Aibu to ask what alcohol you keep at home?

Just curious. DH and I only ever drink wine or beer and that (or soft drinks) is what we offer guests. We buy only what we are likely to drink in a week. Maybe buy a couple of bottles of gin or vodka to enjoy over christmas holidays. Talking to colleagues though, it seems most of them maintain a fully-stocked "home bar" with a range of spirits, liquers etc available all year round. So I am wondering, are we the norm or are they? Do most people expect to be offered a wide selection of alcoholic drinks if they visit you?

Isopropyl

BevBrook · 03/08/2018 15:48

I would not think it inhospitable at all to be offered wine or beer in general. At Christmas I think it’s nice to have a range, but I wouldn’t be in a huff if there wasn’t, and in the summer it’s nice to be offered a GandT or a Pimms or something a bit lighter than wine, but again no problem if not.

spidey66 · 03/08/2018 15:49

Not much, just maybe beer or wine if/when we fancy it or some spirits over Christmas. My husband would just drink it if we had it at home.

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/08/2018 15:50

A similar list to thecats and ours have also crept up over the years because I buy it faster than I drink it. At home, I try to only drink at weekends and DP barely drinks in the house at all.

I'm really not one for 'stuff' but instead I buy food and drink that I like the look of, or if I see something on special offer, at the airport, because I've read about it in a newspaper or on here or wherever, I buy it. I also buy more kindle books than I will ever get time to read, but they don't count as they don't take any space up.

I'm trying to use up, not buy, but what we've got will last months at least but I failed the other day because I saw a citrus Hortus gin in Lidl and nearly didn't buy it but then I thought 'what if it's a special and they sell out and it doesn't come back' and then I had to have it.

DoubleNegativePanda · 03/08/2018 15:50

I don't actually drink very frequently, so I am surprised to have just realized how much alcohol is in my home!

A lot of wine (sister is a sommelier)
Three kinds of beer
Port
Tequila
Gin (four kinds...this is my favorite thing)
Vodka
Rum
Bailey's
Rumchata
Bourbon
Brandy

What I need all this for is beyond me. Luckily my teenager finds alcohol disgusting!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 03/08/2018 15:51

I actually just restocked our bar today funnily enough!

We usually have a selection of gin and whisky. Russian husband has his private vodka selection that i don’t touch because vodka sends me nuts.
There’s always a bottle of white in the fridge and 5 or 6 bottles in the rack.
We have a fridge just for beer and cider.
Funnily enough, we don’t actually drink that often but we do have friends over most weekends which is when it all gets drunk (drank?)

GeezAJammyPeece · 03/08/2018 15:51

Definitely would not think it inhospitable!

You are being very hospitable to invite me in the first place Grin

selavy · 03/08/2018 15:51

We keep a pretty stocked bar, to be honest. Neither of us drink that much at home (maybe a couple at the weekend) but we have most spirits (rum, whiskey, gin, vodka), lots of wine, beer, liqueurs etc. I like to have options to offer guests and family when they come over, but I wouldn’t expect this from friends/family if I was in their house.

RafikiIsTheBest · 03/08/2018 15:52

We have a cupboard full, but don't have wine or beer. We don't like it so don't buy it. We have whisky, gin, archers, baileys, vodka and other stuff.

I wouldn't mind if I went to someone's house and they only had wine or beer to offer, I would, however, refuse both and ask for a glass of water. TBH if I go somewhere and plan on drinking alcohol then I bring my own. DP and I aren't big drinkers though.

LakieLady · 03/08/2018 15:52

limoncello in the freezer

Genius (scuttles off to relocate the limoncello).

LoveInTokyo · 03/08/2018 15:54

We have a few different types of whisky, rum, gin, a bottle of vodka, some random stuff like Bailey's, limoncello, amaretto etc, a couple of cases of red wine, and usually a bottle or two of white/rosé/prosecco and a few bottles of beer and tonic water for G&T in the fridge.

I've got 15 bottles of gin, 2 of vodka, spiced rum, whisky, beer and cider. Tend to buy wine as I'm going to drink it.

ILoveMyDressingGown · 03/08/2018 15:57

Ales and beers of different types, some home-brewed and some bought from shops & microbreweries

Brandy (for cooking)

Red and white wines of different types

Different flavours of gin

Whiskey

Amaretto

Captain Morgan's

Cherry brandy liqueur

Toffee flavoured vodka

Port

The thing is, we have all this alcohol and rarely drink it.

