AIBU for forcing this woman to wear a seatbelt?

I was on a 14 seater minibus today on the way to the ski fields. We drove along one of Australia’s most dangerous, icy alpine roads. Before driving, the driver asked if everyone had a seatbelt on - most people said yes, but the driver didn’t get out and check each person’s seatbelt.

We got to a snow chain checkpoint, and I noticed that two women in their 20s or 30s weren’t wearing seatbelts.
This is in Australia, it’s illegal not to wear a seatbelt - though only the driver (not the passengers without seatbelts) would have been fined $564 or £321 and given 6 demerit points. Apart from that wearing a seatbelt is obviously important for safety.

I said to the women in a friendly tone “sorry but you’ve forgotten to put your seatbelt on!”. The response was “um no I’m fine”. I said that the driver could be fined if passengers weren’t wearing seatbelts, she said “okay” really slowly. I then added “it’s also really dangerous”...and this time she just looked away and didn’t say anything, I then heard the women speaking with each other about it. I let it go, and decided to bring it up to the driver when we arrived - it wasn’t possible to speak to him without shouting from where I was sitting at the back of the bus.

The bus pulled over again for a random breath test, again I asked the women to please put their belts on, much more assertively than before and loudly enough that the driver could hear. The driver heard me and checked that everyone was wearing belts, probably because there were coppas a metre away for the breath checks. Once we passed the checkpoint though one of the women took her belt off again! I was genuinely shocked and just said “seriously” in what I admit was a rude manner. So AIBU for asking an adult to wear a seatbelt?!

So AIBU for insisting a grown woman wear a seatbelt? And should I bother saying anything on the return journey? The driver can’t see the entire bus properly and his eyes need to be on the road!

@StringandGlitter

I'm slim, senior management and happily married for 35 years next week, so no. I don't feel the need to tell tales on adults on buses.

I imagine the OP's opening line was, "ummmmmmmmmm, I'm dobbing on you" and put her hand up until the driver noticed.

KatharinaRosalie · 04/08/2018 09:47

If there was an accident the person sitting in front of them would have the full impact of their unseatbelted bodies slamming into them - exactly. I don't care what you do with your own life, but you sure will be wearing a belt if you're sitting in my car.

Pengggwn · 04/08/2018 09:48

KatharinaRosalie

Of course, but that's your car, isn't it? This woman doesn't own the car.

Loore · 04/08/2018 09:51

Not sure where you are getting your info from but in NSW buses that seat more than 12 including the driver are exempt from the seat belt laws, so the driver actually won't be fined as you say, and they don't have to wear their seat belts.

hairylegsonshow · 04/08/2018 09:59

I love that Littefearofhumans doesn't challenge people for doing stuff that puts other people at risk of harm, because she is slim and happily married :D

Catastic · 04/08/2018 09:59

Not sure if that's true Loore but there are other places to ski in Oz than NSW. Did the OP say she was in NSW?

HarryPotterISreal · 04/08/2018 09:59

I didn’t know Australia had skiing. I thought you were trying to say Austria. Misses the point.

Cleebope2 · 04/08/2018 10:01

Actually you can ski in Australia

CrochetBelle · 04/08/2018 10:01

I'd have loudly told her to stop being a dick.

Winebottle · 04/08/2018 10:04

Stay out of it. They could have put it on in time if there was a police seat belt inspection.

DingDongDenny · 04/08/2018 10:06

Good for you for speaking up. As I've got older I care a lot less about what people think and I've picked people up on stupid stuff like this before. Like the woman on the plane last week texting during take-off that I had to tell 3 times to stop (Yes I can see you hiding your phone under a magazine - dick!)

Clairetree1 · 04/08/2018 10:09

YANBU - how utterly selfish, in a crash she becomes an unrestrained object, and could well crush somebody else to death

drspouse · 04/08/2018 10:10

YANBU at all. I stood so a car couldn't leave the nursery car park recently because the driver and passenger ignored me when I told them it was illegal and unsafe to give a child and parent a lift without a car seat for the child. I told them what I was doing.
The extra parent got out with their child.

Aridane · 04/08/2018 10:11

Agree with Pengwwwyn on this

drspouse · 04/08/2018 10:12

winebottle Yes because that's EXACTLY why there are seat belt laws, to give police extra work.

Sweetheart1313 · 04/08/2018 10:18

@drspouse how old was the child? If aged 3 or over it's legal for short, unexpected journeys to use a normal seatbelt

KatharinaRosalie · 04/08/2018 10:19

Of course, but that's your car, isn't it?

Let me re-phrase it - if you're sitting close enough to me to be dangerous in case of an accident, I will also complain to the driver that you're not wearing the seat belt.

Loore · 04/08/2018 10:20

Not sure if that's true Loore but there are other places to ski in Oz than NSW. Did the OP say she was in NSW?

Have a read of the NSW Road Rules and laws if you really want, can read the Vic ones as well if you like (the only other state with ski fields and the same rules re seat belts).

If it were really an issue, the driver would be making more of an issue out of it. It's not the OPs responsibility, it's the drivers. He's the one in control of the vehicle, its the vehicle's CTP insurer that will be be liable if there's injuries caused by accidents.

Think one of the non seatbelt wearers has found the threadgrin

If you are referring to me, sorry to disappoint, in Australia, but much more far north than were the OP is.

Pengggwn · 04/08/2018 10:21

KatharinaRosalie

I don't disagree that it was reasonable for her to tell the driver.

SuitedandBooted · 04/08/2018 10:23

Love the way several posters happily ignore the point that someone who is NOT wearing a seatbelt is basically a 100lb+ flying object if the vehicle crashes.

Watch the video from a PP above!!!

But hey, personal choice rules, everyone. Hmm.

furandchandeliers · 04/08/2018 10:25

I'm going against the grain here and saying yabu!

Mind your own business!

If the driver can't be bothered to check everyone is wearing belts then it's his fault if he gets fined.

If there's a crash and the seatbelt-less woman is injured then it's her own fault.

I would wear my belt, but if for some reason I didn't want to and some idiot kept on at me like a bloody parrot I'd have told you to fuck off. Ms Parker Smile

TwinkulTwinkle · 04/08/2018 10:25

littlefearofhumans - r u sitting two rows ahead of CGaus? Grin

Scary name choice btw - you must be really foolish brave and powerful in real life.

G5000 · 04/08/2018 10:27

If there's a crash and the seatbelt-less woman is injured then it's her own fault.

And what about the other people she will injure or kill?
