Aibu to ask what alcohol you keep at home?

Just curious. DH and I only ever drink wine or beer and that (or soft drinks) is what we offer guests. We buy only what we are likely to drink in a week. Maybe buy a couple of bottles of gin or vodka to enjoy over christmas holidays. Talking to colleagues though, it seems most of them maintain a fully-stocked "home bar" with a range of spirits, liquers etc available all year round. So I am wondering, are we the norm or are they? Do most people expect to be offered a wide selection of alcoholic drinks if they visit you?

Bacardi and Jack Daniels, plus whatever random wine hasn't been drunk since the last batch of clubcard vouchers we had (which is usually when we restock wine in this house). Basically the couple of spirits we tend to actually drink.

HRTpatch · 03/08/2018 15:39

About 40 bottles of wine and 15 bottles of different gins.
And about 6 cases of beer.
We drink on average 2 bottles of wine, 10 beers and 2 or 3 gins a week.

BevBrook · 03/08/2018 15:39

At present we have: half bottle of white wine in fridge, three bottles of whisky (presents), small amount of gin languishing in the bottom of the bottle, half a bottle of Pimms, rank bottle of Baileys which is several years old and really needs to go, port and sherry probably ditto, and half a bottle of cassis. There is also a bottle of tonic and one of lemonade.

Wine and Archers

DestinationReached · 03/08/2018 15:40

At the moment there is one bottle of Stella and two bottles of fruity cider in our fridge. We buy what we are planning to drink, don't 'stock up' as such.

Parker231 · 03/08/2018 15:40

We rarely drink during the week but regularly have friends for Sunday lunch or BBQ’s. We have in wine, prosecco, bottled beer, Pimms, gin, vodka, whiskey and rum. At the moment there are also a few bottles of things like limoncello and aperol and stuff to make cocktails.

abitoflight · 03/08/2018 15:41

Cases of red/white/champagne/prosecco
Most spirits - lots of gins
Some sticky sweet things
Ginger ale/bitter lemon/tonic/coke
Bitter and lager - occ fruity cider (only buy a carton if on offer for DD's)
Lots of port

thecatsthecats · 03/08/2018 15:41

I'm of the fully stocked bar inclination myself. We have:

2-3 vodkas
5-6 gins
3 rums
3 whiskeys
2 amarettos
baileys
various liquers
aperol
bitters
port
ginger wine
weird foreign stuff!

Plus beer, red, white and fizz in the fridge. Usually cider too.

Funnily enough we barely drink, we've just built it up over the years and like being able to mix whatever we fancy. I haven't had a drink at home for about two months because I'm on a diet and only drink out at special occasions.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 03/08/2018 15:41

We've got loads and loads, much of it from a cockatiel party a few years back. DH drinks rum quite often, and I have the occasional G&T, but most of it sits there waiting for visitors. Beer gets used up and replaced, but the rest of it is gathering dust in a cupboard in the garage.

Chwaraeteg · 03/08/2018 15:41

Not enough today.

In all seriousness though, we don't buy alcohol specifically to keep at home, so we just have whatever is left over from camping trips or parties or gifts etc.

At present we have 6 bottles of beer, half a bottle of port, two thirds of a small bottle of gin and a full bottle of Jack Daniels.

ineedwine99 · 03/08/2018 15:42

Red wine and beer, occasionally rose wine or cider. Port and sherry at Christmas

19lottie82 · 03/08/2018 15:42

Usually nothing. My DH doesn’t drink and I’m generally not bothered about drinking in the house. Occasionally I’ll have a beer though. I think there are 2 bottles of Corona in the fridge left over from a 4 pack I bought a few weeks ago.

XiCi · 03/08/2018 15:42

We always have wine and beer in and a couple of gins, currently Liverpool gin and needle gin. I currently also have cider, creme de cassis, campari, vermouth, aperol, tequila, cointreau, champagne and bottles of pineau and Eau de vie de prunes that we picked up in France on holiday

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 03/08/2018 15:42

"Cocktail." Thank you autocorrect!