Etymology23 · 03/08/2018 15:57

I don’t drink much but like having different things in. I have: different beers, good cider, red wine, white wine, decent fermented in the bottle fizzy, 2x gins, and a decent Sherry. These are all things I would turn to if I have people over or am celebrating. I also have some lovely local fruit wines.

Then bits and bobs collected: creme de cassis, Cointreau, vermouth and probably some other bits. I want to expand the range really!

PrivateDoor · 03/08/2018 15:58

DH always has a few beers at the weekend, so he always keeps a good stock of various types. Occasionally we have a bottle of wine that has been gifted to us but we usually give it away when visiting others. There is a large bottle of smirnoff that I won in a raffle a few years ago. that is about it!

My parents always had a well stocked drinks cabinet. I used to sneak a bit from every bottle and fill a plastic coke bottle to drink on a Saturday night Shock which may explain why I don't drink now Grin

tabulahrasa · 03/08/2018 15:59

“We’ve got loads, not sure why as we don’t drink a great deal!”

Because if you don’t drink a lot, it kind of accumulates...

So we have vodka, a load of single malts, loads of wines, champagne, southern comfort, some liqueurs, brandy, some ciders and alcopops.

Because some of them we drink very rarely and some not at all, they just kind of build up.

Re being offered only wine or beers.... well I don’t drink either of those, so it’s not inhospitable, I mean I wouldn’t be leaving thinking, huh, that’s rude, but I wouldn’t be drinking.

FurryDogMother · 03/08/2018 16:00

We always have a few bottles of Sauvignon Blanc in - it's Dad's daily tipple. Right now we also have a mixed case of good quality reds from Virgin (I get a case twice a year). Then there's my ever-growing cocktail ingredients - stuff like hazelnut liqueur, kirsch, morello liqueur, Cointreau, Chambord, St Germain, Aperol, cassis, Limoncello, Midori and a few others I forget. We've got 2 bottles of vintage Moet (2004 and 2006) plus another couple of NV champagnes, 2 bottles of prosecco, 1 cava. 3 gewurztraminer, 1 pinot gris. There's also some lychee 'wine' I got from Wing Yip and another Chinese wine I've not tried yet. There's some Mexican beer in the fridge and some bottles of fruit cider. Also sherry, vermouth and port. Then there's the 25 + litres of various home made meads and wines...

All I really fancy is a cup of tea! I can go weeks without having an alcoholic drink. The more esoteric ingredients only get used around Christmas, for cocktails. I buy vodka/gin as and when we need it - ie, friends coming round. Gott some Sauternes and a bottle of Pernod coming next week. I just like having the ingredients to hand if I fancy a cocktail!

GeezAJammyPeece · 03/08/2018 16:00

TBH, if we were visiting, would take along a bottle or two anyway (one as a gift, one intended to be added to the soirée sort of thing)
If we didn't drink the traditional wine/beer offerings and knew we would want to drink our 'usual'; would take it with us as wouldn't expect a host to get it in 'just for us'.

Mumshotel · 03/08/2018 16:00

Wine and beer

vandrew4 · 03/08/2018 16:02

husband is well into cocktail making at the moment so we have dozens and dozens of bottles of every alcohol known to mankind

TotHappy · 03/08/2018 16:07

I would I've to have acabinet like this. But dh just drinks it all. He will just drink whatever, till it's gone. Even cooking brandy. So i don't buy it.

0h · 03/08/2018 16:08

None.

We don't drink and I don't like people so don't invite anyone round so no need to have any in for friends. I'm so welcoming and friendly. 😂

daisypond · 03/08/2018 16:08

We usually might have a few (two or three) beers/lagers in the fridge, but no other alcohol. If we're having wine, we'll just go and buy a bottle, but we don't keep any in. No spirits or liqueurs or anything else.

HollowTalk · 03/08/2018 16:08

How long would a bottle of spirits last once it's been opened? Are you supposed to drink it before a certain time?

StylishMummy · 03/08/2018 16:10

We have 70+ bottles of wine, spirits and liqueurs, even though DH and I rarely drink now. But if we do entertain we have everything ready and waiting Grin
