic very few people could do as effectively. But somehow they shouldn't be doing what the charities seriously want and see best benefit from because it's not physical work?? And then of course because they stick with the roles the charities are seriously keen to have them do, criticised publicly for that two, that it's not 'real' enough.

Yeah, I can see why they see the bad side of pressure form he public - they'll be damned whatever they do. I mean, some of this latest round is edging extremely close to damning them because they like their parents.

coolncalm · 05/08/2018 08:31

Info on their charity work is readily available, but you do tend to have to look for yourself as it's so rarely reported.
Charity work by the royals mainly consists of them putting their name to something, They don't put themselves out or give huge chunks of their money. Why on earth should it be reported, it's not news. The royal family receive millions of taxpayers money....giving their name to different charities is something they have to be seen to do. They have to do something. Let's not pretend it causes them any hardship, or worthy of any fanfares.

coolncalm · 05/08/2018 08:34

they'll be damned whatever they do
That's because of the gross injustice of having a "royal family"

EdithWeston · 05/08/2018 08:35

"but if one of them actually had a job it would be something"

Beatrice works for tech firm Affiniti, Eugenie for art gallery Hauser & Wirth.

Their mother has worked for various companies over the years too.

So perhaps the question should be, 'why does the media foster coverage and commentary that omits even readily Google-able facts?'

FlatPackFurnitureCompAnyone · 05/08/2018 08:36

coolncalm I agree, it’s ridiculous to have a royal family in the first place. All the same, I would not want to swap with them.

EdithWeston · 05/08/2018 08:39

Charity work by the royals mainly consists of them putting their name to something

Agree, and as posted above that's something the charities fund immensely valuable

They don't put themselves out or give huge chunks of their money

Their personal donations are usually kept strictly private.

Why on earth should it be reported, it's not news

I don't think it should be reported routinely but do think that - when there are comments that they 'could try' something they are already doing - it's worth pointing out the mismatch between the trope and the RL actions.

Hellywelly10 · 05/08/2018 08:40

Their 'charity work' consists of photo ops lets face it.

Notagainmun · 05/08/2018 08:40

I love the totals but I think that unless you are directly in line to the throne, or a sibling to a person directly in line to the throne, then you should be in work, using your privileged education. Nieces, nephews, cousins etc should not be regard as totals as such.
