Aibu to ask what alcohol you keep at home?

Just curious. DH and I only ever drink wine or beer and that (or soft drinks) is what we offer guests. We buy only what we are likely to drink in a week. Maybe buy a couple of bottles of gin or vodka to enjoy over christmas holidays. Talking to colleagues though, it seems most of them maintain a fully-stocked "home bar" with a range of spirits, liquers etc available all year round. So I am wondering, are we the norm or are they? Do most people expect to be offered a wide selection of alcoholic drinks if they visit you?

A bottle of rum, two bottles of gin, dh's whisky, 18 red wine, 16 white wine, a few bottles of champagne (birthday/christmas gifts from people) and a couple of bottles of prosseco.

We only drink at weekends, but we use Naked Wines and buy 12 bottles a month, so we always have a surplus knocking round.

ForalltheSaints · 03/08/2018 20:11

None at all. Removed when I had an alcoholic relative and we have never gone back.

Pubs are nearby for when drinking.

Oblomov18 · 03/08/2018 20:12

Quite a few things:
Wines - red, white and rose.
Prosecco for visitors
Lager
Cider
Gin

SmileAndNod · 03/08/2018 20:15

Wine, champagne, prosecco in the fridge at all times, cider for dh and a variety of gins for me. In the summer I have sipsmith summer cup on the go and maybe a bottle of port and baileys at Xmas.
I think I drink too much Shock

SellFridges · 03/08/2018 20:18

We have about 12 bottles of wine (white/fizz/red) and usually a 12 pack of beer. Don’t have so many spirits but do have six or seven different gins, a bottle of brandy, some aperol and some Ameretto. Oh and a couple of bottles of port.

INeedMoreCakeInMyLife · 03/08/2018 20:21

4 beers max.. As they would go out of date if brought a big case. I don't drink and dp. May have one every once in a while but that's it.

Maybugger · 03/08/2018 20:27

A pretty random selection here, neither of us drinks really:
Sloe gin, gin, white/red/rosé wine, a half full bottle of rum (no idea where that came from!), Russian vodka (unopened, ditto), Amaretto and Absinthe (absolutely no idea what that's for!).

margotsdevil · 03/08/2018 20:28

We really don't drink that much but we do seem to have an excellent selection:

About 20 bottles of wine - mostly red but a few white.
5 bottles of champagne and about 10 bottles of other assorted fizz (prosecco, cava etc)
About 20 bottles of different gins (I'm fussy Blush)
Another 12 or so of malt whisky
A variety of other spirits including Jack Daniels, vodka, brandy, Cointreau, Grand Marnier and rum.

Maybe I need to have a party Wink

Echobelly · 03/08/2018 20:31

Sometimes we have none. Tonight DH and I have had a bottle of beer each and we have some wine in the fridge. We have a tiny bit of Pimms left in the cupboard, and that's it.

Unless we're having a party or people over, we tend only to buy as much as we're going to drink in an evening at a time (2 beers, or one wine) and there isn't more than that around, aside from maybe one longer-term thing like a whisky, Pimms, vodka or port

tor8181 · 03/08/2018 20:32

none,im teetotal and always have been(im nearly 38) oh drinks once a year if he lucky

im very anti drinking(and smoking and drugs) and wont have it in the house

i feel that strongly i wont even be around people who have had a drink and defo wont put my kids around them(not a religious thing we are actually atheists)

we are 24 hour carers as both boys have multiple disabilities each and both need 24 hour care(home educated)

tbh we couldnt drink if we wanted to as both kids dont sleep and we are up all night

we do go through a lot(and i mean a lot)of milk per day and sprite or 7up

BounceAndJump · 03/08/2018 20:33

None, we just buy wine/beer a couple of times a year when we're going to have it rather than storing it.

TailEndCharlie · 03/08/2018 20:36

Due to far too many apples in our garden, orchard and field I currently need to polish off 400 bottles of cider in my cellar before the apple harvest in October.... to go with the 600 bottles of assorted homebrew and a case of Veuve. In the house I suppose there is a case or two of wine, some beers and cider in the fridge, 4 gins, a half full whisky decanter, 2 more bottles of whisky (DH has just had his birthday) and half a bottle of vodka in the freezer. Then there is some liqueurs and sherry for cooking, vermouth for martinis, a 1974 calvados on the go and I think still 8 bottles of sloe gin coming along nicely. About to stock up for the Autumn so looking at wine offers.... I think I take living remotely too seriously!!

Oh and 3 bottles of prosecco! Yey I just remembered!!

ScreamingValenta · 03/08/2018 20:36

None, usually, other than what I plan to drink in the immediate future. I don't like spirits much, so I'll have either a bottle of wine or a few real ales to drink over the weekend, and replenish the following Friday.

Lynne1Cat · 03/08/2018 20:39

all year round..... the odd bottle of rose wine, a few bottles of craft beers, a few fruit ciders, a bottle of Jack Daniels.

The only time we have anything more than that is at Christmas, when we have all above in larger quantities, plus vodka.

Anyone who visits is driving, so I have a variety of fruit juices and soft drinks.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 03/08/2018 20:39

Usually have a reasonable stock of wine, Champagne and a few bottled beers.

We also have a cabinet of unopened spirits, whisky, brandy etc. as we don't drink spirits but people buy or bring them occasionally. There are a couple of decent bottles of Port, which I have a little of at Christmas. There's also gin and vodka for guests but we never touch the stuff!

JaceLancs · 03/08/2018 20:40

Tequila and Cointreau for margaritas
Gin, vodka, whiskey, brandy, maybe Bacardi
I do keep a wine rack with a variety of red white and sparkling but only opened for visitors or sharing if we have a bbq
I’m more of a spirits drinker and just replace each type as I run out or if I see a good offer

champagneplanet · 03/08/2018 20:42

Wine, beer, some fizz and usually a bottle of gin. Not huge spirit drinkers so don't see the point in keeping it in just in case. We are constantly replenishing our stock of what we do have though Wink

DiegoMadonna · 06/08/2018 00:07

We're not big drinkers so there's nothing permanently here. Every now and then if we feel like having a bottle of wine or a couple of beers, we'll buy them with the weekly supermarket shop. So I guess the most we usually have in the house is a few leftover beers in the fridge if we buy a 6 pack and only drink 2 or 3 of them.

NalderAndCollier · 06/08/2018 00:33

1 bottle of rice wine for cooking. 1/2 bottle of very cheap cooking brandy. 1 bottle of homebrewed beer given to me by a mate.

It's not that we don't drink, it's just that we do ours in the pub. Never have booze to offer guests unless we get it in specially.

nokidshere · 06/08/2018 00:40

We don't have anything in the house. We buy stuff when we want to drink it but it's almost always wine or beer. No spirits.
