Like brain surgery or astrophysics. You know the kind of thing that's easier than the absolute slog of princessing.

I'm not a fan but I don't think they actually do receive any public money, at least not directly. Not challenging any other criticism of them on his thread but 'we' don't pay for their lifestyles.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/08/2018 07:38

I feel sorry for them. I agree with bleary. I don’t have much of an opinion on them tbh. The haven’t endeared themselves with their odd choice of clothes, seem a bit gauche and rather like they’ve jumped out of a Jane Austin novel. However the do charity work. They’re not just sunning themselves daily.

LaDaronne · 05/08/2018 07:39

Meh. They can always give up their royal status if it bothers them that much.

Donthugmeimscared · 05/08/2018 07:39

They can swap with me. I have 25p in my bank until Wednesday and hoping the bread doesn't run out before then. They get to work in my badly paid job too. I'm not a fan of drinking or clubbing so don't mind missing that either. Plus I don't think my children would mind the life style change either.

Antigonads · 05/08/2018 07:42

They do seem to rather court publicity though. Unlike Zara and Peter.

RoadToRivendell · 05/08/2018 07:42

Has anyone seen The Windsors on 4OD? Good grief, those poor princesses do not get off lightly. Please go watch it. Hilarious.

They seem to be less media-savvy than other royals.

YodelOdel · 05/08/2018 07:44

Beatrice and Eugenie are constantly ridiculed over their appearance. That must be hard. Charles' line are exempted and protected from media attack, but Fergie and her family are not.

The fact the British media chose to call their mother "Fergie" rather than Sarah (compared to how they called Diana by her first name) shows how the press have viewed them.

I wouldn't want my every move documented and photographed and put online for everyone to see and tear apart. Even this thread is testament to the fact everyone has an opinion on you. Usually negative.

kmc1111 · 05/08/2018 07:46

Beatrice and Eugenie are higher up the line of succession than Zara though, close enough right now that an unexpected death or two would change their circumstances a lot. Zara not so much, barring total disaster she’s irrelevant.

I’m not exactly weeping for them, but they are in a weird position. They’re high enough up the chain that people expect a lot from them and feel entitled to an opinion on how they live their lives, but because of Charles streamlined monarchy plan they have no clear roles and a lot less protection than their cousins. It’s an awkward, very modern spot to navigate. Being royal enough that your life has to be built around that, but not royal enough to get, well, the full royal treatment.

brizzledrizzle · 05/08/2018 07:47

Not for them the fear of homelessness, foodbanks and sheer poverty that so many have to face in Britain. We don't want to hear about any hardship tales from the privileged ones.

This. They need to walk a mile in the shoes of people who really know what it is like to struggle. Several years on minimum wage with ill health, mental health problems, facing eviction and so on should do it. I wouldn't wish that on anybody though.

What they have said is very offensive.

coolncalm · 05/08/2018 07:50

If i don't like my job i can get another
These days that isn't an easy thing to do, but being a princess isn't a job, they also have their "jobs" which they can flit in and out of whenever they want, wuthout the fear of JSA, sanctions and food banks looming over them. As for saying and doing stupid things, they can and do, think Prince Andrew. Also they have huge choice in what they wear.......and they absolutely love their privileged lives. I wish people would stop thinking the royal family get a raw deal. Eugenie and Beatrice get less press attention than the average celebrity, (but they don't have to work for it) they'have a life of extreme privilege, there aren't many drawbacks.

Antigonads · 05/08/2018 07:51

That would be 6 unexpected deaths.

longwayoff · 05/08/2018 07:56

Well yes June, there are a couple of handfuls of minor royals about whom we hear nothing. Good luck to them, they have the lives they want, do what they like and don't seek publicity whilst telling us how difficult things can be. I fail to see why either of these women are of interest generally and whatever their 'public duties' may be I'd be surprised if we couldn't get by without them.

I’m not sure Nelson Mandela meant that to mean you should hold a massive fuck off wedding and invite all your wealthy chums. Wink

They are just a product of their upbringing. They can’t help it.

Sounds ideal, they get the best of both worlds. The luxury of never having money worries, unlimited holidays etc, but no high expectations of them either. In other words they can live the life of Riley. As for lesser protection than their cousins....if their father has any concerns he can dig deep into his pockets and pay for it himself. Not as if he had to earn it anyway.

MadamBatty · 05/08/2018 07:57

My local Aldi is recruiting

JaneJeffer · 05/08/2018 07:59

but where will they hang their hats while they operate? Grin

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/08/2018 08:02

I think they’re quite a long way from an unexpected death or two changing their life. I’m not sure they’ve ever had to worry that’s going to be an issue.

BlueBug45 · 05/08/2018 08:03

@kmc1111 it would have to be a big disaster before they get anywhere near the throne thanks to their cousins from Prince Charles being and getting married, and having children.

Plus even if the current load of Royal Family were wiped out there are European royals we could import many of whom live normal quiet lives. So there was no need, like Anne and Edward's children, for them to be given royal titles.

Allegorical · 05/08/2018 08:03

I feel sorry for them a bit. No clear roles the are ridiculed for not having model looks in a way that the perfectly ordinary looking males of the royal family are not.
What exactly are they supposed to do. Would they even be allowed to do most proffesional type
Jobs if they wanted to?

PutYourShirtOnMartin · 05/08/2018 08:06

@twoheaped I thought that ! She said they were very pleased.....!!!

Cherubfish · 05/08/2018 08:08

I'd far rather be a brain surgeon or an astrophysicist than a princess.

Petalflowers · 05/08/2018 08:08

They do make some valid points though. I don’t think they would deny 5hat other people’s lives are easier, just that it’s not always a bed of roses being a princess.

I wondered who that grandmother quote was referring to also. Couldn’t see anything in the press after a quick google.

Tinycitrus · 05/08/2018 08:09

Doesn’t one of them just spend her life on holiday? Skiing or sunbathing.

EdithWeston · 05/08/2018 08:09

Riches/privilege don't bring happiness. Who'd have thunk it?

Being on the receiving end of published bitchy comments about both work life and private life isn't fun either. Also not a surprise.

Do MNers really not see that money doesn't solve everything, and that life in the public eye is stressful. And that doesn't mean that other lives aren't just as stressful. Or that happiness or stoicism, or good mental health, are only available to certain economic or social classes. Or that those pressures are the same life long.

When the press stop commenting on their clothes all the time, and perhaps report more on the work of their charities, they might find it easier to juggle Royal/charitable activities, their actual jobs/studies and a private life.
