To serve these foods to muslim friends

Hi - posting here for traffic but also because I don't want to BU. I invited some new school friends and their parents for a bbq in a couple of weeks and two of the families are muslim and mentioned they only eat halal.
I want to make an effort to make them feel comfortable, and it has also been very interesting learning all about what is halal or haram. Obviously no pork will be served. However, some of the guidance on the internet is not clear, so I wondered if anyone with this diet could help me with these items and whether it would BU to serve them up:

Vinegar - if I served this in eg. a coleslaw, are all types of vinegar fine? (Eg is the vinegar not seen as alcohol anymore?)
Butter - Am I overthinking this? Would you eat butter?
Alcohol - I know you wouldn't drink this, but is it acceptable for others in the group to be drinking a glass of wine?
Halloumi - I can't figure out if this is okay or not.

Also - any tips you might have would be great, especially if there are brands of crisps, bread, butter etc....you might use.

Thank you!

From internet search:
The act of slaughtering itself is preceded by mentioning the name of God. Invoking the name of God at the moment of slaughtering is sometimes interpreted as acknowledgment of God's right over all things and thanking God for the sustenance he provides: it is a sign the food is taken not in sin or in gluttony, but to survive and praise Allah, as the most common blessing is, *"Bismillah," or "In the name of God".

All this islamaphobia over stating bismillah, which translated means in the name of God.

Also Muslims I know only go to their own muslim butchers and never purchase meat from supermarkets and would rather eat vegetarian food than create unease or awkwardness when eating out with non-muslims. They stick to soft drinks and never object to others having an alcoholic drink with their food.

From what I understand from dh, Muslims can't pray in a place where dogs go. That's one of the reasons we won't let the dogs upstairs. I know lots of Muslims who have dogs as pets. I would say out of dh's friendship group, 3/4 have dogs. I hate people who can't tolerate pets.

The Muslims I know all eat supermarket meat, don't worry about halal and during alcohol. :D

Oh, and one looks after my dog when I go on holiday.

Ziggzagg · 05/08/2018 22:05

Oh for Gods sake... we have a big German Shepherd and there's loads of Muslims in this house!!

MissEliza · 05/08/2018 22:06

Regarding food Op, I've always been proactive and brought things for my family to eat at BBQs. Now I find friends now go and automatically buy things for us as they've learned what the dcs can eat! I find Asda has a good range of marinated halal meat and halal hot dogs.

KennDodd · 05/08/2018 22:10

Just a little question about dogs and Muslims. Can you get halal dog food? I used to have a strict Jewish friend, she wouldn't have non kosher stuff in the house, no dog but I do wonder now what she feed her cat.

lazyhazysummer · 05/08/2018 22:21

Where we walk our dog, (seaside promenade) the majority of muslims are scared of the dog, usually pull their kids back. I don't know whether they consider them unclean but they're certainly passing their fears on to their kids.

BertrandRussell · 05/08/2018 22:23

The man who services our boiler is frightened of dogs so ours go to visit our neighbours while he works. Because we're not arsehomes.

Savvy- you are a racist. Sue me.

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 22:24

Savvy no shutting dogs away because you hate the idea but “pandering to minorities” is unacceptable?

Just so we’re clear. You’re placing the needs of a dog over those of a human.

badteacher · 05/08/2018 22:34

I find myself applauding Bertrand 👏

lazyhazysummer · 05/08/2018 22:37

From my experience muslims definitely don't like dogs. This summer large stretches of the seaside promenade and beaches in my hometown were full of muslim visitors. A large majority of them back away when they see a dog. It doesn't bother me, it was just something i observed. I didn't see any of them with a dog themselves.

MissEliza · 05/08/2018 23:31

If you've encountered Muslims who don't like dogs, their dislike/fear has cultural not religious origins.

lazyhazysummer · 05/08/2018 23:37

I didn't have opinions either way the reasons why, whether cultural or religious.

MissEliza · 06/08/2018 00:03

You don't need to google. I've just told you.

lazyhazysummer · 06/08/2018 00:24

You didn't tell me the reasons, i thought you sounded a bit disbelieving.

rainbowsandsmiles · 06/08/2018 00:34

I'm agreeing with Bertrand's viewpoint on this thread too. I find this a new concept for me as I'm usually in disagreement lol

manicinsomniac · 06/08/2018 03:29

It can't be racist to object to something on religious grounds, can it? Islam is a religion; its adherents are found within all races. It could be prejudicial (I'm guessing religionist isn't a word!).

I don't think objecting to Halal meat on the grounds of the prayer is necessary prejudiced against Muslims, even for atheists. I'm a practising Christian and have found that many atheists have a really strong negative reaction to any mention of prayer, even if they genuinely believe it's total nonsense. I've sometimes asked if somebody mind if I pray for a particular situation or person and have been told categorically no; don't pray for me, around me or about me kind of reaction. Very strong and like they're repulsed by it. It certainly doesn't come across as something they see as just random words that are immaterial, though I'm sure it is to the majority of atheists.

I agree that everybody should have the right to eat no, some or all meat by any criteria that they see fit. But, if it's a mainstream criterion, such as halal/non halal, then I really don't understand why all shops and restaurants aren't required to state in store, on packaging or on menus whether their meat is Halal or not. It would make it better for everybody who cares either way, surely. People are saying that nobody is forcing anybody to eat anything but by having no (easy, instant) way of knowing then they sort of are. And by not telling guests what kind of meat you're serving they sort of are too.

Not liking dogs and not wanting to be touched by a dog because of the implications it has on your next prayer are two very different things.

crayoladreamz · 06/08/2018 07:28

Not all halal meat is stunned first.

Many animals are slaughtered without stunning. Their necks are slashed and the artery severed. Blood drains from the body as the animal writhes in pain and gasps for every last breath.

It is utterly barbaric. I’m aware that some are stunned first but whilst so many still are not I would never knowingly eat halal meat.

YeTalkShiteHen · 06/08/2018 09:20

crayoladreamz and look up what happens to non halal meat, funny nobody mentions the animals that bypass the stunning system, the graphic times and ways they die, why not?

Oh because it doesn’t suit their agenda of anti halal and they don’t want to think about it.

Halal is cruel, and non halal meat is killed off to sleep in a lovely slaughterhouse where they’re kind and lovely and they know nothing about what’s happening seems to be the overriding insinuation from many of the anti halal brigade.

How fucking ridiculous.

YeTalkShiteHen · 06/08/2018 09:20

Lulled not killed!

BertrandRussell · 06/08/2018 09:22

If you want to buy unstunned halal meat you have to go to specialtist butchers.

petrolpump28 · 06/08/2018 09:24

I hate people who can't tolerate pets I hate picking cat shit up and finding blobs of dog shit when I go for a walk.

starcrossedseahorse · 06/08/2018 09:26

As I have stated before, you are wrong about this and several supermarkets sell meat from unstunned animals.