YeTalkShiteHen · 03/08/2018 15:42

I know it’s an autocorrect but that did conjure up some lovely images Grin

spanishwife · 03/08/2018 15:42

We have about 10 gins (with a variation of garnishes), limoncello in the freezer, about 25 bottles of wine, 5 bottles of cava, dessert wine x2, disaronno, angostura bitters for cocktails

Tigerpaws57 · 03/08/2018 15:44

Wow! Many of you seem to have a very impressive stock! So, those of you that do, would you think it inhospitable if you were only offered red or white wine and a choice of a couple of beers if you went to someone's home for dinner?

shoofly · 03/08/2018 15:44

Always various gin and wine. We have beer at the moment because my cousin is a craft brewer but we're not beer drinkers so it'll probably be in the fridge til it's out of date. In cupboard is whisky, brandy, vodka, campari, aperol, port, peach schnapps, marsala, amaretto, limoncello, etc, etc..... most of which used the odd time to cook with or brought back from somewhere and v rarely looked at

LakieLady · 03/08/2018 15:46

Most things really. We have loads of spirits, because we rarely drink them (except for gin) so: scotch, brandy, rum (white and dark), vodka, Calvados, tequila, Pernod, grappa and Mezcal.

Vermouth (red and white) mostly used in cooking, Aperol (love an Aperol spritz), and fortified wines (Madeira, Marsala, sherry, several kinds of port) also mostly used for cooking (except for the port).

Stickies: Cointreau, Chambord, Kahlua, Poire William, Grand Marnier, Limoncello, Baileys, kirsch, Drambuie, Amaretto, .

Oh, and Pimms, plus wine (red, white and fizz) and beer. I believe there may be a rather old bottle of Rekorderlig lurking at the back of the fridge. And there's home made sloe gin out in the garage.

I realise this makes us sound like pissheads, but if we were pissheads, we'd have drunk it all!

For gin lovers, Tesco have quite a good offer on Tanquerays atm: £25 for a litre. I'm sure it was around £20 a bottle last time I bought a bottle, which was ages ago as the last 2 bottles were gifts.

Rebecca36 · 03/08/2018 15:46

Wine, we have a lot of wine in stock as husband is given cases of it at Christmas. We give some of it away as we're not big drinkers.

I buy cheaper wine and we have a little drink of that sometimes at weekends and use it in cooking.

In cupboard there are spirits, again mainly Christmas presents. They stay there for ages unless I fancy a vodka once in a while or if husband has a cold.

peterpanwendy · 03/08/2018 15:46

We have beer and wine that we use and buy regularly but we also have a range of other things, prosecco, wines that are to offer guests or take with us if we are invited anywhere, we always keep a few for this reason. We do actually also have most spirits, vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, tequila etc that we have bought in the past for parties and things but don't all get used, if guests come over I would offer them whatever they liked and if one ran out I would buy another so that I am 'fully stocked'. I also like to have soda, tonic, lemonade etc stocked up to have with them. I don't have a food store mind 😂 I am 8 months pregnant so haven't been able to enjoy any of this for a long while!

HRTpatch · 03/08/2018 15:47

Forgot about Aperol!
Also a dozen bottles each of champagne and prosecco.

peterpanwendy · 03/08/2018 15:47

@Tigerpaws57 I would not be offended if I went to someone's house and they didn't have loads to offer though! A red or white or a beer is plenty!

GeezAJammyPeece · 03/08/2018 15:48

Like yourself, we tend to buy wine (mostly red, sometimes rosé), beer, or fruity cider as and when we want to drink it.

Drink spirits very occasionally (couple of times a year) so there's usually a bottle or three kicking around the cupboard.

Currently have :
• Chambord (1/2 of large bottle left over from new year cocktails)
• Koko Kanu rum (received a bottle for review purposes about a year ago, an inch or two left in the bottle)
• 2 bottles of champagne (one was given to DD for either her 18th or 21st. She's 23 in a couple of months)
• 1/2 bottle jack Daniels (the honey one) unopened since I received it for mother's Day. OH said he only bought the small one because that was all that would fit in the hand bag I was also gifted. Not sure what he was implying.
• Most of a relatively expensive bottle of whisky (last time I checked it was around the £90 mark) that OH was gifted to celebrate a work anniversary. He hasn't worked at that place for almost a year. So far, I've used a glug for steak sauce and a glug for cranachan oats on boxing Day.
• 5 bottles of wine (red/white/rose) SIL sent us a box of 6 as a thank you gift for a recent favour. We sampled one Wink

Loitering in the fridge
• 3 cans of Smirnoff cider (bought a 10pack a couple of weeks ago)
• can of premixed Jameson's & coke (free via a cashback app a couple of months back, haven't got round to trying it yet.)
• 2 cans Happy Down premixed cocktail (£1 cashback when Tesco were doing them for £1.50, so picked them up after trying them before when they were free via cashback)
•4 bottles of non-alcoholic kopperberg cider (DD doesn't drink alcohol, picked these up for Christmas/new year but hasn't drunk them yet)
• bottle non-alcoholic rose (see above)

bellsbuss · 03/08/2018 15:48
