Aibu to ask what alcohol you keep at home?

Just curious. DH and I only ever drink wine or beer and that (or soft drinks) is what we offer guests. We buy only what we are likely to drink in a week. Maybe buy a couple of bottles of gin or vodka to enjoy over christmas holidays. Talking to colleagues though, it seems most of them maintain a fully-stocked "home bar" with a range of spirits, liquers etc available all year round. So I am wondering, are we the norm or are they? Do most people expect to be offered a wide selection of alcoholic drinks if they visit you?

We’ve often been given bottles so in cupboard usual port, Madeira, whiskey, gin, brandy and a few liqueurs.
In wine fridge in shed wine and champagnes. A few beers in fridge and a box in shed. Red wine in case in shed.
We don’t drink much during the week but bulk buy from time to time.

Red/white/rose wine - all different types
Spiced rum
Vodka in different flavours
Avocaat (from Christmas)
Gin
Port
Whiskey/Bourbons
Chambord
Disaronno
A few craft ales/ciders from a recent food market/festival

That sounds a lot Blush

Cismyass · 03/08/2018 18:40

None because as with ice cream, chocolate and cocoa pops, if they are there i consume them. If they aren't i don't miss them.

unicornchaser · 03/08/2018 18:41

Just what we drink which is wine, beer & a variety of gin.
People tend to bring what they like when they visit and 99% of the time if it's beers or spirits they leave it here for the next time they come and we would do the same when we visit friends.

If it's an unexpected drink then I would just offer whatever I have in Smile

About a dozen bottles of champagne, and half a dozen cava/prosecco, half a dozen bottles of different gins, and the same of single malt whiskeys, two brandy, one rum, a couple of vermouth, a Tio Pepe, lots of red and white wine, two Pimms, Amaretto, chambord, some French liqueurs, a dozen Pineau des Charentes, Aperol, a pistachio liqueur, lots of beer, 3 bottles of homemade sloe gin.

We hardly drink. I like gin, DH has an occasional beer. We very occasionally have a bottle of wine open. We just hoard alcohol from holidays and gifts.

LuluJakey1 · 03/08/2018 18:45

Port.

ShatnersBassoon · 03/08/2018 18:51

Most spirits, beers, wines, various liqueurs...

We're not big drinkers but I don't mind having lots of booze in the house for visitors, or if I just fancy something different. My parents always had a fully stocked home bar, and I think it's passed on to me.

PencilTroll · 03/08/2018 18:51

Nothing, we would just drink it all.

xJune88 · 03/08/2018 18:52

Whatever I'm drinking, that's all 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

DuchessofManchester · 03/08/2018 18:54

Wine and beers with a bottle of gin (for me) and Jack Daniels (for dh)

weegiemum · 03/08/2018 18:54

We don't keep any, drink only wine or beer and buy it as we want it. I've struggled to drink responsibly in the past and it's best just not to have the temptation. We never have spirits in the house.

Tigerpaws57 · 03/08/2018 18:57

It seems like the people with the most wide-ranging stocks are generally the lightest drinkers!

A few cans of beer, one or two little bottles of cider, a bottle of gin that we've had ages, an ancient bottle of brandy which gets dragged out once a year to douse the christmas cake, and I think at the moment we have a random collection of evil-looking alcopops left over from a certain young person's party.

Maybe three or four bottles of wine (dh tends to get given wine as a 'thank you' in his job) so sometimes we are inundated, other times we have none.

Brigante9 · 03/08/2018 19:04

Currently one fridge is basically drinks, various beers, lots of lemonade/fizzy drinks. There’s a version of Sprite with lime, mint, cucumber, it’s lush.

The utility room has a range of high end bourbons, the DH likes a choice! I have Zubrowka stacked up and there’s always red wine in the rack.

Aibu to ask what alcohol you keep at home?
KittyVonCatsworth · 03/08/2018 19:09

None. Everything has been drank by DSD, right down to a bottle of ouzo circa 1997. We can’t keep or drink alcohol in the house. We were given wine for Christmas which we hid in the attic but that was found too 😔

vampirethriller · 03/08/2018 19:13

Nothing except some Chinese cooking wine that I put in onion gravy!

Pimmsypimms · 03/08/2018 19:17

Most spirits you could use in a cocktail, but to be fair, we don’t really drink much (could go possibly months without a drink) but then when I do want a drink, I want a proper decent cocktail!! DH drinks spiced rum, but again, a bottle of that could last him 4/5 months.

Happyhippy45 · 03/08/2018 19:20

We don't have a stocked bar. We'd just drink it all instead of going to the shops to buy what we actually like Grin
We have some vodka and an opened bottle of red wine. Wine was only opened because dh wanted another drink and the last bottle of vodka was finished.
We buy in some wine and beer if people are coming over "to start them off" but folks always bring their own anyway...and often something for us. That's the most stocked our "bar" ever gets.

Lovelydovey · 03/08/2018 19:21

Sometimes a few beers or ciders, usually a couple of bottles of wine and the same bottle of Cointreau and amaretto (bought for cooking with) that we’ve had for nearly 10 years.

Ethylred · 03/08/2018 19:41

DH knows there would be a divorce in the family if he failed to ensure an adequate supply of champagne.
And yes, that is the man's job.

MariaMadita · 03/08/2018 19:49

I'm not quite sure... quite a lot, I suppose. Although "a lot" is obviously relative. Some red wine, a few white wines, a little prosecco, beer, some grappa, at least one vodka, a few kinds of whiskey, DH's gins, some limoncello, amaretto, cynar, del capo... Stuff like that.

Idk? Also a bottle of aquavit and some a bit more unusual stuff... (my little brother likes to give "fun alcohol" as gifts.)

I don't drink a lot (and currently not at all).

DH drinks occasionally and many of my relatives do as well (one of the reasons I like to be prepared...) but we're honestly not alcoholics.Wink

MariaMadita · 03/08/2018 19:51

(my little brother likes to give "fun alcohol" as gifts.)

I suppose it's his way of making sure he'll have something to drink when he visits..

Or that's at least what I tend to accuse him of Wink

Penners99 · 03/08/2018 19:51

Gin, bourbon, wine and beer

MariaMadita · 03/08/2018 19:57

To answer the 2nd questions:

Do most people expect to be offered a wide selection of alcoholic drinks if they visit you?

Colleagues and friends don't seem to, no.
Some probably have come to expect it based on previous visits (?)...

My parents, siblings etc certainly have "stocked bars" so I'd feel like the odd one out if we didn't. Wink

mildshock · 03/08/2018 20:06

We have the following:

dark rum
white rum
gin x2
sloe gin
rhubarb and ginger gin
vodka
whiskey
tequila
southern comfort
baileys
various liqueurs
6 bottles of wine

We only have that much because we very rarely drink and people just seem to buy us alcohol every Christmas and birthday. DP works a lot so doesn't want to spend his precious free time hungover, and I'm just not a big drinker. The last time a bottle got a sideways glance was DPs 30th 5 months ago.

We did manage to offload several bottles of spirits/wine on school for raffles and presents for the staff Grin
